we're probably all on the same page, but I really hope that the spam prevention measures we develop going forward don't come at the cost of individuals being able to self-host small instances

We're dealing with similar problems as email did in the past. Attempts to curtail email spam wound up with the worst of both worlds - a defacto inability to self host and large amounts of spam

With some ingenuity and work I think it's possible to create a system that is both secure and open

@grrrr_shark That is honestly the element that confuses me the most. I would have expected the developer - or others that have been working with him on this project - to have been familiar with the controversies surrounding other quick fediverse projects and just how often "make it opt-in by default" is the immediate feedback.

Hello Fediverse!

Today we're taking another important step in our journey to fully federate Flipboard.

This morning we federated 1,000 Flipboard Magazines curated by the publishers we have been testing federation with in addition to 20 new publishers we are federating today. These include magazines like Adventure Travel by Outside, Eater DC by Eater, Explore NYC by Thrillist, Throwbacks by SPIN, and Climate Tech by Bloomberg.

Flipboard Magazines are a simple way to curate articles, images, videos and podcasts into a thematic feed. This powerful curation tool has been at the heart of Flipboard since 2012 with millions of magazines curated since about recipes, road trips, architecture, books, tech trends and so much more.

Federated magazines become native #ActivityPub feeds and can be followed by anyone on Mastodon. For example, check out my Following the Fediverse magazine @following

I believe that thoughtfully curated feeds have the power to make social media a lot more effective and inspiring so I'm excited to bring millions of these magazines to the #Fediverse as we federate all public curators in the next few weeks.

Watching Halo S2E2. Really liked the first episode of the season. Quite action-packed. Still have to remember though that those action scenes are often going to be very expensive, which means they have to pick their moments.

I'm not on Threads, but what I've heard of its continued growth suggests it's not dead.

BlueSky, while having open registrations now, isn't really a part of the fediverse. It's a different protocol and doesn't interoperate with anything just yet.

But if it were a part of the fediverse, I would actually say that would make social media -less- fractured. And when Threads eventually connects more fully with the fediverse that will have the same effect.

Been trying this out secretly for the past few weeks — a "catch-up" timeline page. Did whole bunch of iterations, where I myself is the guinea pig, but this time reaching a point where I just got to share it out in the public.

  • NOT final design, still very experimental, only on my local machine
  • Instead of algo timeline, this is focused on data-grid-like UI for configuring exactly what I want to see.
  • This honestly could be another full-fledged app/client by itself 🫠

@cheeaun Very cool looking. I remember that there was an Android client that was working on a similar view, showing authors first with a badge to indicate posts, then clicking through to view only those posts.

This looks really good on a full desktop. Love the quick toggle sorting and filtering options.

#Goodreads, which I now use very sparingly in read-only mode ("what did I think about X book? what's on my to-read list?”) has gotten /so slow/ I'm about to write a tiny script to parse my final export/backup into Markdown to shove it into my #Obsidian vault.

Think about what a low bar that is. I'm so annoyed by how sluggish their site is I'm about to do /work/ to get completely off of it!

I have been using Storygraph for a couple of years now and really like it. Exported my Goodreads data and imported it into Storygraph. There was some cleanup I had to do, as Goodreads was often missing start / end dates for reading history.

What I really like about Storygraph is that it's not bloated the way that Goodreads is. The interface is clean and fairly easy to navigate and it has very few unwanted features. The stats are cool too. https://app.thestorygraph.com/stats/hybridhavoc?year=2024
