I apologise if my timeline for the next week is filled with landscapes and scenes from the mountains of the Picos de Europa. I have only just been able to get the images off camera (I know, I'm a bit old school that way!).

The mountains here completely blew me away! Anyway, here's a sample from the week to come. Dramatic peaks, cloud inversions, narrow gorges and beautiful alpine meadows.

The village of Sotres sits on a lovely alpine meadow to the right. To the left are forests of tress while behind rises high grey mountains
A mountain refuge appears out of the cloud. Above the cloud and illuminated by the morning sun rises a high mountain
A narrow mountain track cuts across from the left, with lots of green shrubbery. A deep gorge lies to the right in shadow

Images from the last 2 days trip to visit "Lake with No Name" at 2900m altitude! A magical, serene place where nature ruled. Humans don't often visit here, if ever.

My head is filled with images and experiences from this trip, the stars overhead, the tumbling waters, the stillness, the Ibex and even the mid-morning break to make a cup of tea! Here are just a few digital ones from a mind blowing overnight camp.

For 10+ years I've survived without Microsoft and Apple. Now it's time to de-Google and de-Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) my life and head for the hills

One of the scenes that remains very close to my heart. The road leading to town of El Chalten and the Fitzroy (Chalten) and Cerro Torre mountain chain, Patagonia. I have had some wonderful times here over the years.

It's 37C outside. You are in the midst of a fierce spanish summer. Either "head for the hills" or as we did today, head to some dramatic local gorges and refreshing, cooling waters. Marvellous!

Rio Santos, Albuñuelas.

Picos de Europa - day 5

Spectacular morning departure from the Refugio Jermoso with cloud inversion until this all cleared at the Las Colladinas. Then it was a rough descent to the green, lush valley of the Vega de Liordes before bad weather arrived. Beautiful views of surrounding mountain summits. We past some ancient mines before descending steep zig-zags back to Fuente Dé. How on earth did they make that incredible path?

The peak of Torre de las Minas de Carbón 2483m rises like a huge pyramid into the sky, clad in gray and orange stone. In the foreground the silhouette of two hikers
Some clouds gather in the west, blow is a small lake nestled between crags. To the right in shadow are a small group of hikers making their way along a narrow mountain track
The start of the very steep descent to Fuente Dé. Bad weather dark cloud gather to the right. The green fields of Fuente De can be see below

Sad to hear of Shane's passing. Some lyrics from one of my favs

[Pre-Chorus]
We walked him to the station in the rain
We kissed him as we put him on the train
And we sang him a song of times long gone
Though we knew that we'd be seeing him again (Far away!)

[Chorus]
I'm sad to say I must be on my way
So buy me beer or whiskey, 'cause I'm going far away (Far away!)
I'd like to think of me returning when I can
To the greatest little boozer and to Sally MacLennane

And this is the beautifully situated Refugio Collado Jermoso in the Picos de Europa. A proper, "old school", refuge. Cosy, a bit cramped, but very friendly with great food and all at a really fair price. I loved my stay here so much I do feel impelled to write a blog post about mountain refuges. But ... that's for another day. If you ever get chance to stay here, just do it.

On the left is the Refugio Collado Jermoso, behind are dramatic steep mountains. In the foreground is a grassy expanse with two hikers approaching the hut

Day 1 we arrive at the place where we hope to see the rarest cat in the world, the Iberian Lynx. Immediately Mick spots a lynx. We pour excitedly out of the car, grabbing binoculars & cameras. 1st attempt at a photo fails because I've left lens cap on. 2nd fails as the camera settings all wrong. Managed to get photo just as the lynx ... is heading into a bushy area never to re-emerge. Doh! Anyway, here is a photo of the arse end of a lynx 🤣🤣🤣

Spring Gentian (Gentiana sierrae). Endemic to Spain's Sierra Nevada grows between 1800m and 3200m. Lucky enough to see loads of these beautiful flowers today in a high valley at 2300m

Being interested in photography means I don't have a lot of images of myself. That's normal eh? Here's a brilliant one of yours truly though, taken a few days ago by expert @chriswright. Thanks Chris.

I did get a touch of vertigo stood there as the drop the other side was immense 😱

Río Bacal, Jayena - Sendero de los Arrieros - Mirador de la Encina - Poza del Romance

Brilliant hiking route over some new ground for me/us. Incredible that so much varied and interesting walking terrain is available within an hours drive of home near Granada. Must have done over 100 routes so far.

Here's some photos from the "non-river" part of yesterday trip (see previous post)

A group of hikers ascends a path amongst shrub land. In the distance the snow covered mountains of the Sierra Nevada
A man stands with his dog next to a tree. In the distance rise some mountain and hills

Overnight Camp - post 3/3

As light dawned on a very cold and windy morning we hurriedly packed up our tent and waited in the lieu of some rocks for the sun to arrive. The cold wait was worthwhile as the morning sun started to touch the summits and quickly spread to the ridges. A magical time of day to be in the mountains.

The Puntal de la Caldera 3323m with morning sun reaching the summit
Ridges of rock and snow illuminated by the rising sun
Lines of light illuminate the lower hills stretching to Granada

Today we've been enjoying stunning views of the northern side of the Spanish Sierra Nevada above Güéjar Sierra. All the main 3000m+ peaks of the ridge clearly seen today, very little haze. The image shows the summits of Cerro los Machos and Veleta (3394m)

A few images from the Tajos Campanario ridge in Spain's Sierra Nevada today. Some hard neve on sheltered slopes made for a great crampon ascent. By the time we came to the steep descent gully the snow had softened a touch to give a quick descent to the upper San Juan valley. Memorable views throughout.

A group of mountaineering at the bottom of the image contemplate their way along the the snowy ridge ahead. Some big drops and high mountains to the left
Four mountaineers dressed in colorful clothing make their way across some snow. Ahead lies a ridge leading to a jagged mountain

A couple of telephoto shots of the northern side of Spain's Sierra Nevada yesterday. Still, not much snow but this is steep, dramatic, alpine terrain with 27 peaks over 3000 metres. Photos show the peaks of Mulhacen (3482m) and Veleta (3394m)
