“When I see people say Eurostar is shrinking it drives me crazy, because it’s really not true,” says CEO Cazenave to the FT

Yeah, because you merged with Thalys - so, surprise surprise, you transported more people

Passenger numbers London - Paris/Bruxelles are still down on the last pre-pandemic year, not least because Eurostar now no longer serves Ebbsfleet and Ashford

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@jon going from 3 UK stations to 1 certainly sounds like a shrink to me...

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@jon I'm sure I've seen this written up somewhere (probably by you), but are there any options for journeys to terminate and/or start at Ebbsfleet or Ashford? My gut says no with the layout of Ebbsfleet (mostly in a cutting), but Ashford is a bit more open

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@jon yeah, I know they don't currently stop there, both stations are nearby. I was wondering about future options, but it looks like they're limited https://jonworth.eu/the-future-of-long-distance-train-services-through-the-channel-tunnel/

The disk holding /home on my main workstation started to die, so I ordered a new 4T 2.5" SSD to replace the old 4T 3.5" spinning rust.

Last night I added the SSD and hit issues of it just failing and disconnecting randomly - urgh.

Turned out the power & sata cables were dusty, so cleaned and reconnected and all's well.

So, about 10pm I started an rsync. from the old to new and 12 hours later and it's still running.

At least the ssd's not had an error since

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@peter I need to get rid of some of my old hdds before they fail, what's the expected lifespan of your new SSD?

Nice feature of still having mobile signal, is I can look out the porthole and see a ship. Think "that's a big ship, I wonder what it is". Look it up on the vessel tracker. Get it's name, look that up on Wikipedia, and see it's joint 4th largest container ship on earth. All while sat wrapped in a duvet eating cake.

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@quixoticgeek I have this open in a tab on my phone pretty much always, maybe not quite as much info as Wikipedia, but it can tell me what that huge boat 10-15km offshore is https://www.vesselfinder.com/

Had a power cur about 1.5 hours ago and it's taken me until now to get the nas back up 😢

ZFS had a real issue this time causing truenas to have issues restarting.

Turned out the main pool wouldn't come back online until I manually cleared errors then it reappeared.

I'm now having to do a scrub on a 24 disk array to see if that will fix the remaining issues

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@peter sounds like a mare, good luck sorting that, is there a ups in your future?

I'm no economist, but I get the feeling that UK housing costs are significantly higher than elsewhere in Europe, am I right? Where are the stats?

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@brodriguesco nice stats ta, but I guess it proves my (implied) point that high house prices aren't great for an economy

This post has been bugging me for a while. Not for the text about Mastodon, but the screen cap of the wires article.

"Enough to build a town square on".

I read this. Over and over. And I wonder if anyone in tech, anyone who talks about an online town square. Have ever actually visited a town square. Sure we may have the picture in our head of the piazza of some Italian town, with terracotta roofs, and cafes in the lower story of every building. 1/n

@quixoticgeek exactly this, the most important space in the square is the communal space, not commercial opportunity to exploit that

It seems every company I've worked at has a person who looms large in their legend.
Like, they're often the person who built the core systems, everything was originally their design, but they left recently and in their absence they've had to hire like 5 more people to try and take over all their responsibilities.

I think next time I'm gonna track down that person, find out where they moved to, and go work there instead

jimh,
@jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone I've seen this quite a few times, most often it's the difference between being a small company where the devs can play fast and loose, versus a bigger company having to worry about having downtime from any half-arsed production changes. The "golden boy" gets out before he's found out

@justinling I'm well out of my depth, but I wonder if Israel's govt is starting to put the concept of Israel at threat (an ancestral homeland for Jewish people). If the Palestinian people can't have the same, where are we?

    @HelenG and given the state retirement age in the UK is no longer 65, it's only the lucky few who are retired by then anyway

    As much as I despise cigarettes, the British proposal to increase the legal age for smoking year by year in an attempt to eventually ban them is inane. It will simply create a black market and cause far more damage in the end. This kind of prohibition never works and is beneath stupidity.

    jimh,
    @jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

    @cstross @lauren have to admit I find walking into a cloud of sickly-sweet fruit-flavoured steam more offensive than the occasional whiff of burnt tobacco

    jimh,
    @jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Selena @lauren if you're going to have age restrictions for tobacco sales, I'd say there is also a strong argument for making an upper age limit (40? 50? 60?) as the older population will cost more in healthcare. Will that fly with the Tories voting base?!

    peter, to threads
    @peter@area51.social avatar

    I've kept quiet about #threads because I don't care about their offering - still debating on if I will block them when or if they federate.

    Anyhow I was reading a BBC article about them and they do seem to be missing core functionality at launch:

    • No Edit
    • No DM's
    • No Hashtags
    • No Search functionality
    • No home feed - this the article mentions they are looking into
    • No language translation
    • No desktop UI

    It makes you think they launched too early

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-66155433

    jimh,
    @jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

    @peter I'm thinking it was an opportunistic launch, they had a minimum viable product, so they went live when Twitter was getting flak for its latest bin fire.

    jimh,
    @jimh@fosstodon.org avatar

    @retrosteveuk @peter I can see them federating for a short time to get a few more users and a little goodwill. If only because they did similar with an early XMPP based version of Messenger
