Listened to the latest @atpfm and could relate to @marcoarment story about cheerleaders and social groups far too well (for me it was 5th grade).

and are both places worthy of being a some part of - for now - for different reasons.

rolls out very very basic moderation tools today.

But i'm actually more interested in some recent information shared about making your own algorithms.

Unpopular opinion on but I think algorithms CAN BE USEFUL THINGS.

Especially if you can create your own (which I do to various degrees on social), but not when they are pushed and abused by a corporation or selfish party.

@Ciantic I don't see an "explore" tab. I can see local timelines and federated. Sometimes I want to see local instances but that's not an algo.

My problem w/ Mastodon is that i don't seem to see everything i try - I've seen posts missing from other instances, search, etc. Sounds like it's getting better but I think certain user defined algos might be hard for Mastodon (and admittingly others too) to fully support.

But I can do this today with Tweetdeck so needs to happen elsewhere! 🙂

Built mostly with AI.

@Ciantic Nice. Still a valid plugin especially for someone who wouldn't know that, but that's good to know too.

wpbriefs.com is an AI powered podcast. Worth a mention just for the logo alone. I'm thinking about starting a rival called wpboxers.

Another day another " and/or will win" post in apparent reaction to... something.

https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/yes-the-fediverse-will-win/

First off: I agree/think some of arguments are sound. Fedi isn't going away. Donation models work.

But face it - Fedi will never attract majority. Nor do they want/should to.

Currently as alt. go (still in diapers) gets my vote over .

But that nor any other social has to FAIL in order for Fediverse to "WIN". There is no one "winner".

I wrote some thoughts on AI in (or, really, thoughts on ecosystem innovation generally): https://make.wordpress.org/core/2023/05/02/lets-talk-wordpress-core-artificial-intelligence/#comment-44844

davidbisset,

@rmccue I don't think any tools on any decent system can. But AI can build enough of a site for designer to then take over. Broadly I would agree but developers like us tend to forget that majority just want more simpler setups and applications. Complex stuff always required elbow grease from human brains. 🧠

davidbisset,
@davidbisset@phpc.social avatar

@rmccue @tim Putting AI to the side - a separate discussion from my original thought - I think we need more focus on tools that help with some of the complexities and time savers. WP has done it before (_s, frameworks).

Again I think as devs we over complicate and estimate things. On the dev side and on what the users want side. I'm already seeing paths that will make building WP sites w/ FSE so much easier. Revisit in 6 months. 🙂

davidbisset,
@davidbisset@phpc.social avatar

@tim @rmccue AI doesn't have to write the code unchecked. I've seen first hand AI increasing productively of devs that still produce good code w/ best practices.

I think once you think outside of "Ai has to do everything, unchecked" then it opens up more possibilities for better or worse. Great tools by humans helped by AI are possible, it's just up to the community to determine time and effort allocations.

davidbisset,
@davidbisset@phpc.social avatar

@rmccue @tim i don't doubt that's case.

davidbisset,
@davidbisset@phpc.social avatar

@tim @rmccue ...and this isn't anything new. I've been in tech three decades and i've heard similar things when new tech comes out ("Just have Photoshop color correct that for you..."). There will be lessons (including a few hard ones) on this tech. I guess it doesn't surprise me or I give eye rolls when I read these simplifications too.

I know you've seen that "curve of new tech adoption" too. We are in that wild crazy early part. Amazing (and sad) how history repeats itself.
