@azonenberg no it has all orbit data after 30sec with a good antenna. You can tell because it is tracking many sats.

Instead it's in survey-in, it gets an accurate fix by averaging all sat positions for a long time, so it can assume a static receiver and compute an increased accuracy time-only solution. It will monitor the orbits for many hours. Dont move the antenna!

@azonenberg iirc you can get a full fix in 30 sec after cold start. If it takes longer is because reception quality is less than ideal.

"Off for a long time" starts at a few minutes and has no further degradation. It's just a state with unknown orbits.

You made me want to confirm all this, so i'll read a bit to confirm how it works.

Paper is engineering oriented, not theoretical, so it's very understandable.

Have a look at the voltage/current/timing requirements for these magnets.

Of course the superconducting dipoles are cool.

But these ones are impedance controlled, powered by pulse forming networks, have a current ramp of 13000A per MICROsecond, are considered slow if they reach full current in a microsecond.

@gsuberland I think we dont really realize how fast a nanosecond is (I know I dont), so this conversion does not make justice to the insane amount that is 13 mega fucking ampere per millisecond, or 13kA/us.

Same for 13 giga ampere per second. It's almost impossible to grasp, we have no comparison point for giga-amperes.

Most intense lightning strikes were clocked at 10kA and last a few tens of microseconds, so hmm, almost comparably insane. Because thats per bunch.

Oh, and what would the Amiga be without this chip? The mighty Motorola 68000. A massive DIP64 package. None of that puny 8086 crap that Intel made! With a little bit of squinting you could even think that it‘s a 32 bit processor. Of course nowadays Motorola lives a life rather in the limelight, under the name of Freescale.
