ingalls,

@ai6yr Republicans: No one wants to work anymore.

Also Republicans: Make it so cities like Dallas can’t mandate water breaks for workers during heat waves.

Question for Mastodon’s and crowd: Does anyone know of a good way for me to attach a second adult-size bike to mine to pull it as a trailer?

We don’t have the battery power to make it to the coast, but if my wife road the bus and I took the bikes that would give me extra battery availability and allow us to use the bikes to get around whatever town we decide to go to. We both have Lectric Xpeditions.

ingalls,

@glightly Thanks for this idea! This made me realize I have running boards. I wonder if I could pop the front wheel onto one and strap it in using a bunch of bungee cords. 🤔

ingalls,

@glightly @Kellyshenanigans Good call there. I wonder if I can also employ my rigid bike lock to add additional help to keep the wheel steady.

ingalls,

@glightly An additional consideration is ratchet strapping the frame near the wheel to the bike and not using the wheel as the mount at all.

Welcome to (similar to on the other site). Thank you for following, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about bikey stuff! These posts are autoscheduled as we're in the 4th week of our Kamishibai workshop, and then we're watching a local hill climbing race(!). Feel free to answer asynchronously at your convenience. We'll start out with an introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today, and what was something neat that you recently saw or experienced while on a bike?

ingalls,

@ascentale Hello again from Portland! We went to a Thorns (women’s soccer) game the other night. They close a street and pull out a ton of bike racks. It was fun leaving with a ton of other bicyclists. Riding in a group larger than two is something I’ve never done before. A1

Ah yes... YouTube is banning users for not watching their advertisements and Twitter has turned off tweet visibility unless you let them track you by login. We've gotten to the "companies punish you for not giving them money" stage of end-stage capitalism. I love this for us.

ingalls,

@ConsoleWitch I eagerly look forward to a PeerTube app for iOS. Until then it’s incredibly tedious to use. Mastodon could be reasonably functional in the browser, but PeerTube is a whole other animal.

A satellite communications system serving the Russian military was knocked offline by a cyberattack late Wednesday and remained mostly down on Thursday, in an incident reminiscent of an attack on a similar system used by Ukraine at the start of the war between the countries.

Roberts claims that it's "disturbing" that the Supreme Court is being called out for going beyond its scope.

What’s disturbing is a SCOTUS comparing student debt relief to the French Revolution, then traipsing around the world on the shadow Supreme Court’s dime.

ingalls,

@kbeninato It’s not always on the SCOTUS dime. Sometimes it’s on the dime of billionaires influencing SCOTUS with undisclosed gifts.

Hmm, it appears the I have here that clone are finally dead, with the switch for the birdsite to require login to view tweets. There is an extensive list of alternative weather bots that @lckrohjr and myself have running (the IEMBOT). I am going to swap the bots to pull weather stories/etc., but will be some time. BIGGER ISSUE: NWS TORNADO BOT WILL NOT RUN.

ingalls,

@lckrohjr @ai6yr Please don’t forget our bot(s) running on pdx.social! Thanks for running these.

With a payload of 110 kg, no pedaling, and not running the throttle above 25 km/h, my was able to make it 34 km on a single battery (it holds two). Pretty content with that since usually we’ll pedal some, use both batteries for long journeys, and have a payload closer to 70-90 kg.

I made it from NW Portland (CN85PM) to Gresham (CN85TL) on my Lectric Xpedition.

Morning marine layer bringing stratus to part of the metro but this evaporates into mostly sunny skies over the course of the morning. Additional clouds possible near sunset with a high near 26°C.

Rinse and repeat the next few days except trending warmer toward a heat wave early next week. Thicker marine stratus on the coast with some sunbreaks, scattered thunderstorms in an east of the Cascades.

Very excited to have done the full waterfront loop (including going around a train on Front) on my own power by today (not using the e-bike motor at all, though I did take my battery just in case). Today’s 17.7 km is way better than last time’s 5.9 km.

It’s still a bit short of what I could do when I rode regularly but this is a big motivation boost.

ingalls,

@madcodger It’s pretty heavy. When I have one battery in it’s about 30 kg vs 10 kg for a road bike. I grew up riding mountain bikes which are in between.

Marine layer stratus for some will evaporate as the morning progresses, leaving mostly sunny skies and a high near 26°C. Some high clouds possible this afternoon and evening.

Similar conditions for this week with a heat wave possible to start next week.

The 18z run of the GFS gives a high of 43°C (110°F) on July 3 and 4, which would break daily records by a fair margin.

You may see this spouted without context but it is an outlier. Note that the GFS ensemble mean is 33°C and recent runs of the GFS have only gotten up to 40°C. Other models peak even lower.

A is coming, and modeling may change between now and then, but anyone showing you this GFS output without context should be dismissed.
