I bet someone thought that selling on the most hated store on the PC realm, without physical copies, sold exclusively for current gen consoles on their exclusive storefronts, would never lead to unprofitability.

@darkghosthunter Another detail I'd add to this are the PC system requirements, which further limited the game's reach on top of the store exclusivity.

I really enjoyed Alan Wake and Control, but I couldn't run Alan Wake 2 with my hardware and I'm not about to upgrade for a single game (or even a few games).

Hmm. CostGames or CostlyGames for a short, distinct tag for commercial games, and GratisGames for noncommercial games?

I'd say Paid instead but that feels like it overlaps too much with Sponsored, and doesn't clearly indicate Commercial aspect that's meant.

Ngl, sometimes the "Sea of Thieves" community sucks pure and utter ass.

I get that it's a pirate game and part of the experience is pvp and robbing and killing each other.

BUT chasing an empty ship across the whole map, just to make others feel miserable and destroy their experience, goes too far, imo.

Those are the exact people who were whining about the implementation of the "Safer Seas" feature, complaining there would be less players in the open seas, then.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@KazuShuSora Yeah...I've never really understood the appeal of doing that. Part of the appeal of PvP is supposed to be a fight, not some drawn out hunt and execution, or griefing.

I don't know how those players don't get bored of those antics personally. Might as well just farm easy AI enemies with that approach.

I finally figured out why I don’t like the last Doom games. It’s not necessarily the lack of ammo but the glory kills slowing down gameplay. That took me a while to realize…

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@fallenhitokiri something kinda cool to check out while they're still easily accessible are SnapMap levels people made that didn't rely on or emphasize glory kills.

The SnapMap levels that did this and tuned things right had a much faster pacing to their gameplay that may feel closer to its predecessors.

I'd recommend some, but I honestly can't remember them off-hand. Sorry!

For anyone around that keeps a log as they play games, how do you go about it? Take notes during play, and/or after?

Written, or audio notes, to transcribe later?

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

It may seem simple, but if taking notes during play, the stop and start of it seems distracting, and it's not really viable with many online games.

So I'd guess for those writing about their experiences with games it's probably primarily reflective with few notes from during play depending on the games involved?

Tower Unite now has bumper cars!

If you've not heard of Tower Unite, it's a unique game made up of a multitude of games and mini-games that you can play online with others. It has a kart racer, a couple first-person shooter modes, a topdown zombie shooter, an asymmetrical dragon slayer game, minigolf, a Monkey ball-esque racer, and more.

Plus to wind down you can chill in your customizable condo space with friends.

It's weird and fun!

Posted about World of Padman before, but felt like posting about it again, this time with a video of gameplay.

If you like lighthearted games and arena shooters, it's well worth giving a look. Also I love the attention to detail on the first map in this video, putting jump pads on the mouse traps is so good.

@JulesTheModest Er...How do you mean? The Galaxy app has its issues, but I've not run into this one.

Biggest issue I ran into was years back trying to point it to my existing directory of GOG games from before Galaxy to get it to recognize them without reinstalling them, but eventually I just decided to reinstall whenever I felt like playing them again (and uninstall from old location).

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

It's decent enough to consider it, I'll give you that.

Something worth adding, I think:

I mainly play smaller games (like ≤ 10 GB, often below 5 GB at that), with few bigger ones in the mix, which is why I even considered this method.

Also back when GOG Galaxy was being introduced, GOG had fewer big games, I think. If not then it's that I lean towards smaller and older games in general.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

I agree, and strive to remain cognizant of how both game size and digital only games serve to widen the digital divide.

Appreciate your reply compelling me to elaborate, as without I see where it can read like, "why not redownload several 50+ GB games" which unfortunately is increasingly people's situation with games. 😟

Online scifi space game Starbase resumes development after an extended pause!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFmEXGaBSmk

For those unfamiliar, Starbase is an ambitious in-development online multiplayer game that has a mixture of first-person on-foot, and vehicular gameplay, with the ability to build ships and stations.

Awhile back its development was paused as the studio had to focus their resources on a different game, but now they're back to working on Starbase.

As much as I understand it mainly comes down to different preferences, I still find it difficult to understand what's involved in enjoying leveling progression systems in some games.

I wouldn't dwell on it so much except that it appears in so many games, and increasingly so. Plus my experiences with them have mostly been of frustration as they, ironically, halt my progression in various games.

Why would I want to stop following the story & exploring the world to do busywork?

Sometimes when I post something here from Bluesky I get a reply from someone that the link cannot be opened because he/she/they is/are not a member.

Not much I can do about that. I provide a link where those reading can find the content if so wished, but access is out of my hands.

@micchiato Can't remember at the moment, but if there's an indicator for limited visibility on the account's profile on Bluesky ya might keep an eye out for it

All the same, you're right, nothing you can do about it besides being aware of it

Kudos to @UNVofficial's site for linking over to World of Padman's site, otherwise I may not have come across it!

Also check out Unvanquished! It's another free game, but it's a mix of RTS and FPS gameplay, which sounds interesting to me.

World of Padman is a delightful freeware arena shooter with an impressive amount of work put into it! It's meant more for multiplayer, but the bots are pretty fun to play against too!

Such a goofy fun game, definitely suggest giving it a try!

Call it nostalgia, but the moment video games on consoles couldn't launch and be played as quickly as the machine could load them, they went astray.

Consoles were pretty much always proprietary computers, but the tradeoff was that they were dedicated to playing games, removing complexities to get you to playing ASAP.

Adding in online updates and license checks, and subscriptions for online play? You're getting closer to being any other device, or worse.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

Plus it does well to remember that part of how Nintendo brought back the console market from its downturn was its seal of quality across games for its system.

With online updates even on console games, any sort of quality assurance for being on a console might as well be tossed out. That undercuts what could still be a big selling point for consoles.

Classic convenience plus games Just Working™. But money and its momentum don't care about that.

gmr_leon, to Nintendo
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

Nintendo's biz & legal divisions basically don't want you sharing or handling their creative divisions' work in any capacity it seems like.

I wonder how much, if any, backlash their creatives are giving them internally over these actions. If I were them I'd be frustrated at how much they're stifling the discussion and enjoyment of my work, but that's just me.

Also for what it's worth, Sony and Microsoft aren't much better about this kind of thing.

They both don't want you to have much say over your games after you buy them. However they haven't been as aggressive with takedown notices...Yet.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

There's some speculation in the comments of the Garry's Mod news post that this may be a fake takedown request for Nintendo stuff.

Whether it is or not, the fact that it even appears slightly credible is a result of Nintendo's aggressive behavior.

What kinds of games might you recommend with deep worldbuilding and interaction that aren't RPGs?

I like worldbuilding and stories, and I like when they're mixed with the interactivity of games, so RPGs seem like they should be a natural fit. Problem is, I dislike the stat-heavy, grindy progression of many RPGs.

I enjoy point & click adventures and visual novels but they're often more limited in their interactions. What kinds of game might I be missing combining the two?

@games

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

I think I may have it wishlisted, so I'm definitely trying to keep an eye on it. Waiting till it's fully released so I don't feel compelled to play it more like pseudo-QA and enjoy it less though

Thanks for the suggestion!
