The other thru eBay via .. FUCK!

I'm the guy who still masks in public and continues to be bothered by humanity's response to COVID. But I am not upset about redefining the term "airborne transmission" to be more accurate.

Also, Pluto isn't a "planet," a tomato is a "fruit," and we don't have a clear enough definition of "sandwich" to determine whether a hot dog is one or not.

Maybe someday that will be resolved once and for all — by redefining the definition of "sandwich."

dmakovec,
@dmakovec@theblower.au avatar

@nyquildotorg a sandwich requires two separate pieces of bread to be squished together. If the hotdog is created by one of those pokey-holey spike things, or simply by slicing a roll in half, is is definitely NOT a sandwich.

Can anyone in the inner west recommend a decent sparky?

I've got a pair of extractor fans in the toilet and neighbouring laundry who need to be beefed up and whose duct work is in desperate need of decoupling because of an unfortunate air back-flow situation.

Also I think it's Shelly dimmer time

So, Microsoft is silently installing Copilot onto Windows Server 2022 systems and this is a disaster.

How can you push a tool that siphons data to a third party onto a security-critical system?

What privileges does it have upon install? Who thought this is a good idea? And most importantly, who needs this?

dmakovec,
@dmakovec@theblower.au avatar

@miblo @Walrus @sos I switched to Obsidian for my notes and it's been an excellent replacement. All notes are stored as plaintext MD files and there are lots of plugins for specialised functionality. You can pay them for Cross-device sync or just use whatever file sync mechanism you prefer

I have an odd problem with in . In its docker container, the command wget does not resolve any domains. It just times out. Curl does resolve hosts correctly. Problem is: is using wget for updates, which then fail after a while (silently).

Other containers have a working wget, so it looks like it's homeassistant + docker in this case.

The container is (as documented) in host network mode.

Any ideas to fix this?

@homeassistant

dmakovec,
@dmakovec@theblower.au avatar

@guerda @homeassistant I suspect I encountered something similar once. I notice my docker-compose.yml has an explicit DNS entry pointing to a resolver IP (in this case, my pihole). Might work for you?

Installed debian netinst on a single board computer (had jack of ubuntu when it started saying "hey there's these security updates you didn't pay for). No curl, no git, no tmux, no avahi. I love it, a proper OS where you only get the bloat you ask for. Fingers enjoying the apt-install dance as I get this board set up to be a platformio dev helper. Remember, melting the USB ports in a scratch board beats melting your dev machine!

dmakovec,
@dmakovec@theblower.au avatar

@Unixbigot dufuq did Ubuntu start charging for security updates?

dmakovec,
@dmakovec@theblower.au avatar

@Unixbigot I see. The way the marketing material reads is that LTS gets 5 years of updates for everybody from main repo, and 10 years for those forking out the moola.

Their stance on Universe repo (software maintained outside of Canonical) is a bit less clear - "best effort" (whatever that is) patches for anybody who doesn't go pro, and 10 years for those who do.

Seems kinda sane on the surface. Curious if you're running 19.04 or older, which would have just hit the magical 5 year mark?

So I just got my ESP32-S3-Box-3, flashed it with for , set up the pipeline with cloud and the results were.. not great. When it works, it's fine. But it's way too crashy at the moment to be usable unfortunately.

Nothing showing up in the device logs. I added a heartbeat logger just to prove the device itself wasn't crashing. It often completes a task, then sits there with the "speaking house" image on the screen and doesn't accept a subsequent command. I need to reboot it. Any tips, folks?

Dear @homeassistant users, do you have any smart light bulb to recommend that works fully locally and it integrates with ? I am open to WiFi and Zigbee variants.

I just ran into a WiFi-based TP-Link Tapo bulb for half of its usual price. I bet it phones to the headquarters. It'd be great if it can be flashed with a libre firmware. Any thoughts?

@fishidwardrobe @mdimjasevic @homeassistant I've heard mention of problematic pairing with Hues, but my experience (using Z2M with a Conbee II) has been: take bulb out of box, screw into socket, turn on, click "Permit Join (all)" in Z2M, wait 30 seconds, done.

So the Aqara sensor on my garage roller door occasionally registers as open when it's not - presumably owing to some magnetic interference (I've got like 7 other identical sensors on other doors that don't do this). For now, when pings me about it, I've got the notifications including a still from the garage cam so I can tell if it's a false alarm.

But I'm wondering if I can dip my toes into with a mini project that scans the still photo and figures out for itself if the door is open, then cancels out false alarms automatically. Anybody know where I could start with this?

dmakovec,
@dmakovec@theblower.au avatar

@AngryAnt it doesn't sound as much fun 🤣

Truth is, sometimes it just doesn't report closed at all when the door closes, and the only solution is to open and close the door. It's not like it's flapping or anything
