Actual live clams.

The debt ceiling deal has passed.

But it is a disgrace that Republicans brought us so close to the edge of catastrophe.

Moving forward, we must abolish the debt ceiling so that no party can use it to threaten the livelihoods of Americans for political gain ever again.

@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@rbreich or abolish the perpetrating party? A modest proposal ;->

Found out today from @gemelliz that TO residents have to vote at their own polling location on election day ... which may not be convenient ...

BUT
you can vote at ANY advance polling place in the city from June 8-13! \o/

This thread gives you
▪ dates/times for advance voting,
▪ a link to find your poll location options,
▪ links to find out about the candidates.

(Only 28% voted last time, which means every vote can have a big impact!)

🧵 1/x ...

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

🧵 2/x ...

Advance Voting dates:

During advance vote ONLY, from June 8 to 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., eligible voters can vote at ANY of the available voting locations across the city.

This convenient option is unique to this by-election, because there is only one race and therefore only one ballot at all 50 locations listed on this page

Locations:

https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections/by-election/by-election-advance-voting-locations/
(Locations are subject to change, please visit this page regularly.)

HOWEVER, on Election Day:

On election day Monday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

you MUST vote at YOUR designated location.

Find your voting location information on MyVote : https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections/by-election/by-election-voter-information/myvote-by-elections/

Who's running?

Whoa, over 100 candidates, & a dog!

There's a full list, with analysis, on TheLocal.TO:
https://thelocal.to/toronto-mayor-candidates-2023/

And an easy to read, formatted summary of the top 7 polling candidates on the CP24 site:

"Key promises and policies from the leading candidates:"
https://www.cp24.com/mobile/news/promise-tracker-what-the-leading-candidates-in-toronto-s-mayoral-race-are-pledging-to-do-1.6414976

Or do a search on your fav's name.
These days, it's worth adding: pay attention to the source of any (mis-) information you find! Check multiple sources!

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

🧵 5/5 ...

Why am I telling you this?

Changed rules made voting harder to access; only 28% of eligible residents voted last time.

I hope you'll share this info with your busy (or forgetful) friends :-)

Voting tells city hall what you care about, even if your candidate does not win. It's an important feedback mechanism for the democratic process (when it works well ;-> )

Please vote.

It matters to all of us. (Including the most vulnerable and least likely to vote.)

Just checked in on my "US news" mastodon list. Eww.

Yeah, not gonna do that again soon.
Election posturing and blame slinging.

Enough 🖐

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@gdinwiddie ... plus, I'm on vacation! Why did I do it? Why? Why? 🤦‍♀️

;->

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@gdinwiddie I can't help but feel that all the righteous pundits and anchors are making the election "news" now for pure ratings.

I'm so tired of US "news" consisting of "give us your opinion, of course we don't know, allegedly, we'll have to see, it's too soon to say"

If it's too soon to say, STOP saying it! 🤦‍♀️

I try not to boost US nonsense unless it's of the order: "let us not turn a blind eye to fascist baby steps"

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@gdinwiddie ... oh, or if it's entertainingly ridiculous ;->

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@gdinwiddie I do like Anand's ideas. I don't read much :-) but I did attend a community call when he published his last book. 👍

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@gdinwiddie it occurs to me that "entertainingly ridiculous" describes half of mainstream 'news' lately. 🤔
And it does upset me because it's normalising this scoffing (which assumes it has to be this way).
So, lesson for me: don't let the news set the tone ✔

As the Toronto by-election approaches (June 26) I will be tweeting about it, because it's an important juncture for this city and voter turnout has been incredibly low.

If you live outside Ontario, and feel ¯_(ツ)_/¯ then just filter out hashtags and and these posts should disappear. Voila!

And really the sheer absurdity of European Sleeper

Here are two determined guys. They lease a freight locomotive, 2 ancient sleeping cars (at least with air con), 6 couchettes without air con (also old) and 2 seating carriages

And they manage to run a Berlin-Brussels night train, something that others - like DB, NS or SNCB - could much more easily do with their financial means BUT REFUSE TO EVEN TRY

And basic though it is it’s booked up all summer
