Me a few years ago: "I don't like vegan food"

Me now: "I don't like vegan versions of food I already dislike (bland, raw, salady, health food things)"

I've found exceptional and flavorful vegan Mexican food that I love!

"Hijo de su Madre" in LA, "Om Sabor" in SF

Basically I like thoughtful vegan versions of cuisines I already like, and I will always stay away from 'health food' things even though sometimes the overlap drives me nuts (I really dislike health food and culty woo woo things)

fadersolo,

@skinnylatte LOL! This is all so funny. I actually love a lot of vegan “health food”, but maybe that’s because I was born and raised in culty woo woo Bay Area. Om Sabor is tops tho!

I’ve been vegan for more than half my life and the main thing I hate about it is loud preachy vegans giving us all a bad reputation by forcing everyone to feel bad about what they eat.

I’m so inspired after seeing “One Found Sound” perform at Cafe Du Nord tonight. This orchestra is just too damned talented! Here’s a snippet of ’s 3rd Symphony. It’s such a privilege to hear a well played masterpiece in such a casual and welcoming venue!

An orchestra made up of about 30 people performing at the Swedish American Music Hall in San Francisco

I love this spicy take on Rick Rubin from Jacob Collier:
“Rick says things like ‘art is only pure if it’s made for only art’s sake’. Absolutely false.”

Thank you for saying it out loud! I hate collaborating with people when they get all precious and start spouting this nonsense. Rick’s cool AF, but his ideas on creativity are nothing more than fun theories. They aren’t rules at all, they don’t apply to every project, and you can definitely ignore them.

@daringfireball This take is such a let down. There are so many reasons folks can’t afford to pay $$ to avoid tracking, but also can’t afford to miss out on social media. When people I know take breaks from social media they stop being invited to social gatherings, they lose contact with family members, they lose access to job opportunities. It’d be great if the whole world would quit Meta, but that’s just not happening.

    @mxtthxw @hilljam @elsemusic My partner just replaced Sonarworks with this at our studio:

    https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/arcstudio/

    After being thoroughly impressed I signed up to review this for the next issue of Tape Op. I don’t have a fully formed opinion yet, but my initial reaction is that it’s an easy setup, sounds great and is way less quirky than the fully software based Sonarworks solution.

    fadersolo,
    @fadersolo@sfba.social avatar

    @hilljam @mxtthxw @elsemusic Yes, but you can probably skip the Auratones and the boombox or put it between your DAW’s output and your monitor controller. It is an extra AD/DA trip, but it’s affordable, just works, and so far doesn’t confuse my mac like Sonarworks sometimes does. It’s like an affordable Trinnov.

    fadersolo,
    @fadersolo@sfba.social avatar

    @elsemusic @hilljam @mxtthxw TBH, I have less experience with Sonarworks. My partner’s have been running it on our 2018 i7 for years but seem to complain about it being flaky. Our setup is stupidly complicated tho: HDX card on the Mac communicating with interfaces (mostly a BURL) over Soundgrid. It all sounds great, but there are so many layers for failure.

    I have been using my own machine since long before they installed Sonarworks and never bothered to install it after their anecdotes scared me off. My favorite thing about the Arc so far: once it’s configured it works no matter which computer is running and I have yet to install the software.

    fadersolo,
    @fadersolo@sfba.social avatar

    @hilljam @elsemusic @mxtthxw I mean, it sounds like you’re describing the feature set of DADMan / Trinnov / etc. Those are currently selling for 10x the price of this little box. It does sounds like a killer design and I hope every audio interface is going to have a “monitor controller with room EQ” feature set built in within a couple years. Why wouldn’t they?! So maybe just wait for that. For now, I see this IK Arc box as something affordable for those of us in the middle.

    With the Arc, it’s super fast to switch EQ curves. It wouldn’t be hard to shoot a curve for each speaker set and switch settings every time we switch monitors: our main issue is a 6 dB dip at 40Hz, which is well below the 100 Hz cut off for our only alt (which are NS-10s). Do you run Sonarworks after your monitor controller, switch the EQ curve for every speaker set, or just share one curve across everything?

    Portrait of Illinois Jacquet, New York, N.Y., ca. May 1947

    The image is a black and white photograph capturing three jazz musicians in what appears to be a recording studio. In the foreground, there's an individual wearing a hat and holding a saxophone, with two others standing behind them; one on the left plays a double bass and the other on the right holds a trombone. The musician on the right is also holding a microphone to his mouth, indicating they may be performing or recording music.

    The text present in the image provides information about the subjects of the photograph: "Illinois Jacquet" is named as the lead saxophonist, and "New York, N.Y." indicates their location. The date "ca. May 1947" suggests that this photo was taken around that time, capturing a moment in the history of jazz music.

    The overall composition of the image places the musicians centrally, with each musician occupying their own space within the frame. Their attire and the style of the photograph suggest that it could have been taken during a period when formal attire was common for musicians, although without more context or an understanding of jazz music history, it is difficult to pinpoint their specific role within the genre or the significance of this particular moment in time.

    Am I the only one who thought Jay Z’s whole speech was cringe? Some real billionaire energy up there.

    He trash talked the whole organization, seemed confused between his daughter & wife (?!?), and implied she’s never won album of the album of the year of some decision made in a back room. That’s literally not how it works.

    Side note: Maybe if the Grammys adopted ranked choice Bey coulda won album of the year.

    I gotta say Avid has really been on the ball lately. Pro Tools has added so many great features the last couple of years and every time I'm worried about updating because of major changes, but it's all been remarkably stable for me.

    fadersolo,
    @fadersolo@sfba.social avatar

    @billyjoebowers I’ve had the same experience. I saw a lot of friends complaining about the new Atmos workflows, but they addressed the biggest gripe in this week’s point release. Avid does seem to be delivering lately. The December update even spread up bounces in Apple Silicon mode for me.

    Still, I’m hella cautious about saying any of this out loud. How long can this go on?

    Worked on the song for the client for 3 hours this afternoon. It's a company that produces Internet video ads. My contact there is an acquaintance of mine. A guy who does video graphics. If you're in Norway, you've probably seen his work in ads and on billboards.

    He took a chance on me and brought me in without asking. He said I'm helping him prove that a really good soundtrack can be commissioned from a freelancer in a very short time - something his colleagues said would be impossible.

    fadersolo,
    @fadersolo@sfba.social avatar

    @thor I don’t have a ton of experience with ad work, but the few gigs I’ve had taught me the importance of keeping your tracks flexible. Lean on soft synths as much as you can get away with! After the first round they will ask for changes and they may wanna hear those changes within 24 hours. Don’t be surprised if they ask you to change the tempo!

    The holidays always put us in the mood to enjoy a game with friends, which recently got us reminiscing about the work we did back in the day to bring the Coding Monkeys’ version of Carcassonne to iOS. From the menus to the gameboard we had a blast creating an immersive feel for the game. Sadly, their version isn’t available any more, but you can see some of the artwork below.

    If you’re a dev who wants a fun and immersive feel for your own app or game, email us at design@iconfactory.com!
