Hydrogen is a dud.

Which is just as well, because hydrogen mostly comes from fossil fuels today.

I can maybe see a case for hydrogen for fleet vehicles, if the operators actually have hydrolysis plants powered by renewables, because it allows for lighter and cheaper vehicles compared to BEVs, but retail hydrogen is not viable.

It might also be good for things like big corporate/industrial backup generators that currently run on diesel.

Although, in a situation where you need a backup generator, the relatively difficulty of igniting diesel might be an advantage over hydrogen.

I was reminded this morning that I am now 10 years older than Jim Anderson (the father of IDS) was when I first met him.

And I'm older than Bob Abbott and Willis Ware were when I met them.

I am unavoidably now part of the "Cybersecurity Old Folks."

For most of my professional life I’ve been perplexed by the whole venture capital scene in Tech. I’ve never really understood it… so like banks/hedge fund guys give you money and you get all excited cause you can build your thing but… now you’re on a major hook. They’re looking over your shoulder constantly expecting results and influencing your direction. If you don’t deliver then… you lose your house? You go into bankruptcy? Seems SUPER stressful. I just don’t get it.

jonhendry,
@jonhendry@iosdev.space avatar

@gedeonm

I think that's more what happens if you finance a company with regular bank loans.

With venture funding I think if you're not doing well enough they use their equity to take over the company and either make it work or sell the assets and IP.

I wonder: if you showed IBM executives what happens with the PC, would they still greenlight it?

Because they lost control of it pretty quick (the IBM PS/2 was a failed attempt to get control back, and that was only 6 years on) and then from then on they were only one fish in an increasingly bigger pond. And then PC-likes took over the workstation/server markets too, so their minicomputers and mainframes lost a lot too

    Why does Apple Music continue to suck at suggesting music I might actually want to listen to? Maybe I have enabled some setting to make it obtuse, but it has to know by now what I listen to and what I never even bother with, and yet every time I launch the app it's just tons of whatever is most popular right now. Am I alone in this experience?

    18+ a riddle: why do people who hate reading books thrive on impenetrably long essays?

    One of the first things about the LW crowd is how they just absolutely drown you in prose, from EY to SSC on down. There are several tactical advantages to this style for a group that is concerned foremost with winning debates, so it makes sense. I and many others find their refusal to edit off-putting and so don’t engage, but...
