OK, UK types, it’s council elections day. When you go out to vote, remember that you need to take photo ID with you. Yes, it is bad that you have to do so because it harms people without IDs more than it helps stop basically-nonexistent “voting fraud”, and yes this is a flagrantly partisan measure to benefit the Tories, and yes it was put through Parliament with barely any discussion or opposition, but you still have to do it. Don’t take it out on polling station volunteers, either.

@sil If I turn up without ID, does that get counted? Am tempted to turn up without ID, then come back later with ID (because I do want to vote), in the hope of boosting the "didn't have photo ID" numbers as protest...

I wonder if it is even ethical to enlist affiliation to the university if my funding comes directly from a funding institute, I'm buying and using my own hardware and software (down to the HDMI cable and mouse), and the data is also coming directly from another organization. The coffee and food is also off my own pocket.

The only things they provide are electricity (computer, coffee), water (coffee), and internet.

I bought a used foot pedal for my Mac. It didn't have software for a Mac available and it does not show up as a keyboard or mouse. So I had to learn how to read usb input using python. Fun little yak shaving event. I have it plumbed up to turn speech to text on and off. Kinda fun.

@mikerspencer @Mehrad For me the teams linux app still mostly works (I think there's some graphics driver glitches) but the web version seems fine with firefox for me.

It feels like the endless debate about “are LLMs thinking” largely misses the point. A better question is “are LLMs useful?” And if they are, we should understand their strengths and weaknesses at different tasks.

Endless pontificating on the meaning of “intelligence” is fun though. I suggest pairing it with a good bourbon. But once you sober up, go build useful things with useful tools.
