You guys I just had a virtual appointment with a potential new psychiatrist and when she started to misdiagnose me and suggest stupid shit based on less than a half-hour session, I just stopped listening, told her off in arcane academese, and closed my laptop...

...That felt so fucking good... I'm walking on air... I think I've found the cure to all mental illnesses...

davep,

@RedtheBean Same 🤪

Today is my last day at Elastic. I'll take an extended break and focus on rest, family, health, writing, a bit of startup mentoring/investing, and some research - at least for a while.

I'm thankful for my great colleagues and my leadership at Elastic - y'all are stellar, even if I was often grumbly about some technical or architectural issues. ...

davep,

@HalvarFlake If you're not grumbly about technical and architectural stuff you're not architecting right 😁

davep,

@HalvarFlake Look after yourself 🤗

Vaping! Is anyone really in any doubt that inhaling some “sinister e-potion” – containing nicotine, and the stuff that goes in antifreeze, and the chemical they use for embalming fluid – is detrimental to your health? Even worse is that we’re letting our children do it, being affected by terrifying-sounding conditions including “lung injury” and “pulmonary oedema” - (In the Daily Telegraph).

davep,

@countcol
I've been vaping for nearly 10 years and it's definitely nowhere near as bad as smoking.

But, yeah, marketing to the kids is a cunt's trick.

davep,

@vaughnsc @countcol

Propylene Glycol is found in ice cream too, if I remember correctly.

davep,

@countcol @vaughnsc

It's definitely the lesser evil for me anyway 🙏

I've lost 3 stone (42lb/18kg) in 10 months using my revolutionary new diet of not necking prodigious quantities of alcohol.

My metabolic age is the same as it was three years ago

davep,

@simonzerafa I'm also doing a slightly lax version of the 16/8 diet, allowing a certain amount of daily ketosis due to depleting glycogen levels. Avoiding high gycaemic index foods helps too.

I got fired from my last job for asking my customers if they would prefer "smoking" or "non smoking".

Apparently the wokerati are insisting on "Cremation" or " Burial".

I'm thinking about Willpower today! Humans seem to have decent short term willpower, but not particularly good long term willpower, for things they really want. Willpower doesn't seem to be an infinite resource, and is effected by stress, fatigue, and environment.

So what are your thoughts on Willpower? Have you given up something long term that you really loved? What is the hardest thing for you to limit in your life? What is the thing you always seem to cave for?

Just an FYI, this isn't a platform to shame people for bad habits, we all have something we struggle with, we all have different levels of stress, and grew up in different environments. Just for instance, I can smoke a cigar occasionally, enjoy it throughly, but never really crave nicotine, on the other hand, if you were going to tempt me with a loaf of homemade bread, some delicious BBQ, or a well made cocktail, my willpower is much more limited. Human brains and bodies are incredibly complex and no two people are the same.

davep,

@RickiTarr I bought a book literally called "Willpower" and never got past the first chapter.

Avevo lasciato delle castagne appena germogliate in un sacchetto umido e a quanto pare ha funzionato: non solo il germoglio è cresciuto, ma son spuntate anche le radici!

Ne ho piantate un paio in vaso, chissà. 🤞🏻🌱

A few photos in Lerici near La Spezia. I took the wannabe arty ones of the fort and the sunset but my daughter took the splendid one of the two little girls and their friend.

Putting in a sample order via Alibaba for some grow lights.

If it works out, will be putting in a bulk order for local friends and community. We all pitch in an get only what we need. But because we buy in bulk together, we don't have to pay for someone else's middleman profits.

These grow lights go for $10 per unit on Amazon. I'm getting them for $3 per unit wholesale (that's total costs with shipping, credit card fee, tax, etc). I think they're the exact same thing. Like... I'm buying directly from the manufacturer and not through a drop shipper / middleman.

I guess this is how co-ops start.

davep,

@tinker Nice. Do you have a link?

davep,

@tinker Very cool. Possibly a little underpowered, but it's all good 👍

Do they have ones, say, three times more powerful that aren't too expensive?

davep,

@tinker These look about double the power (18W) but without dimming https://x.alibaba.com/Avb1lZ?ck=pdp

davep,

@tinker Double ones and an expedient silver foil parabolic trough above could work great with two buckets.

Trad Wife memes are always like a traditionally attractive skinny blonde woman in a white dress, in a field of flowers, holding hands with their immaculate children. The text always says something like, Why are you working a job, instead of doing your true calling? This is Godly Motherhood!

This how I know these are made by people who have never been around children, or possibly even women, and also never had to worry about money.

davep,

@RickiTarr That's some weird puritanical manifest destiny BS right there. Do people still believe that rubbish?

Was setting up a new virtual host in Apache on my RPi, which has involved much gnashing of teeth and questioning of life choices.

Went down a rabbit hole of HSTS preloading of my principal host causing the other to flip to it along with many other increasingly improbable things.

It was obviously DNS. My PC and phone (and router) were storing old values. Restarted my phone, connected to a different network and it was fine to install the Let's Encrypt certificate.

I bloody hate computers.

davep,

Ok, there were other issues along the way, but the DNS one was the final straw.

davep,

@graphite @sigmasternchen

DNS Caching...

davep,

It might be a rubbish site for now, but it's delivered to you securely 😂

davep,

So, I set up a staging WordPress Pi server, and then set up a second virtual host for the production Pi server (it already had another domain on it). The latter worked fine with php but refuses to play ball with WordPress.

Gah. I think I'll swap out the two, and add a second virtual host to the one that plays ball with WordPress, then reinstall Debian on the old prod one as Staging.

Even then, the Staging to Prod process looks like it might be a bit dodgy.

Bloody computers.

I've said this on here at least half a dozen times, but every single time I look out of my front windows, the over-the-road neighbours are always going somewhere or coming back from somewhere. Every time! What are they upto?! How can they be coming or going so much?! The best I've got is that they do a shared Uber or Deliveroo service. Or are hitmen (hitpeople).

davep,

@TheBreadmonkey Hitmen don't do multiple jobs per day. Uber-esque drug dealer, probably.
