Came up in a discussion, and I think it's an important point: You don't need to write software to be mass marketable. It can be niche, weird and fun and as long as it speaks the common protocol, who gives a fuck if only you and some friends use it :)

We have an unhealthy obsession with naming things "sensibly" and making sure it's marketable.

Sod that, be fun with it! It's for you and your community first.

Just dreampt up an analogy on how my (sometimes frustrating) thought process works in conversations.

Imagine we're sitting in a park looking at clouds and you ask me "what do you see in the clouds?". I'll respond with "ooh, a plane" and then internally I'll think (in the space of 20s):

  • But what kind of plane?
  • Boeing 737?
  • Wait, Boeing who have safety issues?
  • Wait safety issues?
  • Did I ever resolve my servers backup issues?

"Hmm, I should fix my server today"

Other person: ???

I'm contemplating getting a speaker for the bathroom and tying it into some kind of audio player (RasPI?) in the loft space. Controlling it might be interesting, I'd need to find an LCD touchscreen to put on the wall outside. Something I can tie into Home Assistant and/or Spotify.

@philpem I just bought a cheapo internet radio for this purpose. Has an API you can control with HA, and you can just plug it into a local network stream.

I mostly did it this way because it meant I didn't need to maintain the RPi :D
