FUN FACT:
if you build electronic devices which contain a raspberry pi in them, consider what will happen if one of them gets thrown out.
someone might open them up, stick the microSD card in them into a reader, and open up that tantalizing "apps.json" file which has YOUR GOD DAMN AWS KEYS? IN UNENCRYPTED PLAIN TEXT?

I am working through the [at] pikuma [at] mastodon.gamedev.place course on NES development and I can now make Mario float ethereally through a single screen of the Mushroom kingdom

Gif of a NES emulator showing a single screen from "Super Mario Bros", where Mario is floating about the screen in an ethereal way. To the side of the window is a hex editor, which shows various values changing in RAM as Mario moves about.

@mrsbeanbag BWT is quite inspiring. a RLE-friendly transform that is reversible without auxiliary information isn't something you see every day.

On May 22, 1849, Congressman Abraham Lincoln received a patent for his method of lifting boats over shoals.

The invention "Buoying Vessels Over Shoals" used a set of inflatable fabric bladders along the sides of a boat to lift the boat, to help it pass over bars and shallow waters, and to help free it when stuck.

There is no evidence that the invention was ever put to practical use.

Lincoln remains the only U.S. president to have a patent in his name.

It's fun to blame Red Lobster going down because of all you can eat shrimp, but no one really emphasizes this bit:

"A private equity firm bought the chain ten years ago from Darden Restaurants.... The firm, Golden Gate Capital, funded the deal partly by selling Red Lobster's real estate.

That meant the chain had to start paying rent. That's now a major financial factor in Red Lobster's bankruptcy filing"

VC again leaving a trail of destruction behind them

Calculating only some pixels both spatially and temporally is pretty much the same as DLSS, right? :P

New Blog Post: A Low Discrepancy Shuffle Iterator (+Random Access & Inversion)

What if you had a shuffle iterator that could traverse a shuffle, without actually shuffling.

What if that shuffle was a low discrepancy sequence so neighboring values were very different and had nice numerical properties?

Another POV: selection without replacement. stateless, and low discrepancy.

@demofox oh nice. i wrote one that pulls items from a set (a shuffling ring buffer, see screenshout for demo output), but doing this without a set at all is excellent :)

oh wow, and yours is invertible, even. :)

@demofox I used to work on a marketing platform that had this competition code dispenser system that would dispense predetermined codes in a random order - it did this by pre-populating a table with millions of rows and then randomly selecting indexes and marking them used... I came up with a stateless shuffling system to remove the setup / indexing overheads. I'd excitedly tell people about it to be met with much eye-glazing ;)
It's nice to see that it's actually a thing in the real world.

I actually MISS playing Pong with my father and grandfather.

Funny how switching the RCA channel selector to '3', breaking our the paddles, and playing Pong with family can be missed nearly a half-century later.

I saw this voltmeter at the electronics flea market. Look at that massive probe! It looks like you need to check your back blast before using it.
Apparently it's for REALLY high voltages? Like, 3kV?

Fun bug: my wife and I were playing Wheel of Fortune on the switch. We each created female characters, but the game crashed while spinning the wheel. Fortunately it saves your mid-game progress, except when we resumed playing, my wife's character was now a man.

She got transed by a crash!

Two of my recent shader toys display just black on iOS Safari (no compilation errors), while a separate iOS app shows them "okay" (some bugs, but at least not a black screen).

Things I teach my kids:

• “No” is a complete sentence.
• If you’re not having a good time you can leave.
• Never make yourself smaller just to make other people more comfortable.
• It’s okay not to be okay.
• Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.
• Other people’s opinions of you are none of your business.
• Speak as kindly to yourself as you would speak to others.
• Be your own greatest cheerleader, always.

It’s never too late to learn these things.
