More as my new hybrid heat pump hot water heater failed city inspection. Apparently the plumbers will have to redo the condensate drainage, as the plan of "empty the bucket" isn't going to cut it, it must go into a sewer drain or be piped outside.

fwaggle,
@fwaggle@moodoo.org avatar

@fedops @simplenomad Things like this do make sense when you realise that the heat pump could very well outlast you living there.

If you sell the house then the missing stair you don't care about becomes a problem for someone else, so it makes sense if you're replacing the staircase to ensure they're all there.

Honestly to me the annoying part would be the contractor not knowing the local code, and I'd be wondering what else they took a shortcut on.

Yesterday i replaced a SSD in one of my home servers. The amount of dust was terrible. A very thin and consistent layer of dust in all the insides. What tips can you share to attenuate dust inside our boxes?

fwaggle,
@fwaggle@moodoo.org avatar

@Prozak In my experience, unless you run them in a mostly-dust-free environment (ie no carpet, don't have pets, run them indoors, good filtration and air conditioning) you're basically doomed to have dust sooner or later.

I just run my shit in the garage and make peace with the fact that taking it offline for service is a 2x a year ordeal. 😭

Anyone have any idea what kind of cable this is? One end looks like SCSI. It has markings that say Belkin F2N984.

@sysop408 SCSI breakout cable for one of the models of Macintosh Powerbook.

It's probably with something to someone as those connectors are probably unobtanium.

    @decryption This raises so many questions... Like what's the difference between this and a boobytrap? You miss your shot and bounce the eye out of someone's head, I don't see how you avoid liability for it even if there were trespassing.

    This probably raises more issues for the legality of paintball in Australia anyway.

    And how the fuck does it keep the ammo fresh? If you leave paint in a marker for a week they turn to mush and won't fire properly.

    Who the fuck is this for?

    @decryption We regrettably used these certificates to put gas in a few years back. 🤡😭

    Ours was a choice of dispose of three resistance slab heaters and do gas ducted and it's free (plumbers probably made a tidy profit off it) or do heat pump and probably still be $15~20k out of pocket and we just didn't have it spare at the time. Now I'm bummed to be burning gas in winter (and the supply charge sucks arse in summer).

    Saw a handful of toots yesterday re: and the Streisand effect, had a chuckle but didn't think too much of it.

    But it dawned on me this morning that I didn't know Switch emulation was a thing, much less so capable of playing games where piracy was a concern, until they sued an emulator group. I can't imagine I'm the only one. Streisand effect for sure.

    Hey so I know US passports contain RFID chips… at some point I heard a claim that the passport covers are faraday cages so the RFID can't be sniffed unless the passport is open. But I can't find anything about that (the faraday cover thing) on Google. Is that true or did I get urban legended

    fwaggle,
    @fwaggle@moodoo.org avatar

    @mcc I was sceptical but I just tested it and I'll be fucked it seems like it works?

    My Australian passport, with an RFID scanner app on my phone, scans with it closed or open. US one, will not scan on the cover but scans immediately when open?

    If you do it just right it looks great, and still looks great in twenty years.

    @dawnstar @decryption Ours is fantastic, given that the weather here can literally turn to shit in the time it takes the washing machine to do it's thing.

    No more guessing if it'll be a good day, and any days where it was definitely going to be a good day, it's free (emissions+ cost) anyway thanks to solar.

    Only regret is not doing it sooner and putting up with clothes horses everywhere, and the fact it dropped a bearing and had to go in for warranty repair for a couple weeks. 😬

    @ottaross @Dianora @AwattoAnalog For a model of this, Australia has phased out payphones but our primary network operator is still required to keep some number of them for universal access.

    They're free for standard calls (eg home VOIP, mobiles, and any residual landlines) within Australia, you only pay for international and toll calls. They also apparently do a free Wi-Fi service if you're near one, but I don't know how that works.
