There is a small, legendary, sport event happening over in Tennessee, USA known as the Barkley Marathons . It happens every year and has been since 1986 and in all those years, only 17 runners have completed the course. We're not talking being a winner, just finishing the course (you have 60 hours to complete five rounds, making 100 miles, 160 km). No woman has ever completed the course.

Currently the legendary Jasmin Paris is on the final loop and about to make history! The internet is cheering her on.

🆕 blog! “Why are there no viable nuclear power plants for the home?”

Whenever you talk about renewable energy, it's impossible to avoid a very particular strain of reply-guy. The "Nuclear is really good actually" dude is convinced that you have critically misunderstood Our-Lord-And-Saviour Uranium. Nukes are clean! They are cheap! They are s…

jalal,

@Edent Good question but I'm not sure why a home needs a nuke rather than a neighbourhood. A certain amount of scale is useful.
But why use uranium for a nuke, it's dangerous, long lived and produces plutonium, only good for weapons? Oh, maybe that's why...
Thorium is much better (and there are other options).
Why use very high pressure steam and intense heat that needs massive control systems? Instead of a nice, flowing liquid salt system.

The main thing holding back affordable, small scale liquid salt thorium reactors is a raft of regulations largely sponsored by certain vested interests. But there are signs of change, especially in the US. So coming soon...?

What's more satisfying...?

jalal,

@girlonthenet should have been a third option: 'both'

I have a dentist appointment later today. While I don't like dentists, I don't have a real 'fear' of them. My neighbor, however, is terrified.

Please boost for a wider demographic

Are you afraid of the dentist?

jalal,

@dancinyogi maybe your neighbour's dentist is a terrifying person? Mine is a sweet guy who definitely is not terrifying :)

I'm quite annoyed that has died and taken down all my .ml domains.

Does anyone know of a which is actually selling .ml domains? All the ones I've found list them, but don't actually allow a purchase once you go through checkout.

jalal,

@Edent I haven't tried it, but Gandi.net list them as available at a cost of €27.63 for the first year.

jalal,

@Edent Ah, I see. I get a popup that I need a one month subscription to Corp Services (if I don't have that) at €59.50 which is a one off payment. Seems expensive...

Hello Mastodon followers, help please.

If you are a follower, could you kindly "like" this post when you see it so I can gauge how many are seeing/reading my Mastodon posts?

Nominally I have 41k followers on here, but I think that figure is artificially inflated because of how many came over last November and then went away again.

Many thanks.

jalal,

@davidallengreen does like mean 'favorite' or 'boost'?

But I do notice your Toots more over here and less buried in the noise.

This evening has mostly been powered by being frustrated by C++ and XML. Two technologies I thought we'd left in the last century.

jalal,

@Edent lord no, I've spent a happy few days running XSLT over some XML. Living the dream 😁

my feed is very heavy on intense lectures today and it’s like…the thing about hammering away on network ethics (even when you are right) vs making it ridiculously easy for people to join and find their friends and follow people posting dumb jokes is that only one of those things meets the big human need for connection and play (even when the easy fun path might lead directly off a cliff)

it’s nice to be right, but making ethically better things way more effective is a much stronger move 🤷🏻

jalal,

@evan @kissane An important distinction between here and the bird site, is that the original focus here (and hopefully ongoing) is to create a space for connection, whereas the other site was focused on monetising personal connection (and conflict).
But that is not something written into the protocol, so we need to be active to create that space...

Running a Mastodon instance is thankless work, which I imagine is why I've seen so many admins burn out already.

jalal,

@evan @evacide
Backend programming is a thankless task, but I get paid for it, it's a job and I get on with it.
I think running a 'largish' instance needs to be thought of as a job and paid for as such.
