Sun City Girls – “Sun City Girls” (1984)
First run pressing of 1000 copies on Placebo Records
Desert landscapes, weather, people, and culture are so unique. One of the quietest places on Earth, deserts tend to produce a lot of introspection. I assume this is why some of the weirdest and most creative art, particularly music, comes out of such regions.
I could never keep up with all the output from the Sun City Girls and the two brothers that constituted its core. But that’s ok. Their first two albums are so good, with both music and silly, clever lyrics.
"Cowboy Junkies are an alternative country and folk-rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1985 by Alan Anton (bassist), Michael Timmins (songwriter, guitarist), Peter Timmins (drummer) and Margo Timmins (vocalist). The three Timminses are siblings...'Sweet Jane' is a song by American rock band the Velvet Underground...Lou Reed was often quoted as saying that the Cowboy Junkies' version was his favorite." Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:
Released in 1988 on the album 'Fisherman's Blues', The Waterboys' iconic song blends Celtic folk, rock, and country. Its expansive sound features fiddles, mandolin, and soaring vocals, painting a vivid picture of life by the sea. This timeless classic marked a shift in the band's direction and remains a beloved anthem.
"Let's Dance" is a song by the English singer-songwriter #DavidBowie, originally included as the title track of his 1983 album of the same name. Co-produced by #NileRodgers of #Chic, it was recorded in late 1982 at the #PowerStation in New York City. With the assistance of engineer #BobClearmountain, Rodgers transformed the song from its #folkRock origins to a #dance number through studio effects and new musicians Bowie had yet to work with. https://youtu.be/J0HD76SZH54
For @loewe's #MusicWomenWednesday, Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust, a song refering to her relationship with Bob Dylan. Written/composed by her in 1974 and released in 1975. My favorite Joan Baez song 💞
More songs about finding/creating home, inspired by my recent move. Graham Nash meant this as a domesstic-bliss lovesong to Joni Mitchell, but I'm taking it as a song of self-love, of finding myself worthy of living in a home that supports and protects me... as every human being deserves.
#GreatAlbums1980s - #TheWaterboys – Fisherman's Blues (1988). In one of pop's sharpest left turns, M. Scott recast the Waterboys from big-audio spiritualists to mandolin-plucking folkies on this LP. Bits of the Big Music survive in "We Will Not Be Lovers" and "World Party" (the song). But the LP stakes its main claim in the driving folk balladry of "And a Bang on the Ear" and the infectious title track. A friend of mine called Scott's new genre "Heavy Wood." Perfect.
For this week's #MusicWomenWednesday, check out this amazing sounding album 'Melt the Honey' that comes out Friday. The band is PACKS, aka Madeline Link.
These songs have such a cool, lo-fi feel- they reminds me of early Beck songs or maybe quieter Sonic Youth or Sebadoh songs, with Link's cool, unaffected voice and some great lyrics. It's folky and catchy as hell.
'Melt the Honey' comes out Jan 19 (Friday) and it's definitely a contender for my top favorites of this year. Listen/grab it here:
