Business meetings exist to share information and coordinate activity: this shit enables you to be apparently present in all but actually not engaged with any. If your calendar is triple-booked then your organization is under-resourced and needs more people, not more AI. Or it's holding unnecessary meetings to make management feel better about being surrounded by minions, in which case it needs to fire the executives responsible.

@cstross Back in 1993, I talked to a team at SGI who were building one of the first multi-person video chat apps. Since they were building it, they used it constantly. And the FIRST TWO THINGS THEY DID were: 1) a plugin that played a 5 second loop of you looking like you were still there; and 2) a plugin that would detect lulls in conversation and say "Mmm hmmm" in your voice.

Okay, so, Midge Ure.

The guy from Ultravox who also co-wrote “Do They Know it’s Christmas?”

Yeah.

Last night I learned he was also in Visage and THIN LIZZY.

I also learned that his name is a phonetically reversed pronunciation of his given name, “Jim.”

So, I’m gonna kinda take it easy today, because that’s a lot for a person to process and integrate.

In the early years of the decade, Visage made the most 80s video, and it’s for a song that still rules.

Also?

Produced by Midge Ure and fucking Conny Plank!

Prior to the 2024 Euros, Belgium announced new kits for their national teams and the away kit (light blue top, brown shorts) is an homage to Tintin and his creator, Belgian cartoonist Hergé. So cool. https://kottke.org/24/06/tintin-inspired-kits-for-the-belgian-national-football-team

An adorable dog moment:
I walk into my building. A family of three is waiting for the elevator, accompanied by a small dog. My apartment is on the second floor, so I start up the stairs. The dog follows me. The family calls to the dog, but it pays no heed. I turn around and point down the stairs. The dog looks to where I'm pointing and is overjoyed beyond measure to see its entire family down there!

Visiting the museum of natural history makes me wish public parks had T-rex or Allosaurus, or some other similar dinosaur skeletons on permanent display so kids and just people in general can study them casually and frequently. I know it would be a maintenance nightmare, but it would be so cool.

The normal flow of game development is to keep the game in a very malleable state, while you figure out what you're making. This is known as the "fun and good" phase of game development. Then as you approach shipping, the code base gets more fixed and brittle and hard to work with as you make optimizations, make things scale as needed, make everything work with multiplayer, &c.

mogwai_poet,
@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social avatar

In a live service/early access game, you do all those optimizations that make the code base fixed and brittle and hard to work with in order to ship it, then you keep working on it in that state forever. It's like if the sculptor had to patch their existing marble statue to add new features every three months. This is known as the "unremitting hellscape" phase of game development, and early access developers live there permanently.

The verdict may not matter to Trump's base, but I do think there is a group of people it matters to who are being overlooked: the people who were already likely to vote for Biden.

A Trump acquittal would have sapped trust in legal systems and government further. It would fueled apathy. Hopelessness and apathy can reelect Trump.

I have made upwards of 160 pies in my life, but the criterion that a particular custard pie filling is done when it DOES “wobble” but does NOT “move in waves” still gives me absolute hives. Standing there letting all the heat out nudging the pie pan over and over playing ‘wobble or wave’ until my bangs stick straight up from the hot air. 🥵
