Not a lot to say about myself. Worked as GP in valleys, then public health something to do with data of health events. Ignored mainly, you're advised to do the same. Meanwhile if you fancy seeing what I'm thinking this is quite a good place happy to be corrected as I don't know as much as I think I do. It's a common male fault. 🤣

People lie about infections and . Very disappointing STUDY:

"About 75% reported concealing illness in interpersonal interactions, possibly placing others in harm’s way. Concealment motives were largely social (e.g., wanting to attend events like parties) and achievement oriented (e.g., completing work objectives). Disease concealment appears to be a widely prevalent behavior by which concealers trade off risks to others in favor of their own goals."

@augieray be interesting to know if their employer pays for them to stay home if unwell! If not then rich people are encouraging for profit motive the concealment of infectious illness. Colds, D&V, as well as the classic Communicable diseases are spread person to person.
Even in UK many parents can't stay home if children are ill, as their work counts up the days off, and then sacks them, once a threshold passed. It even happens in the NHS.

This passage from @debcha's "How Infrastructure works" is such a truth that often gets forgotten or ignored on the hunt for profit. It's a very familiar and recurring theme in resilience engineering texts and research. And it also rings true for me in this current trend of continuous layoffs that take more and more slack and capacity out of tech systems being maintained (in addition to the human cost) as remaining humans need to do more work in the same amount of time.

epistatacadam,
@epistatacadam@toot.wales avatar

@debcha @Tallish_Tom @mrtazz for those not aware of Cook's work he was an anaesthetist, and was drawing on his experiences in healthcare. Basically despite everything improviement methodology advocates say, health and other human systems aren't factories, so drawing lessons from production line optimization is fraught, and may have adverse consequences on patient/user/customer outcomes.

@kcarruthers not sure in practice the ExDGs effort had any effect.
Though there is a tagline, that they refuse to disclose their funding, there is no discussion as to why they are so secretive. Further, they still seem to pop up as frequently as before, and they are rarely challenged as much as their openents are, IMHO.
Perhaps the influence of the current board +/- DG is being felt by directors and editors?

@NormanDunbar Didn't mean it was just ITV. The whole MSM, is Private Eye and Computer Weekly main stream?, have served us the population well, unlike the legal and political system. Also: FFS make vaccinations mandatory again!

epistatacadam,
@epistatacadam@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 immunisation was only mandatory for a short while and for smallpox. Rvidence shows that in GB uptake improved when voluntary, and strongly supported by Health Visitors, District Nurses, and GPs. Funnily enough those groups have all been decimated to save hospital output. Result is increased demand on hospitals and reduced immunisation, so increased outbreaks.
We need to invest in primary care services (mostly staff, perhaps by recognising market forces & pay them more; as with CEOs!)

@fkamiah17 no mention of the unjustified killing of Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank, and the murderous actions of "settlers"! epistatacadam,
@epistatacadam@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 deliberate obscuration of the issue. No one doubts that what was done on Oct 7 was a crime. Though apparently some of the deaths were the result of IDF fire or carelessness. The punishment of those involved is not a crime. But how was it a capital offence for 10,000 children, who weren't involved? An eye for an eye but not one bit more is my reading of Jewish law, though I'm not of that race.

epistatacadam,
@epistatacadam@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 agreed, though if Israel engaged with ICJ and by implication ICC, presumably it agrees to abide by any ruling it gives, including perhaps surrendering any individuals named by ICJ to be tried in ICC for crimes it appears they have committed.
Now that would be progress, though considering who that would entail, it's unlikely to happen.

epistatacadam,
@epistatacadam@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 you're right of course, but the failure to comply to ICC would be a problem for senior and those unimportant to Israeli gov, as presumably arrest warrants could be issued and most countries accept them. So travel severely limited.

Listening to Idris Elba being questioned on how to fund youth services, on @BBCRadio4 . He overlooked as did his questioner, that HMG has announced it is going to cut taxes for the rich (and has relaxed bonus caps for the best paid, whilst cutting low pay & benefits). Perhaps, the billions to be spent on the rich, could be invested in children instead. That is much more likely to result in improvement in Britain than giving people with too much money, even more.

A small but significant global movement is seeking to make free to use as a central plank to urbanism.

as the Guardian point out:

'Flourishing & accessible public transport systems are an essential feature of sustainable 21st-century living. They are a means of social inclusion & wellbeing, helping to generate a sense of place and collective belonging'!

Being free from fares can be a big part of this... but in the UK we're wedded to an altogether different model!
