Have you been seeing news from websites of the D.C. Weekly, the New York News Daily, the Chicago Chronicle or the Miami Chronicle? They’re all Russian disinformation campaigns and a likely prelude to the kind of interference we’ll see in this year’s US election cycle. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/07/business/media/russia-us-news-sites.html

whimper

There is nothing like the joy of the oncoming storm.

Hot, humid still day, and then this bears down.

jlundell,
@jlundell@ioc.exchange avatar

@NanoRaptor @grantimatter It is a hot day in June when the sun hangs still in the sky and there is not a whiff of wind in the air, nor a trace of clouds; the front and back yards are hot like an oven and not a single bird dares to fly about. Perspiration flows down my whole body in little rivulets. There is the noonday meal before me, but I cannot take it for the sheer heat. I ask for a mat to spread on the ground and lie down, but the mat is wet with moisture and flies swarm about to rest on my nose and refuse to be driven away.

Just at this moment when I am completely helpless, suddenly there is a rumbling of thunder and big sheets of black clouds overcast the sky and come majestically on like a great army advancing to battle. Rain-water begins to pour down from the eaves like a waterfall. The perspiration stops. The clamminess of the ground is gone. All flies disappear to hide themselves and I can eat my rice.

Ah, is this not happiness?

Not only was it not a terrorist attack, the model of Bentley that ran into a barrier and exploded at the Rainbow Bridge crossing, killing the occupants, was subject to a recall in 2021 due to a "stuck accelerator" problem. Incoming negligence lawsuit (against Bentley) ahoy ...

jlundell,
@jlundell@ioc.exchange avatar

@vfrmedia @gsuberland @aburka @cstross There was a plausible suggestion during the Audi “unintended acceleration” episode that at least some drivers, in a panic, hit the accelerator instead of the brake. (The pedals in the Audi were close together.) Try the experiment in your own car: fully press both the accelerator and the brake at the same time, and see who wins (spoiler: it won’t be the accelerator).

Random note.

I've been all digital for over a decade now. I very much admire the work of my chemical photography friends (shoutout to @skinnylatte ), but modern digital tech and its workflow does a better job for me for what I want to do.

But there's a lot about digital that makes me nervous, particular with regard to preservation. In particular, there's still no good quality non-proprietary general raw conversion and post-processing platform.

Heh. Getting a surprising, or I suppose unsurprising, number of people telling me how it's PERFECTLY SENSIBLE that they're preventing pedestrians from looking at the street in Las Vegas and that the SpaceX rocket that exploded was a BIG SUCCESS.

jlundell,
@jlundell@ioc.exchange avatar

@mattblaze It pains me more than a little to defend any Musk-related enterprise, but SpaceX’s approach of iterating quickly and learning from their mistakes does seem effective. Labeling this launch a success is more than just PR.

One of the funniest things in electronics is this self-referential approach to modeling.

First, you're taught that components behave in an idealized way. For example, a capacitor is just a capacitor. But then, there's an asterisk. The device also has some resistance (ESR) that limits peak current. So let's model a real-world capacitor as an idealized capacitor in series with an idealized resistor. Such an elegant and intuitive approach.

But look, there's a second asterisk! The capacitor also has some inductance that's becoming a pretty big deal at higher frequencies. Let's add an idealized inductor to account for that. Wait, a third asterisk?! Oh yeah, leakage current. Another resistor in parallel should do the trick.

Anyway, one thing leads to another and before you know it, you're working with this intuitive electrical model of a single MOSFET transistor.

PS. This is real and I'm not pulling your leg.

jlundell,
@jlundell@ioc.exchange avatar

@mimir @lcamtuf Best of both worlds: buy the non-ideal cap and part it out.

@ber @cbontenbal @dingodog19 @philosophy That there is a fundamental mystery that is beyond our grasp, most likely (though it’s not clear what “likely” means here) in principle. We can call it God (or Brian) but not characterize it.

    Hey, my first Mastodon general-help outreach. Let's see how it goes.

    1. Install a bunch of fonts from the Adobe Web site (paying customer)
    2. In the Creative Commons app, click all the install buttons.
    3. Creative Commons says "installed for local use"
    4. Neither Font Book nor any other apps can see the fonts.

    Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks in advance.

    A word about Apple naming. I can watch Apple TV+ on Apple TV using Apple Airpods Pro or maybe Apple Airpods Max, I can't remember - what is wrong with these people? The coupling of disdain for consumers wanting to identify their products with pretension that all that matters is the word Apple and that no one should care anyway: shame.

    And Apple is far from the only offender.

    I miss real product names - even product numbers. All hail the 2741.

    After reading @pluralistic's latest piece on planned obsolescence as technofeudalism, I stumbled across this Tumblr post about how a rusty old 100-year-old Singer sewing machine can be restored to FEARSOME, SUPERIOR working order compared to any newish machine, by swapping in standard-sized parts that attach with standard flat-head screws

    Meanwhile the modern machine's plastic parts wear out quickly and very little is attached with standard screws. It also depends on software that's now glitching
