Heinlein is problematic for a lot of reasons, but I've always been inspired by this:

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Interesting - was just flipping through this (https://www.kansascityfed.org/Jackson%20Hole/documents/9744/Jones-handout.pdf) And he noted that as society gets less sexist/racist, talent gets better allocated. I wonder how much total factor productivity gain over the last century came from just... not actively damaging the lives of talented people? That's nice but suggests future gains will be harder, right?

@ZachWeinersmith I mean, it doesn't matter where it came from. Future gains will be harder regardless, unless we assume an infinite Prime Resource

    daria, to python

    Folks, if you could suggest improvements to the documentation, what would it be? Improved ToC? More examples? Different structure?

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @diazona @daria Yes, 100% agree. In fact, I'm not sure I'd change the python docs--references need to exist.

    I've already made the change on my end. When I have a use-case-based question, I look for a stack overflow post.

    But if the question is "how can docs be better" maybe add one of the other three types: https://www.writethedocs.org/videos/eu/2017/the-four-kinds-of-documentation-and-why-you-need-to-understand-what-they-are-daniele-procida/

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @daria Simply better explanations.

    I only ever use the to look up specific facts, like constants or string format codes. If I need to understand something I look for a tutorial elsewhere.

    The docs, like a lot of technical articles, value accuracy and precision over clarity and understanding.

    First make me understand the mental model. Then tweak the specifics. Don't start with the details.

    #Weekend #Projects

    Make my own #guitar lead sheet(s) instead of the stupid chord sheets/tabs available everywhere.

    #MuseScore seems really great for this.

    The only problem is that while I know about #music than a chord sheet assumes I know less than I probably need to, for instance, line the lyrics up with the beat.

    But it's all a #learning process! It's OK to be terrible! Everyone starts somewhere! (he snarled through gritted teeth)

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    If someone knows a way to make put fretboard diagrams off to the side or at the top/bottom of the page, I'd love that.

    I can probably remember how to finger Dsus4, D7 and Am7 but G/B will likely escape me down the road.

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    We seem to be getting somewhere!

    This is compiled from multiple sources. The chords come from an amalgamation of play-along videos (where the chord is the open fingering played with a capo on the first fret) modified by me to things I can reasonably play

    The part is only there because needs to attach lyrics to something. So I'm transposing an existing piano arrangement to this (apparent) key

    can play . Playing along (w/o capo) sounds great!

    I've got two recent grads in my group under my de facto...mentorship? Command?

    They are both very smart. One is very confident he can do things but is less effective, one is less confident and more effective.

    I'm very unused to constructive criticism and other skills so I'm not sure how to turn down the confidence and turn up the effectiveness.

    I mean, I know what to do. "Test. Be skeptical of your own work/ideas."

    I don't know how to say that.

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    Welp. Got my 100x back at least.

    By fixing a bug in his code where he used the wrong variable name in a timestep.

    Sure, anyone can have a bug. But this bug would be wasting him ~30m per test (vs ~10s) and should have been found first thing.

    Is there an emoji for "more disappointed/exasperated than angry"?

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    I think the confident/ineffective one is more theoretically trained and I'm more practically focused. Maybe he'd do better in a research setting

    (Or maybe not, since he already doesn't really check his work)

    This code he's written is too slow by at least two orders of magnitude and I personally would aim for 10^3 faster. Do I make him fix it? Just use it as-is anyway? Fix it myself?

    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    I knew he was smart albeit cocky.

    I stopped him on everything he was doing to concentrate on a branch he's been "this week for sure"ing for months. (Those other things weren't moving either)

    I suggested that we pair-program it to get it optimized

    He turned me down on Thursday

    Today he changed his mind

    As a parent of 5, I know how to be gentle but firm. I've been told I'm good at teaching. I love fixing things

    I feel like tomorrow will be fun.

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    I was right, this was fun.

    I mentioned early on that it was probably going to take 2h or more. He was like....what, no, maybe 30m.

    Reader, we took 3.5h and didn't even really finish.

    Cleaned up the significantly and got the easier case from 2m to 11s, hard case from 20m to 2m.

    We had to quit, but I think we could have squeezed another 2x out of his code alone. We can easily get another 10x from multiprocessing.

    So....first of all, they still sell Official Sheet of popular songs. I bet it's a huge business for tribute and cover and school jazz bands, etc, but it's still funny to me

    And second of all the "official" sheet music is in at least one case in a different key than the release itself.

    why. why would you do that.

    Ride by Twenty One Pilots (yes, I'm going to attempt to make and play my own lead sheet based on this) is F# on the radio but F on paper.

    davidr,
    @davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @eyesquash I'm 100% guessing here, but I bet F# fits their vocal range better. And I bet they have their instruments tuned up a semitone. (Watching the live performances, he seems to be playing an F fingering.) So maybe the sheet music is what they practiced to, but they didn't write the alternate tuning on there (or did and I missed it).

    No kidding.

    Even in an R&D context, too many are project-focused instead of tool-focused. It isn't about delivering a result, it's about ending up with a capability!

    Given the motto of the university I work for, it's very frustrating that the and the operators barely talk to each other.

    The engs don't know what problems need solving, even when working on something adjacent. The ops don't know what the engs are on about and don't have time to learn.

    Success here is mostly just showing up to meetings on both sides and being a conduit. A catalyst.
