The new Mars Rover looks brilliant, love that they included Ingenuity, but sad there's no pet rock. https://www.theverge.com/23733997/lego-mars-rover-perseverance-price-release-date

@andypiper Pet rock sold separately.

Meta bought Giphy for $400M in 2020 and is selling it for $53M? With a price drop that steep, you’d think they sold NFTs not GIFs.

@gerbrand @carnage4life Came here to say this.

I'm also puzzled how Giphy is supposed to make money. I love it, it's super fun to sprinkle GIFs into chat, but where is the money supposed to come from?

A friend is trying to decide whether to join a startup that plans to train LLMs on the writing of particular individuals so people can chat with their loved ones after they're gone. I said, "That's pretty fucking macabre." My friend said, "That's what I thought, but the founder asked me why it was different from re-watching old family movies and I don't have an answer." My friend has lost people to AIDS, cancer, and dementia and still misses them; I honestly don't know what to think…

jzb,
@jzb@mastodon.social avatar

@gvwilson I’ve also lost people to cancer and dementia. I don’t think I would want to interact with an LLM pretending to be them. I think there is a lot of difference between watching, or reading, content that someone participated in versus trying to generate new content that they didn’t participate in.

Now, if a person knows they have a terminal disease and wants to train an LLM for their family and friends… 🤷‍♂️ I don’t think that I would make use of such a thing, but some might.

I've had Superman by Crash Test Dummies stuck playing non-stop in my head this morning, which is really unfortunate. I can't remember the last time I heard that song.

@vwbusguy Sometimes I despair the world will never see another man like him…

I was playing this just a few days ago. Such a perfect tune. Just brilliant songwriting, and performance. It does stick with you.

@vwbusguy wait. Almost? That’s a solid pop song right there. Melancholy, but it’s an amazing melody IMO.

This has been on my mind for a while, but I finally sat down and did a quick post about it.

People complain a lot about content, but 1) don't really know or care about why things are the way they are, 2) aren't willing to pay for the content they say they want to exist, and 3) evidence shows that when it does they don't actually find + consume what they claim to want.

"We're going to label hate groups so you can filter them from our social network feed if you want."

If you can identify hate groups, ban them. Just freaking ban them.

Are people really so desperate for engagement and revenue that they can't even draw the line at hate groups? That's so depressing.

🆕 blog! “Silence Isn't Consent”

I was in one of those interminably dull video-conferences a few weeks ago. The presenter was pitching their grand vision of what our next steps should be. "So!" They said, "Any comments before we launch?" No one said anything. After half a minute the presenter said "As there are no objections, we'll proceed. Silence is […]

@Edent You kind of switch gears in this post from affirmative consent in meetings (which is one topic - and I'd argue is unwieldy and not practical), and consent to scrape sites.

The scraping issue is very thorny. Most people seem to think Internet Archive is a Good Thing(TM) - and they also practice saving sites without consent. But if it's done for other reasons it's a Bad Thing(TM).

Maybe you think it's bad in both cases - but I've found generally people are inconsistent on this.

@hacks4pancakes Physical media FTW. That's a nice collection. As a GenXer I've got a CD collection I've been working on since about 1987 and plan to keep that around for life.
