In 2018, The Method Makers posted an interview with Paul Escolar, a fantastic artist and extremely influential player from the Bay Area. In 2021, the article was deleted during a big update to TMM's site. A few months later, Paul passed away.

I reached out to The Method Makers about the interview and they kindly dug up the old email interview. With their permission I've posted it here https://doctorpopular.com/the-method-makers-interview-with-paul-escolar/

Paul was a legend and I'm really glad we were able to archive this.

Sat next to one of those stupid big imported US tanks at a traffic light earlier. Had a fleeting thought that the roof of my Mini was about the same height as its bonnet.

And yeah, it was.

Those things are ridiculous.

docpop,

@DJDarren @notjustbikes we have 3 big white trucks like this that regularly park on our block. It seems like these would be extremely impractical for keeping in a dense city like SF, but folks keep buying them.

A large white pickup truck pulled up against a small white compact car. The hood of the pick up truck is almost the the height as the top of the compact car.

It occurs to me that I rarely share the final results here. Here are some recent episodes:

-A lively discussion about the AT Protocol vs ActivityPub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfzWTKaammQ

The city installed barriers on Capp St as a drastic step to deter sex workers. The concrete barriers are being upgraded to steel bollards today. The same sort of bollards we've been needing to protect pedestrians on Slow Streets or along bike lanes. Why is Capp St the only place that gets to have safe streets?

I've written 4 emails in the past 4 years to Supervisor Ronen asking for slow streets barriers & protected bike lanes, but never got a single reply.

The new bollards in front of the older concrete barriers on Capp St.
Another view of the steel bollards on Capp St. There are 8 of them spread out across the street near the crosswalk.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@n3wjack Capp St became a spot where people cruised looking for sex workers at night. The barriers make it harder for John's to drive down, so the sex workers have moved to nearby streets. They are gone from Capp for now.

Unrelated, Capp was also frequently used as a way to avoid the stop lights on South Van Ness. So it became common to see high-speed cars blasting through stop signs during the day. It was scary. These anti-SW barriers have been far more beneficial in slowing traffic.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@luis_in_brief @scott it's funny, but if the city called them a Slow Street, the neighbors would probably demand they get removed.

Capp St used to be awfully scary to bike on (or even when crossing at crosswalks). These anti-SW bollards have made it much more enjoyable to be on. I'm glad they are there.

I wish we could figure out how to get something to similar installed in a east-west direction. We have a few safe North-South routes, but hardly any safe routes from Dolores to Portrero.

Who needs a spare tire? The Fiat 500 Z-Eco comes with a spare bicycle. Designed by Zagato in 1992, this concept-car is essentially a modified version of the Fiat Cinquecento. The idea behind it was that drivers switch to their bikes once they arrived in the city, making it easier to navigate through the streets.

The same concept car, but scene from the front. This car is about as wide as a normal car, but driver area on the left side is the only part that is enclosed. The passenger side of the car is mostly removed, and has been replaced with a dock for a bicycle. A nice white bike with leather saddlebags is being carried in by the car in this photo.

The construction of the center-running bike lanes on Valencia St has begun and cars are already using it as free parking. Who could have possibly predicted this?

We need protected bike lanes, but the city gave us a few new lines of paint and some soft-posts instead.

It does this by watching them before you do.

Hey neighbors, have you ever heard of San Francisco Busflow? It's a regional handstyle best recognized by its rounded typography, continuous lines, and loopy letters (especially in the Ks, Ms, and Rs).

Once you start looking, you'll notice that Bus Flow dominates the landscape in #SanFrancisco and the #BayArea. This regional style is even becoming popular around the world #graffiti

Some public architecture covered with multiple tags from graffiti artists. Different media is used, but the names all have a similar cursive style.
Another wall covered in tags in the San Francisco Bus Flow style. Many of the tags are unreadable, but you can notice certain letters like "R"s that stand out because of the big loops that have been added.

    There's no Mastodon slump.

Sign-ups continue to increase -- albeit, not at the same rate as in November -- November was a spike.

While Monthly Average Users (MAUs) decreased since November, it's increased again this month (according to @Gargron).

But what's more interesting is that Half Year Average Users (HYAUs) is at a peak.

And we're very close to breaking 1 billion posts per month!

    See chart.

@atomicpoet tech media wants to keep writing about VC backed platforms because financing is more interesting to write about. It's why the Verge keeps writing fluff pieces like this for companies that offer no actual value https://www.theverge.com/23696466/bitcoin-crypto-lightning-network-lightspark-ceo-david-marcus

They'd rather keep writing about multi-million dollar startups because writing about contributor days and successful open source projects isn't going to drive the same pageviews.

Before I share any URLs with friends, I manually remove any UTM codes/tracking data and replace them with "=butts".

This has been a time consuming process in the past, but not anymore!!!!

BUTTER is a new Chrome extension that cleans any unwanted code from a URL before you share it... and replaces that code with "butts".

Use it for the lulz. Use it for your privacy. Use it to make the web a weirder place!

I'm going to do some more work on Butter over the next week and looking for feedback from Chrome users on the current plugin. After I get that tweaked, I'll start figuring out how to bring Butter to Safari and Firefox.

You can download Butter, the free extension that replaces UTM tracking codes with the word "butts", here butterurls.com/

You can also peak at it on github here github.com/docpop/Butter
