Radical idea for social media: we should be able to leave a like on other people's like actions. If somebody likes (or "favorites" in Mastodon parlance) my post, I should be able to express that I like that they liked what I had to say

We could continue giving each other back and forth likes until eventually two accounts bound together in reciprocal liking reach the like singularity

The Stand didn't even crack Forbes' Top 10 list of Stephen King books, and I'm curious as to how this miscarriage of justice came about.

For no particular reason, I had The Rooster Bar by John Grisham on my TBR and started reading it this week. I don't normally go for "airport books," but this one is a ton of fun. Now I remember why I read over a dozen of Grisham's books in the 90s and early 2000s. It's been a while since I picked him up... almost a couple decades, but I'm glad I did again.

FTR, The Rooster Bar has nothing to do with chickens. 😉

My heart aches for the children who will no longer have access to their local library because some arrogant assholes decided to be offended by books with new ideas and different perspectives.

The cruelty is the point.

@vikingkong @bookstodon What "garbage" are you specifically referring to? Books by Truman Capote? Oscar WIlde? Annie Proulx? Madeline Miller?

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@IveyJanette @bookstodon I wouldn't put it past them.

That's why book bans are so stupid. Every kid with a smart phone has ready access to content much worse than the most scandalous book available for checkout at the local public library. It's so performative.

This week I'm wrapping up the audio of Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCann. This is the second audiobook in a row for me with truly raw depictions of people just scraping by and trying to make the best of their situation. Tillie's narration is heartbreaking. Next audio read needs to be something not so heavy.

Related: now I feel like I should watch "The Walk" starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (not a bad thing)

I don't understand how some of these people survive everyday life.

Do you really not understand how a checkout counter works, middle-aged-white-lady? Why are you putting your card in the reader before the cashier has even rung up all your items? Why are you taking your soda off the belt? Why, when you realize you didn't pay for your soda, did you then pay for it in cash and wait for your change? Have you literally never bought anything before, or are you incapable of considering how your actions might affect others, or are you incapable of thinking more than three seconds ahead of the current moment?

How do these people survive everyday life if they can't even manage basic social awareness in one of the most common retail settings on the planet?

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron I get impatient with people too. OTOH, I've been discombobulated under specific circumstances where a simple transaction ends up taking much longer than it should. Maybe your middle-aged-white-lady was just having a bad day and it was a one-off?

@polygon We got Gollum's backstory at the beginning of Return of The King. It lasted about five minutes, IIRC, and that's really all we needed.

This is turning out to be a book I'm not terribly excited about: The Dog Of The South by Charles Portis. The tone sort of reminds me of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but set in Texas and Mexico and without the hardcore drugs. Parts are funny, but mostly it kind of drags and I'm not sure what the point is. If I wasn't already more than halfway through, I'd probably add it to the DNF pile. @bookstodon

The "Three Body Problem" on Netflix on it's own is bad, but once you compare it to the book, it's much much worse.

The ONLY really good book to movie adaptation I have ever seen was "Silence of the lambs". It more or less just turned the book into a script. The most accurate adaptation I've seen to this day.

What's YOUR favorite book to movie adaptation? Tell us why!

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@Mrfunkedude Are we just talking about movies, or do mini-series count as well?

IMO, Hollywood is more likely than not to shit all over the source material. There are, of course, exceptions. Here are a few that come immediately to mind:

Shawshank Redemption
Seabiscuit
The Crossing
Good Omens
I Love You, Beth Cooper
Sleepers
Lonesome Dove
A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version)
The Road
Interview With The Vampire
Into the Wild

10 authors, of whose books I've read at least five:

Ursula Le Guin
Kim Stanley Robinson
Octavia Butler
N. K. Jemisin
Becky Chambers
Iain M. Banks
Martha Wells
M. R. Carey
Lois McMaster Bujold
Vonda McIntyre

I don't repeat a lot of authors, but surprisingly there are 10 where I've read at least 5 of their books:

Stephen King (by a mile)
Neil Gaiman
John Grisham
Joe Hill
JK Rowling
George R.R. Martin
James Michener
Malcolm Gladwell
Nathaniel Philbrick
Michael Crichton

This list was a bit of an eye-opener for me. With the exception of Rowling (I read the Harry Potter b4 we knew she was awful), everyone on the list is male and of them, only Gladwell is not white.

dbsalk,

@RacerX I have zero confidence that the Bears front office is capable of making the right personnel moves to ensure Caleb Williams is able to be effective. Nothing has changed since they signed Justin Fields.

Nothing will change until the McCaskeys sell the team. They've proven to be completely inept at running a sports franchise.

I hope I'm wrong.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@RacerX I won't apologize for my "hope for the best, expect the worst" attitude when it comes to the football team I've rooted for my entire life. The one single constant that's been around for 45 different starting quarterbacks and 8 head coaching tenures doesn't show any sign of going away.

The owners keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. We all know what that means.

I am a BLAST at tailgate parties. 🤣 🏈

Speaking of dealing with assholes, Is there a term for a person that insists on referring to the Washington franchise by their previous (and very racist) name?

I'll stipulate that "Washington Commanders" is terrible, but a significant improvement over what was in place before.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@wjmaggos [pauses and thinks about it for a moment]

You're not wrong.

I feel like "Washington Commanders" did not go through any kind of focus group testing.

And while we're on the topic, "Cleveland Guardians" probably didn't, either.

Listening to the audio of This Is Your Brain On Sports by L. Jon Wertheim and Sam Sommers.

I wish I had read it closer to its 2016 pub date. 8 years later, parts are a little outdated. Example: in a list of active QBs at the time, several had yet to reach their peak. Now they're seasoned veterans or retired.

Amusingly, when quoting PK Subban, the narrator gave him a French accent. Subban grew up in Toronto.
