The :sncb: S63 trains that do not continue to Maubeuge but have a 50 minute turnaround in Erquelinnes are operated by diesel trains. They also keep their engines running at all times 😵‍💫

Sweden is having a very typical Swedish argument about their railways - how European do they want to be?

Should the carriages they want to order for trains to northern Sweden and Norway be built to the larger Swedish, or the smaller European loading gauge? https://jarnvagar.nu/politiker-vill-ha-bredare-sovvagnar/

@jon Very accurate on the Swedishness of this debate 😅

What’s strange to me is that we’re seeing our own SJ struggling so hard with the night train of the/our future, the new Euronight, and yet when we seemingly have a chance to take matters into our own hands we’re about to miss it for some almost philosophical reason. Can’t see why we wouldn’t just have ”long enough beds, please” as a requirement rather than ”carriages need to be this exact width”.

@jon No prizes for guessing which neighbouring rail operator finds a way to make the SNCF approach just that little bit worse. By displaying the departure date and time in black text on the dark purple background of its corporate colours. Of course the corporate logo on the same purple background is in highly visible white text.

I’ve been working on this on and off for months now, but I think my research listing the world's is for the moment complete

467 towers in my list (of which status unknown 31, and destroyed or never built 42)

Of the rest, 268 are to be found in Google Street View, 126 are not

And of the towers still likely standing today, 358 are replicas, 25 resemblances, 11 derivatives

A bit of personal nostalgia: 20 years ago today, I bought a ticket for the following morning's train from Belgrade to Kolašin - my first trip on the Belgrade to Bar railway.

At that time "Serbia and Montenegro" was still notionally a single country, but already felt like two separate states. The name "Yugoslavia" had been dropped by then, but survived for a little longer in tickets like these, issued in the name of "Jugoslovenské železnice" (Yugoslav Railways).

Apparently GoVolta/FlyWise is having a fight with Train Charter Services, delaying the start of GoVolta budget trains from the Netherlands. And Paris deemed very difficult, so Germany is their first focus now.

Himmel, ist das wieder ein Himmelfahrtskommando, um heimzukommen. Alles nur wegen eines verspäteten TER von Cercy nach Dijon, der den letzten TGV nach Zürich verpasst hat. 🙄 Aber immerhin waren noch 4 andere betroffen. Mit etwas SNCF-Bahnhofspersonal Zuquatschen wird uns jetzt gnädigerweise, obwohl nicht bei allen ein durchgehendes Ticket vorhanden (hatte schon das AJC-Reglement vorbereitet) ein Taxi von Mulhouse nach Basel organisiert. Sollen uns in Mulhouse beim Infostand melden.

Disclaimer: Ich erwarte von Bahnhofspersonal in Dijon keine detaillierten Fahrplankenntnisse zum -Verkehr Frankreich <> Schweiz, aber die Vehemenz wie ich hier alle Hebel selber in Bewegung setzen musste, um etwas zu erreichen, finde ich schon unterirdisch. Und ich bin nun selber nicht der durchsetzungsfähigste Typ, erst recht nicht in Fremdsprachen.

End of an era 🕰️

After 15 years, yesterday was my last at as an ESA staff member*, & as is my longstanding habit, it ended with me cycling home late at night 🌖🚴‍♂️

Well, I am an astronomer, after all 🔭🤷‍♂️🙂

It has been a privilege, & there is much & there are many I will miss 🙇‍♂️

But I’m not retiring: next, a move to Germany 🇳🇱➡️🇩🇪, science with , talks & tours, writing a book, & many Space Rocks events & projects in development 🖖🤘

Arrived in 🇭🇺 Záhony. Last stop in Schengen area, now 1.5 h for locomotive change and passport control.

This is one of the relations where it's seriously faster to walk across the border to 🇺🇦 Čop than waiting for the train to head on. Still remaining in the train because it's always fun to have the system change and coupling at borders 🥰.

Received some questions about my travel reimbursement for a meeting in Brussels a few weeks ago. Train ticket and hotel were accepted, but the €40 for the return trip? When I explained I cycled back to the Netherlands, everything was clear. 😁

It was a good bike day.
