Re: , https://apple.news/ABJ9BC6ZRQZqJPrAlQasm0w, I was “quiet cut” in 2018 when reassigned me to their security team. While I’m interested in subjects, I’ve been emphatically focused as a for almost 20 years and didn’t have the background, skills, aptitude, or drive in the new role.

For six miserable months, I came to work every day feeling like an impostor until I found a job at another company. Did they intend to get rid of me? Who knows.

geekruthie,

@mjgardner That's about the time I left there, I think--October/November '18. To me, it sounds like quiet cutting requires a lot more...well, intelligence and intention, frankly...than I would ever accuse Big Orange of possessing.

geekruthie,

@melsaywhat Couldn't be easier. Shred a whole head of cabbage and a whole red onion on a mandoline, and grate three large carrots. Toss with 1/2c each of salt and sugar, let sit for 10 min. Rinse, and run through salad spinner. Dressing is 3/4c mayo, 1/4c ACV, 1 tbsp black pepper, 2 tbsp dijon mustard, 3 tbsp sugar.

I'm looking at a software job at a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and I wonder what that means for the employees. Does anyone I know here work for a similar organization?

geekruthie,

@onelson I worked for libraries in IT for years and year. Even if you work for a for-profit company that supplies them with software, you're effectively working for a nonprofit, and your salary will reflect that. (Meaning, it's a damn good way to stay broke, until you wise up and leave.)

geekruthie,

@onelson Didn't say that was the main thing that pushed me out of working in nonprofits--I loved what I was doing, and knowing what it did for so many people was very rewarding. But you asked "what that means for the employees," and that's a big one.

Another thing I learned--get ready for some funky strange bureaucracy, unlike anything I've ever seen elsewhere. If you try to spend money, it's got to make a lot of sense to people who don't have much sense about what you do for them.

Many wonder how they’ll ever manage to put Trump in prison. What about his secret service? What about national security?

Legal experts respond that they already have special facilities for criminals who either need lots of security or are a threat to others. ‘

They’ll find a secure, isolated place for him. I’m sure they can work something out.

geekruthie,

@georgetakei It's called "ADX Florence," colloquially known as "Supermax." :)

Great big open-source projects

I was talking to a friend today, and suggested using for a community we're both in, instead of Slack. , you know, and open source, and actually has tools for enforcing standards of conduct. They asked, "Is there a server written in ?"

There is not. The reference implementation is in Python, and it's massive. Others have been written in Go and Rust and even C++. But there's no reason it shouldn't be doable in @Perl ...

geekruthie,

@redscroll @Perl @coachgowron FOR THE GLORY OF THE EMPIRE!

Seriously, though, I probably won't, at least not any time soon. But I write similar JSON-heavy services with Perl for a living, so why not?

geekruthie,

@sultmhoor @Perl Nice! I'm more of a Dancer2 girl, myself, but I admire your effort!

geekruthie,

@mjgardner @Perl @technostructures I would wonder how "rooms" in would translate; I'll look at how that gateway does it.

I am happy to walk you through this place, get you comfortable, be non-judgy about helping you, and help make this place your new home. I'm gonna call this If others want to help newbies, lets do it together!

We need to do more to make people feel welcome first, that's how you create a culture people want to be part of.

geekruthie,

@mjgardner @packy I got sent a couple of receipts via another vector already. This about someone with delusions of journalism reposting private conversations without permission, then wondering why their source is upset?

I'm not in that group, for a whole bunch of reasons (not the least of which, I'm not active on that part of the Blue F Site, and have no desire to be.)

One of the nicest things about my job is when that people respond to something I've photographed with "Wow that's so creepy/eerie/sad" it is perfectly acceptable to reply "thank you so much 😊"

geekruthie,

@AbandonedAmerica See, I don't see your work that way. I see it as an essay of sorts, into the impermanence of...well, everything. It's a very Buddhist thought, and I enjoy looking at your work very much.

@mjgardner It's all in the wrist. I'd definitely be reporting that, with the video evidence. Your tracking number will give them the link to ID the driver, and there you go.

    geekruthie,

@mjgardner I wouldn't open a claim so much as a customer-service report. (Hopefully) they don't want their drivers doing that.

world take note: coming soon, the formerly-dormant perl101.org is going to get a redesign and repurpose.

(Somehow, it still gets 600-1K hits per day. Don't ask me how.)

There's a new look, and in addition to content about actually learning how to use Perl that beginners will want to know, look for news of new releases from the Perl team and CPAN, community news, tips & tricks, occasional humor, and much more.

Look for the grand re-launch around 1 August.

Oh great, Grace Hopper -- the world's largest gathering of women and non-binary technologists -- is being held in Florida later this year. I can't imagine any way that might go badly...

    geekruthie,

@va2lam @kf @dan It's not a clear good vs evil thing, agreed. A friend of mine was at the Houston GHC a while back, and said, "yes, they celebrate diversity--but just this one axis, in practice. It's about getting more bougie young white cis-women into tech and keeping them involved."

...and as an old transwoman from a poor background, that told me everything I needed to know. I've never been, and likely never will.

I hope they manage to stay safe in Orlando, though, for reals.

Officers working for Gov. Greg Abbott’s border security initiative here in have been ordered to push small children and nursing babies back into the Rio Grande, reports Houston Chronicle. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas/article/border-trooper-migrants-wire-18205076.php

    geekruthie,

@w7voa The only thing surprising about this to me, is that anyone at all is surprised that Governor F-You-I-Got-Mine would do that. He is missing the gene that keeps the rest of us from kicking old ladies in the face all day. I'm glad to no longer be a Texan; it is my everlasting shame that I was born there and took 55 years to permanently leave.
