The Linux Upskill Challenge is a free month-long course maintained by @livialima focused on "Learn[ing] the skills required to sysadmin a remote Linux server from the commandline".
Debian GNU/Linux has the concept of "pure blends". These are not forks of the Debian distribution, but rather curated collections of Debian packages dedicated to a specific purpose or task. One of these pure blends is Debian Astro. Its purpose is to meet the requirements of both professional and hobby astronomers. It integrates a large number of software packages covering telescope control, data reduction, presentation and other fields: https://blends.debian.org/astro/
For a Linux user to try out a BSD is to reap the great benefit of traveling to a foreign country: you not only learn new things, but you also see old things in a new light.
When I decided to install #FreeBSD and stick with it for 30 days, I was motivated by simple curiosity and a question: After years of using Linux, what was this entire parallel *nix universe of BSDs?
FBSD has proven educational and a real treat to use and to continue using.
I've come to appreciate the history of Unix and how these wonderful tools came about, and the community that keeps it going. Thanks to many of YOU for your comments and encouragement.
"It’s kind of an open-source victory, because we’re flying an open-source operating system and an open-source flight software framework and flying commercial parts that you can buy off the shelf if you wanted to do this yourself someday." — NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) senior engineer Tim Canham on #Mars Ingenuity Helicopter #FOSS#space, Source: https://spectrum.ieee.org/nasa-designed-perseverance-helicopter-rover-fly-autonomously-mars
Inspired by the example set by @JustineSmithies I'm closing out the year with a Void install on ZFS-Root + native encryption + ZFSBootMenu. :void: :linux:
After making the switch from Xorg + Openbox --> Wayland + Sway and a few weeks of use I find myself liking it very much!
Sway quickly gets you 90% towards a usable desktop. Its that 10% where you're replacing all your X11 tools and crafting your own desktop just the way you like it that takes some experimenting!
Debian 12 aka "Bookworm" has been released. Congratulations and a big "thank-you" to all the contributors for their hard work to make this day possible!
Purchased a Google Pixel 6a phone specifically to install GrapheneOS. The web installer/instructions for Linux (Debian) worked like a charm: https://grapheneos.org/install/web
Installed Openbox and accessories and startx into the window manager is working.
Dynamic menu launcher rofi fails with message "Failed to set locale." I have ~/.login_conf configured with en_CA.UTF-8 and running locale confirms this. Hmmm ...
Next up: Configure fonts, sound, and fix all the little paper cut issues like non-working rofi.
@glynmoody Your articles and especially "Rebel Code" introduced me to Linux and this whole idea of Libre/Open Source. Thanks for providing the new book as a downloadable DRM-free epub. Looking forward to reading!
One feature I've come to love in the foot terminal: press ctrl+shift+o to enter URL mode, where all currently visible URLs are tagged with a label using a letter key that will open the URL in Firefox.
@JustineSmithies I use PARTLABEL to identify the swap partition in /etc/crypttab which then gets mapped to /dev/mapper/swap as a swap partition that can be added in /etc/fstab like a normal swap.
