Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@clayrivers @StillIRise1963 I remember talking about that with people some time ago.

Everyone was REALLY upset with me for asking "How long can you survive if your income stops right now?"

They hadn't thought of their income as an optional part of life, since they'd always had a job.

But they'd all be bankrupt within a month or two.

They didn't feel like they were that close to the edge and didn't like being told they were.

It really is another aspect of systemic #ableism the way that media and caretakers have elevated the genuine challenges abled caretakers have into now being something that gets more attention than the needs of disabled people.

It really is remarkable how abled people can always make disability, inaccessibility, even systemic ableism all about themselves.

(venting in rxn to the umpteenth media Q about how ppl can support caretakers that skipped entirely over how ppl can support disabled ppl)

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh @meganL The idea of a disabled person with agency and abilities seems really hard to grasp.

The cases where someone truly cannot do anything at all are quite rare.

Really wish people understood that losing one or more abilities doesn't mean all of them.

I saw a meme a moment ago, discussing various ways you can keep your neighbors at bay. In this case, it was appearing just slightly unhinged so they won't want to engage. :blobcatgiggle:

I laughed, it's funny, but while I was boosting and favoring it made me think about my new home. I moved in a small bit ago and I have still yet to meet all but one retiree.

No one says hello, no one stopped to welcome me or ask questions. A few have waved as they drive by and park in their garages. But they shut the doors as their cars are shutting down. I was three states away from this place a year ago and the neighborhood was much the same.

I remember when neighbors were bothersome. When you would come home and find someone sitting outside or walking their dog and they would want to strike up a conversation.

I'm curious how things will look in coming years. Will we form tighter groups with our neighborhoods, or will we further splinter, I wonder...

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@mentallyalex There is no sense that a long-term relationship with people who happen to live in the same place is either possible or particularly useful.

Because everyone leaves.

It's only when people can truly just stay for the rest of their lives that they start to care about who they're staying with.

@OrionKidder @msquebanh @CStamp I've seen this in a number of countries in Europe.

Basically, "chinese food" is whatever chinese restaurant owners manage to sell to the locals.

The idea of it being chinese is apparently worth a lot more than any authenticity.

It also matters a lot exactly which chinese people were first to appear in significant numbers, which varies per country.

It's a fascinating part of cultural history.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@PratarPersilja @msquebanh @CStamp @OrionKidder It really changed things that there's so much movement between China and the Netherlands since trade opened up in the 90s.

Rotterdam has a huge chinese supermarket (wish I lived near it!) and there's another chain of stores which delivers ingredients like red tofu and dark soy sauce, as well as fresh chinese vegetables.

There are simply enough chinese people that it's profitable to target them.

I just take collateral blessings from that.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh @CStamp @Gurre @OrionKidder It's definitely a thing.

Like the people running the chinese restaurant near where I grew up were "from Sichuan", except they hadn't lived there in more than 4 generations.

But when the big earthquake hit in 2008, they were sending help to their family.

The sense of "one of us" getting hurt or being in need was very personal to them.

@msquebanh A lot of European countries' leadership feel guilt about how Jews were treated after WW2.

A lot of survivors got sent back to their home country, only to find there was nothing for them, there.

All they used to have was either gone from this world, or in someone else's hands.

It usually goes wholly unmentioned, but it was a major driver for supporting the creation of Israel, and later support for Israel's continued existence.

indie gamedev is spending 3-5 years working on a game with probably at least a couple other people and then you release it and if youre fairly lucky you gross like 20-80 thousand US dollars which works out to $5000 a person a year before tax. it's a very cool and sustainable industry

How I learned to stand up for myself:

No one stood up for me, when necessary & I got sick & tired of waiting for others to step up, on my behalf. I learned to stop waiting for others. I learned - I can & am, my best personal, most reliable cheerleader! I learned that being my own best supporter, was empowerment, in full living & self loving actions!

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh A large advantage, I've learned, is that when I need someone, I'm always there myself.

Maybe that one person isn't enough every time, but very often, all it takes is one person speaking up for me.

If anything, I'd tell a younger self that it's perfectly fine to be very difficult.
