Everyone's focusing so much on the storage/technology costs around the , but no one's talking about the personnel costs.

You have to pay engineers to keep this stuff running. Even if it's static content in the cloud, there's still infrastructure and a company to run around it.

$38k for 100 years sounds pretty cheap to me when you consider the costs to maintain continuity and staff for a business over that time.

dragnucs,
@dragnucs@touha.me avatar

@ramsey Ain't a 100 people a bit too much? Could be just 15-30 to maintain infrastructure and keep everything runniong.

@lednabwm Not to debate religion, but determining right from wrong is not always easy.
For example, is Universal Basic Income right or wrong. What about debt interest payment?

Several years in the making, GitLab is now very actively implementing #ActivityPub! 🙌

https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/11247

The end-goal is to support AP for merge requests (aka pull requests), meaning git.alice.dev can send a merge request to gitlab.com/Bob/project.git

First bite-sized todo on the implementation path there is ‘subscribe to project releases’.

Smart move by #GitLab; through ActivityPub they’re getting a distributed version of GitHub’s social layer.

In some ways, I would quite like to self-host my own Mastodon server (I self-host my websites and email, as well as some other services). I'd need to find a PHP implementation of the server software though as I have no desire to run Ruby on Rails / Node.js (I find them a nightmare to deploy and I don't know enough to keep them secure).

dragnucs,
@dragnucs@touha.me avatar

@pwaring you can host as an alternative to Mastodon.

The @pixelfed Groups feature has been ready but unshipped for over 2 years now

I will be shipping the Groups beta ASAP (without federation initially) and will work out federation and UI improvements along with community feedback afterwards.

    Once again, I am looking at Emacs with puppy-dog eyes.

    And the worst part is: I know where this is going. I'll try using it for couple of weeks until, in a fit of rage, I will Ctrl-X Ctrl-C out of it and go back to vim in disgust.

    dragnucs,
    @dragnucs@touha.me avatar

    @ParadeGrotesque @aral Vim is good, but how is chaging modes when editing text?

    dragnucs,
    @dragnucs@touha.me avatar

    @ParadeGrotesque @aral Like how do you add text, move around, add more text, do some power move text deletion or transformation, then add some more text? That is easly 6 modes or am I missing something?

    dragnucs,
    @dragnucs@touha.me avatar

    @ParadeGrotesque My question was, when doing heavy text editing, like in programming, where we manipulate text, not only write long sentences, we need to switch between modes to either do some commandes or insert text. So is it normal for people to keep switching between modes that induce additional keystrokes and mental modes as well, or is there a better way?

    dragnucs,
    @dragnucs@touha.me avatar

    @aral @ParadeGrotesque this feels halfway between emqcs and vi editing where you use commands to navigate then enter text when needed without changing modes.

    In vim, to copy text, I find it very hard if I am typing text. We need to change to modal with ESC then to visual with V, select the text, Copy it with Y, navigate to destination, change to insert mode with I make room, change back to modal ESC, then paste with P.

    As I'm importing my cloud cluster into I want to look at a new ingress. Looking for something very lightweight, runs on both ARM64 and AMD64 so it can run on my cloud and home clusters for simpler management, and is easy to manage (the less work the better). What is everyone using?

    dragnucs,

    @wyri With recent events and since you are importing anyways, you may want to consider instead of terraform.
