Portland based renewable energy meteorologist trying to make #wxtooter a thing. Mediocre geologist. Standard bio disclaimers apply. Usually toots using metric units.

Also tooting my thoughts about urban living, my LDS faith, family life, and some other random stuff from time to time.

I love the snark in the Lord of the Rings.

‘Once I do get to sleep,’ said Sam, ‘I shall go on sleeping, whether I roll off or no. And the less said, the sooner I’ll drop off, if you take my meaning.’

The city is closing about 10 km of streets to vehicle traffic in Northeast #Portland from 11:00 to 16:00 today for the second Parkways event where people can #bike, #walk, or otherwise use the roads without having to worry about cars.

There will be live music, vendors, information, and free basic bike tuneups along the route. I wish I could go, but I’m working today.

My favorite wine bar in Portland, they have the best collection from around the world and they are the friendliest 💙

ingalls,

@shinal I get unreasonably excited when I see a picture in Portland and I can recognize the spot. You’re maybe half a dozen blocks from me!

Ever look at a business and think "That's gotta be a front for a drug operation"? That's how I feel about most rug stores.

ingalls,

@iMike best haircut I ever had was from a barber that was busted a month later for dealing drugs out of his store.

Early hints of an Independence Day for the Pacific Northwest in the modeling. Not a whole lot of confidence yet, though. Stay tuned.

ingalls,

@stevesplace It (probably) won’t be like that.

A train derailment and bridge collapse sent eight rail cars into the River near Big Timber, Saturday morning. There is a possible chemical spill and downstream users, including irrigation districts and the city of , are closing head gates.

ingalls,

@enobacon in the very least nationalize the physical rail lines and let companies operate on them at a reasonable cost.

We got a mailer from PBOT about a proposed streetcar extension up NW 23rd to Montgomery Park, including a survey to submit my opinion.

This is very exciting to me, but I am apprehensive about the lack of enforcement regarding drug use at Streetcar stops. We don’t own a car, and I often bring my three year old with us on . It’s hard to feel comfortable waiting at stops when I have to worry about what she’s breathing.

Ok,

Explain your weather to me like I'm 5.

ingalls,

@unabogie it is cold up above and warm down here. Warm air rises, taking water with it and cools to form clouds (and storms). Today’s up is being boosted by air moving up the river from the coast.

ingalls,

@unabogie well the sky is drunk on carbon

Q8. Our last question is a joyful one from @gauche:

What is an experience of serendipity or joy that you could not have had via a conveyance other than a bicycle (or other type of -cycle)?

ingalls,

@gauche @ascentale I feel like on bike I get more appreciation for the local terrain than by any other mode of transportation - including walking. Slight upward slopes go from unnoticeable to mild inconveniences but slight downward slopes are a joy. Q8

Q5. @chrisphin asks about barriers that stop people from considering cycling a paractical, realistic, and fun option:

What are factors that used to (or still) keep you from getting on a bike, and what do you think of them now? Were they valid? Have circumstances changed?

ingalls,

@chrisphin @ascentale My biggest concern is drivers and incomplete bicycle infrastructure. As much as I hate to say it, homeless folks along bike paths are a concern too mostly because I don’t know if/where to expect paths to be blocked by tents and being new to town I don’t know safe ways to get around yet. I plan to get around that second issue by exploring more and getting to know Portland better on casual (not destination specific) rides. A5

Welcome to (similar to on the other site). Thank you for following along tonight, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about bikey stuff on Mastodon! These posts are autoscheduled as we're in the 3rd week of our Kamishibai workshop (out of 4). Feel free to answer asynchronously at your convenience. We'll start out with an introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today, and what was your last ride on a cycle?

ingalls,

@ascentale @enobacon I’m down a hill in Portland and most recently went on e-bike with my wife and 3 year old up to Gabriel Park and then down to that fountain kids can play in in the Pearl. Next week I’m thinking I might test the range by running the Springwater out to Boring and back with 100 lbs of gear to see if I can use my bike to take trips to the coast.

ingalls,

@enobacon @ascentale Boring is about 80 km round trip for me, Astoria (where we would get a hotel) is about 115 km one way. Our bikes supposedly can do 280 km on a charge but I doubt it.

ingalls,

@enobacon @ascentale that’s what I was thinking but I don’t want to be in the middle of the woods on the side of a highway 2/3 the way there with a dead battery and a bored three year old so I figure I better do a dry run before committing.

ingalls,

@enobacon @ascentale @madcodger that’s not a problem for me but good to know. Maybe I’ll turn around once the gravel starts on my test ride just because my long-distance routes would all be paved surfaces. A1

ingalls,

@ascentale @enobacon oh boy this is definitely something I will be playing with over the weekend, thank you!

First milestone in roadmap accomplished! We got a handful of alpha testers using 🥳

Next week is ironing it out before we start our incremental rollout to our testers.

A marine push is likely to reach around 17:00-19:00 to bring cooler air from the coast and a bit of a breeze coming up the Columbia. It looks like this is the boundary which will produce the afternoon t-storm if the storm does happen.
