We mustn't put heads in the sand, but compassion fatigue is real. We drown in a sea of news; biased reporting is infuriating and stories switch from tragedy to trivia with barely a blink of the eye.

I've heavily curated all my feeds and pretty much abandoned the algorithmic ones. I know what is happening, but I don't need it in my face 24/7; that way lies helplessness and despair.

Whenever I get back into open source, I feel so much more optimistic about things. FLOSS is so contrary to the notion that people are fundamentally selfish. Maybe a lot of people are, but here is a community that loves to make cool things and share them. Where the idea of the greater good still has some value and is not antithetical to personal freedom. You get to feel like your computer is actually yours, not a corporate-mandated data-gathering device, and actually have fun with computing.

@grrrr_shark I'm on Fosstodon but people regularly splain the fundamentals of free software at me. I suspect sometimes we aren't good at phrasing conversational elaboration/justification of a position? Or do some folk just never get off their soap box?

Doing my annual rewatch. Currently the pilot. I love the way it uses all these submarine/war movie tropes - sealing off the compartments, the protagonist in the brig, and the inevitable showdown fistfight.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@tinker There was a lot of fan debate around the final series and ending, and certainly - like many series - the latter part isn't as strong as the first - but I love these characters and there's some brilliant storytelling throughout. I was absolutely obsessed for a while there. You should definitely watch again and persist to the end.

I kept my server going for about four months. I just killed it. It was in the Oracle Cloud, and the upgrade of from 9.2 to 9.3 was taking a long time. I thought it was hanging, and I hit ctrl-c. That stopped a "scriptlet." I reran the upgrade, which said it completed. I should have know then to remove the new kernel. I rebooted, and that was it.

I hadn't yet set up backups for this server because I considered it experimental.

I'll start a new one soon.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@voyager @passthejoe @mattdm is it possible to do a verbose upgrade so you know it hasn't hung?

oh hey my games are on deep discount on itch.io, and we still need all the financial help we can get in order to stay housed and fed until we can get kitsune tails out next year so buying them would be a huge help: https://eniko.itch.io/

they're also on sale on steam: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/15673/Kitsune_Games_Complete_Pack/

I am a huge humanist and feminist, and have devoted a lot of my life to expanding and advocating for diversity in technology and yet if I ever receive another email with the term “she-curity” in it again it will be way too soon, and I may shrivel into a corncob.

Someone please do a completely minimal Emacs intro for non programmers. Like what is the absolute essentials to start using it to write some notes. Like let a person get started without two dozen keyboardshortcuts. Pretty much everything I've come across so far is long-winded, boring and overcomplicated. Oh and youtubes that need a 46 inch screen if I've a hope of seeing the text. I'm too tired for this volume of verbiage.

Hey Educators & Tech Enthusiasts! 🧑‍🏫💻

I've been diving into the world of digitalization in schools and sharing news and tips on discussion forums for staff who are ready to embrace more digital and progressive methods. 🌐🍎

But here's the twist – I'm barely getting any responses. 🤔 So, I'm wondering: Are my posts not hitting the mark, or is it the forum itself that's not facilitating engagement? 🧐

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@teachpaperless I'd love to see some examples of the posts you're making - potentially there's a tone problem? Is the forum busy otherwise, with folk engaged? Is it a venue where people feel safe to disagree or make mistakes?

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@teachpaperless weeks before Christmas are possibly not ideal. It may well feel like an additional load that people aren't quite up for.

Try a question rather than tips?

Perhaps ask a colleague to be a confederate and help get the conversation going.

Maybe we need an eco-digital movement. Store your stuff on all those hard disks you already own. (back up, back up!) Delete accounts and data you don't use. Delete services you don't use.

When is cloud actually more economical/less computing/power intensive than local? Is that online resource actually greener than a printed paper one?

Swings and roundabouts?

the 'don't let your job become your identity' advice applies in academia, too. I've seen several 'indispensable' people leave or retire and others stepped seamlessly into their roles. Their presence may be missed in the lunch room for a while but the work gets done and the institution rolls on oblivious. You're not that special. Have a life that isn't your job.

I find my old ipod (and I suppose any vintage MP3 player would do) still brilliant for podcasts. The batter life is amazing despite its age, and I'm not deafened by alerts, its settings don't get messed up by updates, the sound settings are always where I want them, and there's no distractions a click away. The navigation is admittedly clunky as hell, especially if I want to fast forward.

Should I create a (Greek) mythology mystery box?

What would you expect to be in it? I've seen there are mystery boxes with clothes and jewellery but I'm not so much a fan of just "stuff" so something that is used up in some way like food or candles or soaps is what I would rather choose personally. Maybe with the hardcopy of a story or an art print or sticker(s). What do you think?

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@AimeeMaroux no. Random consumption is not what the world needs.

Sooner or later the afaics will need a group of "first level bug responders" to reduce workload and noise for maintainers and developers.

E.g. a group of people that triages incoming bug reports[1] and normally only lets those through to the real developers that meet some very basic requirements.

[1] point to dupes, check if the report is sane, check if all basic information is there, ...

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@kernellogger they definitely need some triage and management. Their work is too vital for them to be operating under burnout.

Also everyone needs to read Cal Newport's World Without Email.

Today in AI bullshittery:

Nvidia has trained an LLM on their codebase to save senior designers having to answer junior's questions about what some code does.

I don't know how many times i have to say this, but these are not search engines. They are not inference engines. Their answers are 100% "what would be a plausible sounding string of words to respond to that input?" that's it. That's all they do.

We talk a lot about , but has anyone heard of ? Just found it on @privacytools. I just want to know if anyone has used it and what their experience was like.

It appears that it is peer-to-peer but uses its own protocol unfortunately and not .

@Stark9837 @fediversenews @privacytools a friend was just asking about this but I'm finding very little discourse around Aether. It sounds like an interesting protocol, but there's no point if people aren't there. I feel Mastodon may have the critical mass.
