Revevger by Alistair Reynolds

The world is a strange mix of space-faring and Victorian, but not steampunk. The plot twists were actually pretty surprising and more macabre than I was expecting, even given the name of the book is Revenger. The book was creative, and it was delightful to read YA without a romance involved and to just see this young woman grow into who she needed to be. That woman is quite engaging and powerful.

Woke up in the middle of the night with my calf muscle cramping like a son of a bitch. Still quite sore and tight.

Also had a weird dream where I was visiting my old elementary school for some reason, chatting with others my own age or older. Got the impression that it was maybe meant to be some kind of reunion or something, but I noticeably didn't recognize anybody I was talking to. They all seemed to enjoy my silly jokes though, so that's a plus.

I thought I'd bitten the shit out of the inside of my mouth during the test, but today it seems I ended up with fucking blisters for some unknown reason.

@grrrr_shark Definitely extreme. I can't remember my number when I got diagnosed, but it was enough that they expedited the rest of the process.

The other day, I mentioned here: https://allthingstech.social/@cliffwade/111767025900398705 That I was looking to move away from Gmail, but more specifically create a new email address since I had been using the same one for 20 years and decided to give @protonmail and @fastmail both a try.

I have decided to go with Fastmail as I feel it meets my needs a bit better at this time. I have even decided to go with a paid plan, which is something I thought I'd never do, pay for email!

What's your theory on the making of the horn?

@TarValonNet The horn is a diagnostic batch script used to call lots of processes at once for a short time. Originally designed for load testing, it was found to come in very handy for dealing with the periodic system instabilities that arise in the simulation from time to time.

I think I'm going to give YouTube Music another shot. It just doesn't make any sense to pay for a separate music streaming subscription on top of what I already pay for YouTube when YouTube Music is included. Especially given that my own music listening is relatively minimal.

@bitprophet I would never go for a large power bank to use wireless charging. For me, that's a use case for a really small one tossed into a tiny pocket in my backpack - there just in case, but not for normal use.

My bigger power bank is USB-C.

I also have a flashlight coming this week that can serve as a USB-C power bank, but I don't expect to use that particular feature often.

@bitprophet the ability to slap it magnetically to the back of my phone and throw it in my pocket or back into my backpack, and expect it to stay attached. That's the use case to me for the magsafe power banks.

I also wouldn't mind having a power bank hoodie with a magsafe connection sewn into the hoodie pocket or something.

@TarValonNet Back when I was a teenager reading the series it was definitely Rand, followed closely by Lan.

These days it's probably Moiraine. Mostly just comes down to who I associate with better. I'm certainly not the young hero, but maybe I could be the wise mentor trying to navigate the kids safely through the world.

Also Loial because he's the best.

    @jynersolives I never did the street kid start. The corpo backstory was my second playthrough as well and I thought it was a pretty good fit. I still think that the nomad backstory feels like it was the original one, with the others added as alternatives.

    @TarValonNet I've probably mentioned it before, but I think my favorite moment from The Eye of the World is when the group all comes back together in Caemlyn. That reunion has always felt bittersweet in my re-reads.
