Is there anywhere in that serves a traditional East Coast-style ? I’m talking twice as thick or more than the fried spring rolls all over the place out here, stuffed with cabbage and shrimp and roast pork, and a wrapper deep fried until bubbling. I’ve got a craving…

Ah yes. It's time for the latest installment of "Bad faith attacks against Black women in elite institutions."

We started with: "If you block hate speech we will say that you're against the 1st amendment and free speech, but if you listen to our demands and allow hate speech we'll call you antisemites."

Then we went to: "I can copy/paste from Wikipedia, but if you miss a quotation mark you are a fraud and unfit to be at Harvard."

Now we're on: "DEI programs are so expensive!"

No, they're not

@mekkaokereke anyone who thinks DEI at universities is expensive needs to compare to the cost of football & basketball.

@ifixcoinops I got through the first episode and decided it was Glass Onion meets Only Murders in the Building but without any humor or self-awareness.

Sounds like, even if my analysis is flawed, the conclusion was correct.

(Which is great to hear as I was wavering.)

On a totally unrelated note, I’m looking at some low-key LED plant lights for my office. (Can’t have more plants if I don’t have more light. And I want to keep the current ones alive!)

I was thinking about either clip-ons or that style with a plate that sits below the pot to hold the arm, preferably with a timer because I’m not that good a plant daddy.

Anyone have recommendations? Search results are a hot mess for this one.

From what I've heard, the term "def" (in the late 1980s) meant something that was interesting or cool. Then Russell Simmons came along and started the comedy series Jam. If this is true, the band Def Leppard inspired the term. How is it that a rock band inspire a producing legend to name his show that way? I'm sure it's a long connection, but that blows my mind.

disappearinjon,
@disappearinjon@wandering.shop avatar

@Ertain @Binder well Def Jam the hiphop record label, was founded by Rick Rubin in ‘83 with Russell Simmons joining in ‘84. He doesn’t start Def Comedy Jam til ‘92.

Now ‘83 was right when Def Leppard broke in the states (Pyromania) but idk if that’s what Rick Rubin was thinking about. I feel like the word was already in circulation here but that was slightly before my time!

disappearinjon,
@disappearinjon@wandering.shop avatar

@Ertain @Binder The OED has the hip-hop meaning of Def attested to as early as 1981 by Bill Safire at the NYT, with some online sources claiming ’79 without specific citations I can find. So it seems pretty clear that Rick Rubin was already using this meaning when the label was named.

    @lauren I’m not sure that there’s such a strict line between the two, more of a continuum. When I plop myself down in a comfy chair and sigh heavily is that sigh voluntary or involuntary? I could certainly suppress it if I desired (and planned ahead), but I also don’t do it on purpose.

    @bouriquet @lkanies @Cyrus @mttaggart @mekkaokereke out here in the PNW, we’re hydro. Still impacts, but different ones.

    And when the electric company burns gas, you can have inspections to ensure no leakage, minimize inefficient burns, ensure pollution controls are met—not something you can do with an army of gas stoves.

    And, at the risk of returning to the original article, minimizing indoor pollution at home is an important consideration.

    Spouse asked why I liked the Iliad (and why I’m excited to read the Wilson translation) and I said it was because it was about the apparent utility of toxic masculinity and how civilization exists to rein it in.

    I’m not sure if it’s a true statement or my misreading/misremembering of the poem. But I look forward to finding out if that lens still makes sense this time!

    I have interviewed 100s of candidates for software engineering positions.

    I’ve done take-home tests, in person challenges, pair programming with the candidates.

    All of them were awful experiences for me and especially for the candidate.

    I can only think of a single instance where a code challenge exposed a poor software engineer and I could definitely have made the same assessment just by talking to them.

    Lately I’ve stopped doing any software or mental puzzles.

    I don’t do any of that when I interview designers or QA people or HR people, so why would I be particularly toxic towards software engineers during the hiring process?

    Instead, I actually read their resumes (which is significantly quicker than doing interviews, asking them to repeat the same information), and then I ask them questions like:

    • Where do you get your tech news?
    • How do you learn about new technologies?
    • What do you most appreciate in your coworkers today?
    • What is a perfect workday like for you?

    I specifically avoid trap-style questions like “what is your greatest weakness?” or “why are you leaving your current job?”

    I recommend that you make a plan for what you want to learn about the candidate, e.g. “are they good at acquiring new skills?” or “do they share the same values as the team?” and then structure the interview around that.

    Be a non-toxic manager. Make your company look good during the interview process. Get better candidates.

    #jobs

    disappearinjon,
    @disappearinjon@wandering.shop avatar

    @anders the thing I most clearly learned during my stint as an engineering manager, and my longer time interviewing engineers, is that so little of what I thought was predictive turned out to be such. Asking questions about projects they’ve already completed and asking them to explain their work seemed at least somewhat better.
