But that’s beside the point. I own my server, and you don’t. Therefore, I decide who and what my server operates with—not you.
As for whether or not popularity impacts who I interact with. Not really—but network effect certainly does.
My family is likely to join Threads. They’re not so likely to join QQ. Despite QQ being more popular than Threads, federating with Threads has a bigger impact on me due to its network effect on my life.
What some extremists fail to realize is that talking to my mother is more important to me than talking to some random dude from mas.to. Sorry, but I’m not sorry. To me, my mother takes precedence.
But beyond that, people I know realize that I’ve been working on decentralized social media for years. All this time, I’ve pushed for them to leave Meta’s services. Mostly they haven’t done it. Them seeing that it’s possible to interact with me while they use Threads—and I don’t—is a big step towards them realizing that decentralized social media is not just real but practical.
I have priorities. When it comes to social interactions, family and friends come first. Sure, I have left Facebook and Instagram, but if there’s an opportunity to communicate with those services without using them, I will take it.
@atomicpoet Me too. I gave up a lot from leaving Twitter, and FB. But, as much as I know I lost that network, my mental health by not being in those services is a hundred times better than having that network.
@atomicpoet But do they know why? That is the question. If they can an answer, then they have listened to it, and then the question for them are they now gay because they know the lyrics?
Of course, I just like to watch their heads explode when confronted with their own gayness. :)
The one thing I don't like about @fastmail is that you are limited to 100GB of email storage and there appears to be no way to increase that limit unless I'm missing something somewhere.
While 100GB seems sufficient, I'd really like to have at least 500GB of storage.
On my Gmail account I could purchase extra storage and I had 2TB of storage and was using 54% of that.
With yesterday's announcement that Meta is starting to test Threads and ActivityPub integration, I see the #Fediverse is at an all time high again of whining and crying and being butthurt over it all.
I get stating your opinion about not wanting them here or whatever, but come on people, don't sound like a little 2 year old who lost their pacifier. It gets old, quick.
Just mute/block and move on and be done with it all. It's really that damn simple.
@cliffwade As much as I don't like corporate social media, I think the integration will actually do more help and legitimacy towards the Fediverse.
Now, I don't think Mastodon and the wider Fediverse need legitimacy but it puts the Fediverse on the same playing field and shows options for users and companies about taking control of their social media.
What will be interesting is will corporate social media allow criticism towards them from the Fediverse or will they censor.
