No I don't need to spin up a BSD to play with. Nope. nooooooo.

Haven't finished watching the freebsd at netflix prezi because reasons. Wondering what the security implications of bsd with zfs are given it records a checksum with data. Can't quite get my head around how the file system works - no volumes or partitions! Apparently there is a lot of freeBSD code in OSX. And yet the BSDs suffer from lack of developers.

@array I guess it wouldn't hurt to spin up a VM ....🤓 ....

All Your Base Are Belong to LLM

"The output from an LLM is a derivative work of the data used to train the LLM.

If we fail to recognise this, or are unable to uphold this in law, copyright (and copyleft on which it depends) is dead. Copyright will still be used against us by corporations, but its utility to FOSS to preserve freedom is gone."

@dentangle copyright already only serves those with the wherewithal to pursue breaches - i.e. $$$ to lawer up in a European court.

Does anyone else get the absolute heebies from the current trend for choppy editing? Taking out the very spaces between words? It's horrendous. The jumpiness of the video, too.

Added bonus, it softens people up for being ignorant for edits that rearrange words to misrepresent what people have actually said.

Really enjoying Cal Newport's new Slow book.

It makes you reflect on doing meaningful work while not burning out, following these 3 principles:

  1. Do less (!),
  2. Work at a more maintainable pace, and
  3. Obsess over the quality of your work.

Recommended!

@bbelderbos I've found some of his ideas useful. I wish I'd had his advice about an academic career years ago.

So weird seeing people gush over an obviously AI generated image. People's lack of discernment is astonishing.

Another shoutout re Late Night Linux podcasts - these discussions are just so good, you should subscribe. Calm, friendly and informative. General interest linux, nice analysis of recent xz backdoor, & so forth. Even stuff that is outside my area (no sysadmin or dev experience) is interesting - it's cool to hear about how stuff works, basically. Planning to actually drop some cash on a subscription once I get my paypal to play nice with patreon.

Linux Elitism...Again - Kev Quirk:
https://kevquirk.com/linux-elitism-again

This behaviour is shameful! Flooding a request for empathy with pushback. This is no way to promote software freedom, it rightly turns people off!

Some people (not me) have had a bad experience with "Linux", we must respect that.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@alcinnz wow those replies are astonishingly awful. I hope this doesn't put people off trying linux - and I'm sure it will, because I know how I feel when I see this behavior around other topics I'm interested in.

I have to use Windows products for work. It's not optional (running it in a virtual machine is still running it; these holier-than-though folk can buy me a capable computer if they think that's the answer, too). Crikey.

Yo, podcasters. Please make the rss of your show easy to find. Don't just point at a subscription platform. Some of us don't use mobile apps.

    @rayckeith side note: beware metadata and data aggregation. Buy your menstrual hygiene products,ibruprofen, and birth control at the same intervals whether you need them or not, preferably with cash. Pay attention to any other visible behaviours associated with your cycle and build in randomness. This includes mood swings that may be tracked by Facebook interactions.

    I have atrocious insomnia and I've been really enjoying Late Night Linux podcasts as an alternative to staring into the darkness. More laid back than some of my other listening choices (DarknetDiaries), just a bunch of folks quietly chatting linux stuff with some interesting detail around things like personal server management, security, new software, distro goss, and such. Do give them a listen.

    Just read the article I just boosted on ghosts of smart tech in homes ... now trying to imagine a home with that level of automation. . what I don't get - apart from security lighting pretending you're home, or if you have disabilities, - is 'why?' Flicking a light switch or drawing a curtain isn't exactly hard. It's a sort of 'because I can' scenario?

    helgztech,
    @helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

    @kyleejohnson I imagine that at some point I may experiment with some of this stuff - there's bound to be some open source, offline options - though it took me five years to put shades on our two loungeroom ceiling lights and we've still got the original drapes... I guess home decor is not really a priority! I hate to think how much putting electronic blinds up would cost.

    JFC, people in tech are really out there saying that language models will be better at therapy, financial advice, and career advice than trained people.

    WTF is wrong with you people? Do you really have no clue about what other people’s jobs actually involve?

    Language models can’t even do maths how are they supposed to get good at financial advice?

    And therapy? Just… 😑

    What’s wrong with people in tech?

    helgztech,
    @helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

    @tanepiper @baldur @tante I'm in higher education, and it's clear that most of the people designing and making decisions about implementation of cms/lms have little idea about the reality of knowledge work 'shop floor', too. I sometimes wonder if I have unrealistic expectations; an LMS is like a Theory of Everything, we ask too much of a single model.

    The venerable Voyager 1 spacecraft is experiencing another glitch. Instead of sending science and engg. data, it is sending a 0101 bit pattern.

    The problem has been narrowed down to the flight data system (FDS), which is not communicating properly with the telecom unit (TMU). A reboot did not help.

    Stay tuned as NASA engrs work out a fix for this 1970's era computer, which has performed magnificently during its long 46-year journey to the planets and to outer space.
