i’ve been following the news of the magma dike developing under Grindevík in the Reykjanes peninsula of Iceland

which has led to a bit of reading around about the geology and history of Iceland, eg, the Reykjanes peninsula is where the north atlantic ridge rises above sea level

pasted the latest volcano update from the icelandic met office into google translate and i thought it had had the LLM equivalent of a stroke: it was translating cubic metres of lava into milliletres of wastewater, and other wild fabulations

turns out google thought my paste was german, and was back to its usual levels of inaccuracy after i switched it to icelandic

TIL conical flasks are safety equipment!

when a reaction gets too energetic, a conical flask will blow its bottom out and drop the mess on the bench or the floor

instead of exploding in all directions
