Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

@RickiTarr This is definitely a thing. I've noticed it most with my own mother, but also her sisters. Often it just comes in the form of detailing a story of whatever difficulty they are having, and the expectation is that the listener should volunteer to help.

@RickiTarr I did point it out to her once and told her that if she needs my help with something, she needs to just ask because I'm not good at picking up these sorts of social cues.

Ever since then I've stuck to that.

    Last month I bought some Sennheiser momentum 4 headphones. Today one ear up has experienced some sort of defect I think with the ANC. Heard a weird pop while listening to music, followed by static sort of sound. Now that static comes in every now and then and there is a noticeable pressure difference between the two ear ups, most noticeable with ANC at full strength.

    I did something to my right foot late last week. Thought it was just a typical soreness, made myself walk through it on Saturday. Sunday brought some serious pain, and yesterday morning it was so bad I could barely stand.

    So I called out yesterday and spent the majority of the day laid up with my foot elevated.

    This morning it's feeling a little better, enough to work. Still trying to avoid putting any undue strain on it.

    Welp, it's been over a month since anyone interacted with this account, and it's a pain to come in and manually post on spoiler days, so after 4+ years of posting every day, I'm going to shut down for a while. Ping me if you know of a way to automate posts with content warnings. Or maybe somebody could help me make a Discord bot instead, since that seems to be where most of the action is lately.

    @WOTCalendar How do your automated posts normally post? Are you utilizing the Mastodon API? Or still utilizing a post scheduler somewhere?

    @WOTCalendar ah. I haven't really checked out the various scheduling options in more than a year. I feel like there is probably one out there that includes content warnings, but not sure.

    @WOTCalendar I'm not sure that's really an "official" app. Looks like it's maybe developed by @David. The content warning does seem like an odd omission.

    Of course it's also odd that it's still (!) missing from the stock Mastodon UI.

    Looking at the API to post a status, there doesn't seem to be anything about scheduling a post that would prohibit the use of a content warning. I've scheduled one to post in a few minutes with a content warning, so I'll see if there was a problem with that.

    Mastodon v4.2.8 has just been released.

    On this release Mastodon changes the default registration mode to being closed. Meaning that if you have never changed the registration mode for your server, it will be closed by default.

    Also, it introduces a feature that will "automatically require approval for new registrations in the absence of moderators". Meaning that if no user with moderation permission has accessed the server in one week, the registration mode changes to require manual approval.

    I've honestly never seen so many people get upset over someone using a hashtag incorrectly ONE TIME!

    Like, do you folks understand that we're all human and make mistakes, and those of you who report/limit people for using the wrong hashtag are human just like the person who used the wrong hashtag?

    Since the beginning of the recent spam attack https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/111953045633249137, I have been monitoring Masto.host and, when possible, taking action to mitigate the effects of this attack.

    All actions I made should have minimal impact. Still, in cases where that was not so I have communicated those actions to the admins. So, if you have not received my email, no action was taken on your server.
