The Fedi angst: The view from a Fedi-loving normie. 🧵

I’ve spent much of today pouring over various comments and discussion about the first toe dips of Threads and Meta into the Fediverse. The responses are kind of amazing. From excitement to revulsion, I get them all and I understand them. But the more I think about it, the more I think folks are creating a “why” that may not exist.

To start, I do follow people on Threads. Many of my Twitter follows have migrated off the Bad Place to Threads. Some have not. However, I anticipate as X becomes more people’s ex, Threads is where they will go.

I love the Fedi. I’ve worked hard to build my follows and find my peeps. But it takes work. For me, that work has borne fruit. It’s my place to connect and get my wonderfully chaotic feed.

A lot of folks chose the fedi because they felt and are excluded or targeted and it offers them a community that lets them protect themselves and instances that help protect them. I love that. 1/x

@rameshgupta @Bam You mean the email where it'll land your mails in spam unless you follow the ever more convoluted and difficult dance of configuring your server with DKIM and DMARC and so forth, standards set by gmail?

Yeah, "fine".

Thinking about how Folks held on to Twitter and Facebook for so long. I kinda feel that the folks who want mastodon/fedi to replace those networks perhaps didn't realise that for some of us, we'd already moved several times.

Once you've moved on from your first one emotionally it's easier.

So for those of us where this isn't their first rodeo what was your network pre Facebook? :BoostOK:

@interpeer @ajroach42 A few months ago you were asking for a CLI of this, kind of. It's rough still, but it exists now.

The basic idea is that each of the parts can be transmitted either by some computer network, or by sneakernet. If you re-assemble them all in any order, you still get the contents intact.

Slow day today (cold season caught up with me).

I caught up with the last few episodes of Season 5 of Lower Decks today, and when the baddie was revealed, my brain immediately recalled the name and what the dude was in TNG.

I exist in a superposition of "a fan" and "not a fan" of Star Trek, and collapse into fandom in those moments. Most of the time, not so much.

4yo, speculatively: Sometimes, boys have vaginas and girls have penises.

Me: yes, that's true! Only people sometimes don't believe them, and say if you have a penis, you must be a boy. But you're right, it isn't always like that!

This is how easy it is to explain this stuff to kids, folks. Easier than explaining bees and flowers.

I don't know who I'm posting this for, but you may find it interesting. I've been adding subtitles to @interpeer_talks videos (not all finished yet), and here are some notes.

First off, I've been using https://github.com/m1guelpf/auto-subtitle which is using whisper.

Whisper has an annoying API in that it'll extract speech from all the video before returning it, which means if your process fails at any time before completion, you won't get partial text. Who designs an API like that in this century?

sigh

I just looked at my follower count in ages, and realized I have a responsibility to fedi.

In order to fulfill this responsibility, here is a baby pangolin flopped on it's mum's tail.

(Source is difficult to pinpoint, it's all over pinterest, but posted by different people. Sorry!)

Having added subtitles to https://makertube.net/w/hRk3z3R7fue1dcJpZzN7vY now, I have to say this... at the time, I was very nervous giving a talk like this with very experienced people. And I'm blown away on rewatching it now just how good the responses were.

Nobody, not even people raising doubts, made a bad point.

It feels great!

(Another video to go, then I'm done for now.)

@pathway is a bot account that DMs you messages from other folk, without providing a link to their profile.

There is little info on what the bot does, e.g. whether it allows the sender to circumvent instance blocks, etc.

I got a relatively unsuspicious message, but the potential for abuse is immense.

@slothrop @avuko I think the 80s experimented with music as a product, but it wasn't really streamlines yet, so a lot of good stuff made it through. 90s changed that, until by the end of it, you have that slick packaging with little inside.

My nephew for example listens to everything, though he starts in the 80s mostly. He just picks what he likes, and so do his friends. I feel like a lot of the genre divisions we maybe cared about in the 80s/90s have become meaningless.
