Holy crap I'm 30 today. Hope this decade is as fun as the last :)

So the new Instagram text thing is reported to have ActivityPub support and instead of being happy at all the new labor that could potentially be coming to the standard, Mastodon people are now actively encouraging instances to not federate with any of that stuff. K.

Anyone else getting noticeably worse battery life with WatchOS 9.5 (including 9.5.1)? I’ve gone from like ~36 hours to under 24.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@gruber Is it bad that I gave up on smart watches, went back to 100% analog watches (+ an Oura ring) and haven't regretted it for a minute? Power reserve is great, too. 😉

Adult life mostly consists of exclaiming “christ, that happened ten years ago!” about a variety of different events until you die.

@gruber @jamesthomson Synchronicity.

I think I sent this to you when it came up on Hodinkee, but in case I didn't, Christian Gafner has re-introduced the MIH watch, with small (but nice) changes, as the Mechanik2: https://mechanik2.com/

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@gruber I was just thinking that the last time I saw you in person was at C4[1] in 2007, and @jamesthomson even further back at WWDC...2006?

Gah. I'll be out back digging my own grave.

PCalc for iOS is 15 years old today, which does not seem possible. As the Mac version is just over 30 years old, that also means at some point very very soon, the iOS version will have been around for more than half of PCalc's entire existence.

If you bought it on day one, I hope you have appreciated the one and a half decades of free updates, and I shall direct you to the tip jar 😉

The About screen for PCalc 1.0.2, which is a lot less exciting that today’s.
The settings section, which isn’t actually very different, aside from the retro iOS theme.
The vertical layout for PCalc 1.0 for iOS, with a very different button layout.

I tried the Photoshop beta’s new generative AI stuff, and the first two results it returned for "a hand” do not inspire confidence.

A hand with four fingers.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@jamesthomson James, you know you need to be more specific in your prompts. “Norman Human Hand With Four Fingers, a Thumb, and Not at All Frightening” should do it.

You might want to add “Please” in there somewhere.

Dropped by Bluesky for the first time in a while. I'm a Fediperson but still have sympathy with what they're trying to do, and the tone seems to have stabilized for the moment.

Anyhow, I have 30 invites that I haven't thought about in a while, so, giving them away. Reply to this post if you want one. In case that's more than 30 people I will invent totally arbitrary and questionably fair criteria for handing them out.

Maybe stop if there are already a huge number of replies.

Fuck it, my mentions are going to be garbage anyway. For everyone decrying what Gmail did to email, let me remind you that no major free webmail service supported IMAP before Gmail did in 2007. The reason we all get to enjoy push email on our phones and don't have to pay BlackBerry to get it is b/c of IMAP IDLE, which Google forced everyone else to adopt. EEE often leads to better software for everyone and also usually backfires on the company trying to do the EEE.

@paul Also idea: a button that allows you to reach out and slap designers who put tiny serial numbers printed in grey-on-grey text so as to not interfere with the product's appearance (typically on the back).

Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can

The opening track (Devil's Spoke) on this solid album feels a bit like a gloss on KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", but also rock-influenced folk music in general.

It's a winning formula for her, and another extremely good LP.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@tldr Ah, non-LP track I haven't heard! I see there's a live version on the deluxe version of "A Creature..." and what looks like the single b/w The Needle and the Damage Done...

XTC - Go2

XTC slumped on their 2nd album. Whether because they were on the road and needed material, or because it was hard to have two Dick-tators in one band (Partridge and Andrews), it’s not clear.

This has some good songs (Moulding is learning how to write, “Are You Receiving Me?” Is great Partridge), but the two Andrews songs aren’t…and “My Weapon”, well, geez.

A shake-up was due, and happened…

This is the new remaster, including the dub Go+.

Duran Duran - Duran Duran

I forgot how much this LP roars out of the gate, embracing a straight ahead disco beat. And goes right into Girls on Film, with its big descending minor hook.

This is a big sounding production, with drums slamming bass notes popping, synths washing and guitars stinging.

Great example of how a 2-sided LP can benefit; the first side is more commercial and the second is more experimental.

Anyway - if it’s been a while, given a listen.

Madison Cunningham - Revealer

I think I found this through an interview with either Daniel Ash or David J from Love & Rockets. But wherever it was, it was a great recommendation. It has a little bit of an Aimee Mann + Jon Brion feel to it.

Great guitar playing, songwriting, solid band. Thumbs solidly up.
