I'm investigating the setting up of a small community for my local hiking group. A place we can share photos, arrange meets, discuss trips etc. Anybody got any suggestions or recommendations of what platform on the might suit?

As it's 35°- 40°+ here now over the next week (and possibly until mid-August), it's time for my own "summer of coding" to start. Our company website badly needs a long overdue overhaul, so I plan to introduce dark mode, simplified navigation, less "clutter" & revised galleries amongst other things. Using @eleventy, Tailwind and Shoelace.

I'm hoping too that the calf injury will allow me to get some light hiking again (above 2000m+) soon.

Yesterday I used Organic Maps app on my phone as an aid to navigation. Worked really well, the maps are detailed enough for hiking without being clustered.

Biggest win for me was using completely offline, just location on. This meant I hardly used much battery in the 6 hours of usage.

It's and based over Open Street Maps. I enjoyed it and got value out of it, so I donated to @organicmaps

Camp erected ready for the night. Beyond are the snows of the Sierra Nevada. Hoping we get a good sunset and sunrise.

I wrote a blog about our hike yesterday.

"Underestimating difficulties on the Buitreras". Describes a very tough and tiring but ultimately exciting and enjoyable romp around Las Buitreras del Durcal.

It's 37C outside. You are in the midst of a fierce spanish summer. Either "head for the hills" or as we did today, head to some dramatic local gorges and refreshing, cooling waters. Marvellous!

Had a great day yesterday with a group of returning friends from Northern Ireland. Intent on doing Stage 7 of the "Gran Senda de Málaga" from Canillas de Aceituno to Cómpeta, but bailed out at Salares due to the heat.

Loved the sign that warned "You have to be really fit and an expert in extreme trekking tough paths with difficult slopes and dangers as to fell into the abyss"

I apologise if my timeline for the next week is filled with landscapes and scenes from the mountains of the Picos de Europa. I have only just been able to get the images off camera (I know, I'm a bit old school that way!).

The mountains here completely blew me away! Anyway, here's a sample from the week to come. Dramatic peaks, cloud inversions, narrow gorges and beautiful alpine meadows.

The village of Sotres sits on a lovely alpine meadow to the right. To the left are forests of tress while behind rises high grey mountains
A mountain refuge appears out of the cloud. Above the cloud and illuminated by the morning sun rises a high mountain
A narrow mountain track cuts across from the left, with lots of green shrubbery. A deep gorge lies to the right in shadow

Sampled the delights of the new Via Ferrata at Cadiar today. A grade K3 and a grade K4 available. Wire bridge, tyrolean, pendulum and some steep, airy ladders perched in space. All very entertaining.

Yesterday we hiked the Ruta Gollizno at Moclin. A beautiful descent into a dramatic gorge with rope bridges and a heavily vegetated (cool!) river valley, followed by a tough ascent in the afternoon heat back up to the town. The cold beers afterwards were most welcome!

A narrow bridge spans a gorge with overhanging rock walls to the right and a green forest further to the left
A steep sided rocky valley is to the left. Coming down from the right is a narrow hiking path with some hikers

Being interested in photography means I don't have a lot of images of myself. That's normal eh? Here's a brilliant one of yours truly though, taken a few days ago by expert @chriswright. Thanks Chris.

I did get a touch of vertigo stood there as the drop the other side was immense 😱

Picos de Europa day 3 - Refugio Cabaña Verónica and Torre de Horcados Rojos

We used the cable car from Fuente Dé for access to the high mountains. A spectacular hike to the remarkable Refugio Cabaña Verónica, perched precariously on a rocky ridge. Then a loose scramble up from a col to the fine summit off the Torre de Horcados Rojos (2503m), seemingly overlooking the world!

The route up to the Cabaña Verónica rises through stonet and rocky ground with vertical cliffs on the right hand side

My first overnight trip into the Sierra Nevada mountains since the Pacemaker implant starts tomorrow. Just one night camping by a remote lake. Haven't packed yet but target base weight is 5kg, water and food taking the overall backpack weight to under 8kg🤞 Looking forward to a night in the mountains

Like a scene from "Lord of the Rings", today we enjoyed the spectacular delights of the Gargantua de Cares gorge in the Picos de Europa. We missed breakfast and set off in the dark to catch the morning sun entering the gorge. Turned into a very warm hike which later needed copious amounts of cold beer in compensation.

Thanks to my mate Felipe for persuading me to rock climb after an absence of about 10 years! We did the marvellous 5 pitch Espolon Cerro del Toro outside Motril.

I felt really comfortable apart from the last 4+ slab which stretched my ageing (has-been) ability to it's maximum in my scrambling approach boots. Rock slippers would have been much easier. A nice 60m abseil to finish.

Brought back a lot of happy memories today & proved that there is still life in the old dog 🤣

Spring Gentian (Gentiana sierrae). Endemic to Spain's Sierra Nevada grows between 1800m and 3200m. Lucky enough to see loads of these beautiful flowers today in a high valley at 2300m

Interesting day yesterday doing a via ferrata whilst being filmed by the BBC as part of an upcoming TV series. Not allowed to mention details but it was great to see how professional film crews set up to capture such things. One thing that struck me ... "Aren't all the film crew (4 cameramen, producer, sound man, director, fixer etc) so young? Or is it that I am just so old 😀 Anyway, a lot of fun!
