I'm at the museum of natural history and a 7 year old is explaining to another kid that "as people grow older they turn into apes. That's why this person is 70 thousand years old and he is almost like an ape. Then they go extinct." 😅

seeing whether reading the elon musk sues sam altman lawsuit would bring pain or joy, and as always I love reading the "guy sues everyone" style lawsuit because who are these precisely 100 other people listed as Does here?

Also is et seq. the rich guy etc.? and is complaint (5) just "Accounting"?

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@jonny It will never not be funny to me just how many "look, ma, AGI" papers are literally just people not understanding that LLMs at this scale likely already have numerous versions of these tests included in their training data. My favorite terrible examples were the one on scoring GPT-4 on the Alternative Uses Test, and the one asking for answers to old r/AskDocs questions and then scoring the responses relative to the existing comments on those same posts by real doctors 🙄

My dad is having his first job interview in more than 30 years and hooh boy is there so much knowledge about video calling technology and etiquette that I just took for granted 😳 Like, I can't explain why, but calling into an interview in portrait mode feels so casual / unprofessional... but his computer is so old that the only usable webcam he has is an iPad, and landscape mode on the iPad means it's hard to look into the camera on the side while talking 🙃 Wish him luck! #HCI #UI #UX

Idea: A survival roguelike, but instead of being set in the wilderness or in a fantasy dungeon, it's set in an impossibly huge multi-level underground shopping mall that nobody ever seems to leave. Instead of elves, goblins, etc, you have different mall subcultures - goths, fashion kids, oldwalkers, etc. (No fucking zombies, if you suggest zombies I will defederate your entire goddamn server.) Some areas of the mall suffer from a cursed blight due to the rise of online shopping.

Idly looking at the difference between the original 4:3 release of MASH and the new widescreen version.

The newer version looks so much better - but crops a fair bit from the top and bottom.

But the original version is missing a bunch of stuff from the sides of the images.

Now wondering if I can correct the scaling of the 16:9 version and overlay it on the 4:3 to get the maximum amount of image 😆

4:3 capture - there's more detail at the top and bottom.
Two men at a bar - the bell to the right is cut off.
Two men at a bar - the bell to the right is more visible as is a hatstand on the left. But the top and bottom of the image is missing.

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@Edent This might be an interesting case for Photoshop Action scripting; it might be hard to get the color grading right to blend the two versions, but if you were able to solve that with Curves / Levels, you could use generative fill to fill in the corners, and then just process each frame with the action script before re-assembling with FFMPEG. Another challenge though would be applying some sort of lerp to the generative fill to avoid frame-to-frame jumpiness

So I am catching up on the peer-reviewed AI generated giant rat dick (words that really should never have been in a sentence together). 🧪 And @sabs.bsky.social offers a good summary dhttps://defector.com/the-brief-and-wondrous-life-of-the-ai-giant-penised-rat-explained

But also I find @doctorzen.bsky.social 's post on this really critical. Everyone is talking predatory publishing, failures of peer review. 🧪

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@Supervinh47 @beebrookshire At this point, the folks at groups like Data Colada and Retraction Watch should be taxpayer funded. If we're spending this much money on research, we should spend the appropriate amount to catch and penalize academic misconduct. It undermines lifesaving research 🙁

A nice little paper arguing that Chord diagrams are generally harder to understand than Sankney plots for the same data. Relevant for when people will next request the "nice circular diagrams" for a bioinformatics analysis: https://dl.acm.org/doi/fullHtml/10.1145/3544548.3581119

I've long assumed that new math would fall out of attempts to explain and optimize ML models, and that this new math would have far-reaching implications for other computationally difficult tasks.

Part A of this assumption seems to be coming true:

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@betsythemuffin Eek. There's a reason Pedro Domingos is a solo author these days, and there's a reason this paper is on ArXiv and not in a peer reviewed journal. All models are wrong, but some models are useful, and I'm not sure that this reduction is useful or really novel. Domingos is notorious for ad libbing ad nauseum on podcasts and YouTube about pop-ML while incessantly broadcasting hateful content on women, minorities, and the disabled. He's like the Jordan Peterson of machine learning.

janeadams, (edited )
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@betsythemuffin This paper reminds me a lot of that one paper (can't find it right now) that basically claimed a "groundbreaking" discovery that 'all neural networks can actually be written as a series of if/else statements'. That author fundamentally missed the point that if your number of if/thens equals your number of parameters.. you haven't reduced complexity or improved interpretability at all, it's still a black box. This paper does something similar

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@betsythemuffin We are already well aware of the structure of feature space as having high and low probability pockets - that's basically what you're seeing in projections like tsne and umap. The notion of a kernel machine is simply to draw a path through that space based on the density of those areas. I wouldn't really call that "new math". Domingos repeatedly does this in his broadcasting, where he makes big sweeping generalizations about things we already know. Next he'll be calling this xAGI

janeadams, (edited )
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@betsythemuffin Personally I have no use for people who say things like "AIs are like autistic savants and will remain so for the foreseeable future... [they] lack common sense and can easily make errors that a human never would" and "will serve our species" like people with autism aren't human(??)

He rails against the "woke mob" and ethics reviews as part of journal acceptance criteria. Even the fact that he has dubbed his AGI nonsense the "Master Algorithm" is so problematic 🥴

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@betsythemuffin If this was a PhD student I'd be proud of them for understanding the conceptual model of high dimensional feature space... If it were submitted to a conference for blind review, I would say it would serve better as a chapter in a textbook for improving mental models, certainly not as "new math". The fact that this is a professor emeritus who shills conservative ideology on the backs of other people's work.. His name and his Twitter are why people think this paper is at all useful

@quixote @Strandjunker one of my favorite 'fancy people party' tricks is telling people I believe in a 100% inheritance tax and then watching them sputter in horror about how in a world with truly no intergenerational wealth, no amount of fortune could prevent their children from having to attend...

😱🌩️ public school 🌩️😱

Then when I suggest that the inheritance tax could be used to improve public schools, so it wouldn't actually be so bad, they mutter something about them being irreparable :(

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@ln @quixote @Strandjunker The unfortunate reality is that it would likely just result in more tax evasion loopholes (life insurance anyone?) It sure is a fun exercise though, along with telling conservative libertarians that the most libertarian thing to do would be to eliminate state and national borders entirely, thereby avoiding the immigration problem entirely ("no one can be an illegal immigrant if immigration isn't illegal")

@simevidas Ah I've come across this before.. IIRC, it's because 1 < 3 is evaluated first (True), and True < 2 evaluates to True because it is coerced to be numeric, so 1 < 2.

The dynamic of one key aspect of the .

We already know that the house price to average wage multiple has roughly tripped in the last decades (from three times, when I was young, to around nine times now), but this hides the difference between men & women - which we would of course expect given the disparity in average earnings.

Nonetheless its worth pointing it out, as it again emphasises that we still have a long way to go on equalising women's economic oportuntues!.

Intro post for discuss.systems: hi, I'm Andrew! TLA+ is my main thing these days, both on-contract (writing specs, reviewing specs) and personal projects (working on test infra to safely open up the TLA+ tools to changes). Other than that I'm learning/using nix and hoping to get into verified low-level development this year!

I moved here from fosstodon because so many of you are working on & writing about interesting things, and I like scrolling the local feed!

If you're interested in TLA+ there's a virtual community meeting tomorrow at 11 ET which is usually a fun time. The meeting link is in the events in this google calendar: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=cb3f93f188c92378a8fec42b25365ab2a64665d770a8265c1fcec00e03823c6c%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America%2FLos_Angeles
