REMINDER!

we are co-sponsoring a talk titled “Exploring the Other Spectrum:
Useful Radio” from Rick Prelinger @footage this evening!

on the CU Boulder campus - Bruce Curtis Museum Collections Building, Room W100, 5 PM

kaleb_haugen,

@mediaarchaeologylab with I could attend, but thank you for sponsoring this talk. Few people realize how much radio impacts their lives.

(As a pilot and amateur radio operator, I am posting this over WiFi drinking a coffee purchased with an NFC card and listening to music through Bluetooth headphones – I am a heavy radio user.)

My latest video is now up on Nebula!

https://nebula.tv/videos/notjustbikes-the-german-city-with-more-bikes-than-cars/

Freiburg im Breisgau is a great city. It has a pedestrianized city centre, lots of trams, and more bikes than cars! It's the model that all European cities should be following.

kaleb_haugen,

@notjustbikes it’s always inspiring to see how car-oriented cities can and have changed their ways in a generation or less. I still have hope for North America. Thank you for sharing.

@RM_Transit while I would love to see micro-reactors used in this way I doubt many nations would allow such ships into their ports. I don’t believe safety-focused NIMBY-ism has any justification here, but I doubt the international market would tolerate private nuclear ships for political reasons.

@RM_Transit while I understand the disadvantages of bi-levels (I currently live in the land of Metra “gallery cars”) I don’t understand the need to replace the carts simply to repower them.

Wouldn’t it be more sensible to simply replace the existing bogies/trucks with new traction motors on the existing cars, and replace the locomotive with a cab car? The oldest cars could then be phased out over time being replaced with single level trains.

    kaleb_haugen,

@kaleb_haugen @RM_Transit it seems like their would be a strong compromise to get the full life out of newer bi-levels and cab cars with some of the advantages of EMU’s

@RM_Transit so this took me down the rabbit hole of and transit layers. Now I’m trying to understand the routes vs stops, and when bus routes show up like in the MKE screenshot below.

    https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Buses

Screenshot of Apple Maps transit layer in Milwaukee showing one bus route, one streetcar route, and some Amtrak routes. But most bus service is not shown.

@RM_Transit great peace, Reese. One point I didn’t hear* you make is that early retirement for the current generation leads to poor decisions for the future generation. If the current generation was deemed to have lasted only 20 years, manageability and longevity standards for the future generation will be affected, becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

FML, It looks like the Airline Pilots Union is going to force the FFA to close the charter loophole because it's taking business away from major airlines. The loophole allows carriers running planes with 30 seats or less to operate like private jets and not force passengers to go through security. It was the last remaining not completely garbage experience of commercial air travel.
    https://simpleflying.com/faa-close-regulatory-charter-loophole/

    kaleb_haugen, (edited )

@malwaretech @doggojones I’m happy to be shown wrong here, but I do not believe that this decision will have any impact on legitimate charter flights. Rather it will have an impact on airlines chartering 30 passenger planes to fly scheduled routes.

Bona fide charters will still exist, and will still be available via FBO’s without going to the commercial terminal.

Had a lovely 72km ride today on the Military Ridge Trail. Rail trails are great, but I continue to hope for the return of passenger rail between Madison and Dubuque.

    kaleb_haugen,

@bryanhansel I enjoy the city, but the service I envision would be initially commuter-focused with expansion opportunities according to demand.

There are currently significant numbers of commuters from Dodgeville to Madison with southwestern expansion accelerating for those who don’t want to live in the urban area of Madison. I suspect there is likely smaller numbers between Dodgeville to Dubuque and Dubuque and Madison.

In my last video, I probably should have included an image of what "in conduit" means. So here's the outlet in my kitchen island, and what's inside the cabinet.

All electrical work around Chicago is done like this even in residential construction. Armored cabling is sometimes allowed and is much easier for a DIYer. I've worked with it before, though, and it still sucks compared to Romex!

A view from inside the cabinet where a metal pipe is coming up through the floor and bending to meet a metal electrical box. Wires run within the pipe to the box and then the receptacle

Would you like a short thread on a weird internal conflict I have regarding a fairly widespread issue Hyundai/Kia E-GMP cars are having?

That question was rhetorical. Strap in.

OK, so my car can (in theory) charge at 48 amps. With our Freedom voltage, that's 11.5 kW. A fair number of owners are having problems charging at this speed because the charge inlet overheats.

Now, initially, Hyundai had a very stupid strategy for this occurrence: stop charging entirely. That was awful.

    kaleb_haugen,

@TechConnectify I agree that the charging behaviour is not critical for most users. Even for me who often goes 3 days before charging – meaning I do need a longer charge – this is insignificant.

With that said, it is important to note that this behaviour is not limited to 11 kW charging, below are 2 charging curves on a 9.6 kW charger before and after Hyundai changed the behaviour. Even at 9.6 I am consistently throttled after about an hour.

After: A stepped 9.6 kW down to 4.3 kW

Today in Labor History September 24, 1918: The radical labor union Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was declared illegal in Canada

    kaleb_haugen, (edited )

@MikeDunnAuthor can you share a source for that. I’m mildly interested in history and am well aware of its existence and open operation in Canada long after 1918.

*minor edit for clarity and a couple tags, as I’m indeed interested in the answer

    kaleb_haugen,

@MikeDunnAuthor alright, the only thing I could find was a mention that the War Measures Act was used to outlaw “…many radical political and labour groups. The ban included the IWW…” due to their opposition to conscription.

I’d love to know more as continued to operate in Canada long after. And it appears that this ban crystallized support for syndicalism.
