@jwz xfinity prepaid can be a good internet service backup, if your domicile is wired for it. the modem kit is pretty cheap and because its prepaid they can't screw you over too much. and you can buy service by the week.
Coachella beverage prices (snagged randomly off Instagram). Note: only two of these items are hydrating (water, hydration drink). Curious what sizes that water/hydration drink are, we could calculate the damage to your pocketbook for staying properly hydrated in 94F weather for two days. 🤔 UPDATE: three items, apparently alcohol free beer is ALSO hydrating 🤯 #Coachella
@ai6yr@divya that Heineken 0.0 Alcohol Free option could actually be a better option than water!
> In a 2016 study, if male athletes drank nonalcoholic beer 45 minutes before a draining workout, they wound up less dehydrated afterward than after drinking beer, and similar to drinking water, but with a better ratio of sodium to potassium. Drinking the nonalcoholic beer “could help maintain electrolyte homeostasis during exercise,” the researchers concluded.
(And yeah… for some reason they decided to do the study on just male athletes. Sigh.)
@ai6yr@divya it is amazing how far beer has come. just a few years ago, the best they could make is bad water (Bud Light). now they make better water (Heineken 0.0).
in countries that have easy tax filing (the government prepares your taxes for you based on what it already knows)... how does withholding work? do you still get a refund/tax bill when you file or do they just adjust your withholding automagically as needed?
@divya kaiser has always been great about filling ADD prescriptions for me (i've been taking ADD medication for decades)… part of me wonders if they are pulling that off during the ongoing shortages by trying to curtail growth
Until the fediverse (Mastodon in particular) comes up with a workable "Share to Mastodon" (or the like) button like the ubiquitous Twitter, Facebook, etc. buttons, this place will be lacking a vital capability.
Update: The comments below indicate that there's a lot of progress in this area already.
I’m flummoxed. Just saw on my inactive Twitter account (which still has 112k followers) that the blue tick is back. The Musk team had taken it away when anyone could begin to buy one. And there’s a notice my account is being reviewed because I purchased a subscription “on another device.” I did not, however, buy a subscription. 🙄
tfw your wiper blades start streaking so you look up how often you're supposed to change them on your six year old car and it says every six months to a year
@divya doing a network balance check is too slow. particularly on fare readers that can't be on a hardwired network (those onboard buses and trains, for example)
@divya iirc the mobile clipper readers don't even connect to cellular… instead they basically sync all the tags and new passes to load onto cards when they pull into the yard.
The West Portal crash was so violent that I’m finding it hard to believe that simple pedal confusion was the cause of the excessive acceleration.
My pet theory is that an accelerator was stuck down by an improperly installed floormat, exacerbated by a panicked driver who tried to rock the accelerator loose by nudging it down even more (when they could have just slammed the brakes, which would definitely have cut the throttle in any model year 2014 car).
In any case, the increasing popularity of high performance SUV's (particularly EV's) does not bode well here. A Rivian R1S can go 0-60 in 3.1 seconds on stock all-season tires, and can also (thanks in part to its weight) plow right through a guardrail. Probably the only redeeming factor here is that the massive g-forces would make it require a bit more force to push the accelerator down even further.
Anyway... why do these vehicles exist? The only safe place for acceleration like this is a racetrack... so why are you able to do this in an SUV?
@divya fwiw the combined sewer system isn't entirely a downside. Treating street runoff water means we're filtering out cigarette butts, etc before sending the water back out to the bay. (also I highly recommend the free SF wastewater plant public tours!)
@divya ok i dont want to lose my urbanist bona fides by continually talking about cars but i just remembered... i test drove a used BMW i3 a few years ago and loved it. the interiors are gorgeous. and they are super small and easy to park. and i think they're pretty cheap used!
I don't know how they do it, but the Kaiser Permanente pharmacy is consistently good at keeping Adderall in stock. It's been over a year since I encountered any hurdles whatsoever in getting it filled. If you take Adderall, it might be worth switching to Kaiser for this reason alone.
With the Guardian, Mission Local, and New Republic all covering big spending in SF, it would be a great time for a progressive to announce for mayor. Just saying
