New video for the Nebulized: if there’s any region in the U.S. doing livable streets advocacy better than the Twin Cities, I don’t know what it is. Also: urban freeways are stupid.

@nerd4cities Nebula is great, but my subscription is coming to an end soon and I would love to see you start posting to PeerTube. Even if it’s a delayed option, I am generally happy to wait.

Please consider making https://urbanists.video your home for videos on the Fediverse. My dollar or two a month via Patreon is just a drop in the bucket, but I’m confident I’m not the only person who prioritize support for those who repost to PeerTube

@bikepedantic my wife really likes our Ioniq 5, but like most other Usonian SUVs and crossovers it is actually surprisingly tall. I would love to have an EV more like the Opel Insignia/Buick Regal wagon.

I'm reading Less Is More by Jason Nickel and I'm finding it an essential and excellent book. It has the most poignant critique of GDP and growthism I have ever seen.

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@stfn thanks for the recommendation. I’m not there yet, but I’m intrigued by the concept of degrowth.

kaleb, to books
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

Parents of teens, I need a book recommendation!

This is to appease some well-meaning but overtly Christian and out-of-touch family members. Something for a 12yo who reads well above his age, along the lines of inspiration/motivation for teens to be good humans and members of society

Rather than have them pushing propaganda on my son I’d like to find a worthwhile read they will feel addresses the insufficient Christian influence in his life

I am not Christian, but I don’t mind giving him “Christian” books as long as the message doesn’t focus on human guilt/sin, the worthlessness of humanity without a saviour, or racial/gender/orientation/etc. intolerance.

It’s just that everything they are trying to free him focuses on the “traditional Christian” concept of what it means to grow into being a man. It’s all rubbish I can’t tolerate.

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@philip_cardella I think the expectation is non-fiction, but I like the suggestion of biographies over self-help. I like the Carter suggestion.

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@tshirtman I was raised Christian and fully knowing the Bible is the reason I no longer identify as such. That said, my concern is not with the concept of religion but with the James Dobson/Focus on the Family types of teachings.

I already fight the BS from family about how “boys don’t have long hair” because my son’s hair doesn’t fit their constrict of a godly boy. I don’t need the teachings about what makes a “godly man”.

Dear @potus, I am excited to see you joining the fediverse, but I question your decision to join Threads.

Please consider committing to by creating @potus this will allow you to reach all users as well as the millions on and more with just one account and without favoring a commercial endeavour that still has the power to censor you.

To all who follow @potus, wouldn’t it be great to have the confidence of official communications coming from a .gov domain!

@steinbring both of my wonderful pups are from the south: Tennessee and Alabama respectively.

Both were grossly mistreated, with one being denied veterinary care after having one of his hind legs crushed. It healed some, but it points the wrong direction now. 🥺

Threads to Mastodon observation. On Threads, you can post 10 images per post, but due to only being able to post four here only the first four are shown on Mastodon.

I just boosted a Threads post with photos from my Threads account if you want to see it.

I didn't alt tag them on Threads, so I'm sure I'm going to get yelled at here, but it is what it is. While I'm told I do a good job with my alt tags, I find them mentally draining to write.

Anyway, the Threads connection is working.

@bryanhansel of you’re on iOS I highly recommend the IceCubes app. It includes a tool to auto generate ALT text like this one:

just took an hour of leave so I could shower, that’s that magical working single parent life

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@bikepedantic is the use of an hour a company requirement?

I assume you’re salaried, and I gather you’re in the US. This means that your employer can only force you to use time in full-day and half-day increments. If you work more than half a day you are entitled to a full-day’s pay with no use of paid leave required.

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@LhasaCM @bikepedantic This is a federal law (Federal Labour Standards Act - FLSA), but strangely the Federal government has exempted itself from many of these rules. I’ve never worked on Federal payroll, so I must admit I don’t know.

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@LhasaCM @bikepedantic it ultimately comes down to whether an FLSA-exempt employee meets the standards for exemption. If an employer deducts pay in less than full-day or half-day increments the employee may no longer meet the standards for exemption making the employer liable for overtime and other FLSA requirements.

@steinbring while this is a good thing, I would also like to see NHTSA/USDOT regulations begin requiring manufacturers to implement a standardized interface for interlock devices. Many interlock device installations result in significant damage to the vehicle’s electrical system, similar to the pains of older aftermarket security systems. It also means that interlock devices are relatively simple to defeat.

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@steinbring to be fair, it’s been more than a decade since I worked for WisDOT and I haven’t paid much attention to is space in that time.

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@steinbring I believe you’re a motorcyclist, what are your thoughts on interlocks for motorcycles? IIRC Wisconsin does not currently require interlocks on these.

Also, do you know if this bill addresses that gap?

kaleb,
@kaleb@social.coop avatar

@steinbring I think you’re spot on. In fact it is super common for folks to transfer title out of their name (title in spouse’s name only for example) to avoid the requirement to install an interlock. The law will never be able to close all the gaps, but making compliance easier will increase compliance.

(How many drivers would choose transit to get home rather than risk driving drunk if transit were a viable option?)
