most people don’t know this but there’s a type of antelope in Wyoming that can jump higher than a house! it sounds crazy, but it’s mostly because of it’s powerful hind quarters but also because houses don’t jump

Vector Similarity Search coming to DuckDB is super cool. Already starting to think what we could build over this @Coginiti. Data Threads

https://duckdb.org/2024/05/03/vector-similarity-search-vss.html

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@matthew_mullins_ @marcslove postgres has had it via a few extensions for a while. imo it’s a shame they’ve been called vector “databases”, because it obscures what they really are — indices. once you understand that, it opens up a ton of use cases

this morning i had to exfiltrate a small animal demon from my house

it was hot, so i opened all the doors, to let cool air in. my wife suggested turning the fans on

later, after shutting the doors, i was working on a parser bug, deep in concentration, when i thought i heard someone

i walked around, nobody on the first floor, but i heard an eerie noise on the second floor. at the top of the stairs, i discovered it! flailing in all directions

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

i found a sparrow! the poor thing couldn’t find its way outside

we did a dance together, following him into room after room, shutting doors as we left. eventually we faced off in the living room.

tbh i never saw him leave, but i haven’t heard him the rest of the day, so im going to assume we’re birdless now

"if everything is X, nothing is X" - in my brain, that is usually "if everything is critical, nothing is critical". Is there a good explainer/history for this phrase? Trying to explain it to some folks who are trying to evaluate open source packages and keep coming back to "we have identified a serious problem with open source packages!" "how many packages have it?" "about 99%" "then it isn't a serious problem, or at least you can't treat it as one".

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@luis_in_brief criticality is a way of prioritizing. The reason why we prioritize is because we CAN’T do everything. We need to identify some things as more important than others. If everything has the same priority, then you can’t identify which thing to do first, so you effectively have no priorities.

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@luis_in_brief okay, i thought i was giving you that, sorry

this is such a puzzling perspective

  1. will be useful
  2. i will judge you for trying to use them

i generally regard, “i will think less of you” type comments as a joke, because of how ridiculous the sentiment is, but this sort of stuff is perverse on the fedi

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

the full article is decent though.

“The long-term popularity of any given tool for software development is proportional to how much labour arbitrage it enables.”

i’d say that’s one of the core tenants of software development in general. “keep it simple”, “automate yourself out of a job”, etc., the list goes on

all software development practices, including tools, are oriented toward making it cheaper and easier to acquire and use engineering talent

My current radical take that is driving the principal insane is the idea that to better educate our students about social media, online safety etc. we should have them set up and run their own social media on the school intranet.

And I get why. But, why do we just throw young people out into the wilds of the internet where they are surrounded by ads, creepy people, criminals etc.?

Part of why social media can be chaotic and destructive is because too many adults hope it just wont exist.

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird oh that’s great. definitely ask questions here if you need to, there’s a ton of people who would love to help

Ofcourse results needs to be verified and confirmed in practice but after reading the
MedGemini paper from Google there is no doubt in my mind AI will change the world of medicines. Not replacing people but augmenting them during diagnosis, operations and treatment of patients.
https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.18416

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@ErikJonker yeah, medicine is one of those fields where the domain is so complex that a human brain can’t grok all the nuances. Although i get annoyed when they start talking automated decision making, imo medicine needs augmented decision making, not fully automated procedures

there’s some other similar fields where AI will help, like materials science, some complex manufacturing processes, ag tech, etc.

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@acdha @ErikJonker 💯 although i think both medicine and law are in a better position than most fields, not to say they don’t need more preparation
