Hmm, when did California lose it and start using plastic bags again at grocery stores? The pandemic? For awhile there I thought everyone was using (at the very least) beefier recycled plastic bags instead of throwaway plastic, but apparently someone lobbied someone so people are just buying more disposable plastic bags (at 10 cents a shot) in my neighborhood. 😢
(Nope... I do not go to the grocery store much, LOL).
@ai6yr Slight random note: while in Japan earlier this year, I saw a lot of people rocking these style bags: https://www.shupatto-usa.com/ Bought a couple myself. They really are handy. Some of them will even slip over the handle of your roll’y-bag luggage.
They would use it for groceries/shopping or just to haul their trash until they got home.
@ai6yr Zac Efron has a documentary show called “down to earth”, when they visited a commune in Costa Rica they had a sign “a weed is just a plant whose purpose hasn’t been found”
TIL: perfume is considered a "hazardous material" by the USPS. (I mean, I always thought the same in general, but you can't mail it without special packaging/declaration/etc.) #perfume#postage#USPS
@ai6yr A few weeks ago, I got on a United bird, a 787 bound for Tokyo. We were on the plane, and delayed due to the some mechanical issue. An hour goes by an eventually they come on to tell us the plane isn’t going anywhere, hydraulic issue. Took a few hours to get a replacement plane & crew.
Today's score at the material reuse site for our city: 4 cans of black spray paint (already applied to my back fence), 1 bottle of concentrated window cleaner, and an i5 Dell Optiplex small(ish) micro form factor desktop. (not that I need any more CPU here🤔 ...)
Starlink launch from Vandenberg tonight moved to 9:57p (only mention the annoying billionaire's space company here because everyone will hear it...) #space#SantaBarbara#sonicboom#launch#vandenberg
Our team at @watchdutyapp
plans to bring wildfire coverage to Texas and Hawaii this year! But to do this, we need dedicated volunteer reporters who can bring their communities accurate, actionable information.
@ai6yr Curious if the ham radio community in Hawaii would be interested in taking on this challenge. Especially those who are retired, maybe even able to host equipment?
Noticed this at the temporary housing the other day. Daylight through a door... leaking heat out, cold in. Easy fix to this. Really helpful during something like this Polar Vortex to minimize heat loss. #weatherization#insulation#enery#EnergyEfficiency
Aha, my friend @W2AYZ sent me a photo of his ham radio bicycle trailer, full mobile radio with antenna mounted in a bicycle trailer (with batteries) -- contemplating my own setup, just because... #hamradio#BikeTooter
@ai6yr I used to have this setup on my bike, but only for APRS tracking. Only connected it to my Kenwood D72, but it worked. After a while I realized, I just want a bike and nothing more.
@ai6yr Not every person is worth your time and energy.
Every now and then I have this want to reply to some dumb comment on Reddit, type up my comment… and then delete it. Walk away and eventually I’ll forget about it.
Hmm, "borrowed" a DVD I wanted to watch from a Little Free Library I was walking by with the dog today. (the LA Times just called them a "sign of gentrification" -- although, arguably, this neighborhood was already, by definition, gentrified).
Me: I'd like a reliable laptop with good battery life, lets me get my work done, which I can load all the tools I need... no shoving ads in my face, channeling my data for advertising, trying to sell me things, and not locking me into hardware.
I believe I have tracked down the strange surges in PM2.5 being detected by my indoor air sensor: pet dander! Kept seeing strange spikes, and I think it correlates to the dog shaking when he gets up from wherever he is lying. 🤔 #AQI
Flash flooding in Pago Pago (which apparently is covered by the National Weather Service) #PagoPago#Flood (Wondering if anyone in Pago Pago is actually on the Fediverse?)
#Random stuff I learned this week: Low voltage devices should be routed independently and away from any kind of power, to separately colored/marked low voltage boxes (NEVER next to AC). And you need to use Plenum grade Ethernet cabling to meet code compliance (for fire safety). And there are nifty things called "Nail plates" to prevent people from accidentally nailing or drilling through your important stuff (i.e. electrical, plumbing) #Ethernet#remodeling
Restoration crew was slightly embarrassed by my successful deployment of two Corsi Rosenthal boxes they replaced them with their own professional grade air scrubber... basically the same thing in an industrial box.
