Everyone should know that spell check is broken in software you spend hundreds on because Microsoft insists you use a cloud service to check your spelling. This has broken custom spell check technologies indigenous people have built for their language.

Everyone knows that GPT-4o is just OpenAI getting another step change amount of data right? It's hype after hype to scrape as much data as possible. That's the only way this plays out based on the underlying technologies. So don't use it unless you consent to streaming your audio and visual data straight to them to profit from.

Looking to get a personal account through a managed provider.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

How does it compare to ownCloud?

Any hosts I should look at or avoid?

Any apps I should get for it, or avoid?

Any issues I should be aware of before I switch?

@Yerbouti @ajsadauskas thanks for sharing. I've been using Synology's things because I have their NAS and it comes with it. But I haven't been too happy with their docs though their drive feature is great. Maybe next cloud might completely fill the void.

Smart home kiwis, any recommendations for smart locks? I want to move everything to Home Assistant but I'm currently half HA half Apple HomeKit. I can't seem to find any matter capable locks for NZ. The ones the door man recommends all require a WiFi bridge and also use a cloud for remote access (can't be done locally) but I guess that's okay for now.

Imagine if we used this technology for something like, idk, better early detection of cancer because I've come across many useless doctors who particularly fail to diagnose indigenous people sooner even though obvious signs were there. But nah, let's use AI for Genocide.

The people being manipulated by social media (eg anti-vaxers) are hard out trying to get people to submit responses to the Covid inquiry. The Democracy Now guy's old campaign signs have been reused for this. lol. He's got signed in 3 different places within 6km. And some other knob (same knob?) posted anti-vax signs next to these.

Anyway go do a submission otherwise these people will be the loudest.

Kia Ora Koutou, we've decided to preemptively block/defederate the Bluesky bridge (announcement: https://snarfed.org/2024-02-12_52106) due to ethical issues with opt out, and the precedent we had already set by blocking Threads and Twitter bridges such as bird.makeup etc..

@jonoabroad @keoni I think that's a fundamental problem with how people take from the web. The idea that once you put it live on the web anyone can just take it and do what they want with it. We've lost the idea of respecting one another because we don't have to confront them in real life. So we think it's okay and there are plenty of reasons why I should bridge these two things without people's consent. But when did not asking for consent do most people good?

@jonoabroad @keoni that's a good point the fediverse one. Which is why we should have the discussion. But when you think about the WHY some of us are here in the first place, and you valued that, then I feel like connecting to anything coming from the likes of Meta and Jack should be something where we might say, as an instance, we won't federate with that server (or what's the jargon is) but yea I can see how this all blows up quickly now.

Apparently, Ryan Barrett @snarfed.org@snarfed.org, an engineer/developer, is about to connect a bridge between Mastodon (Fediverse) and Bluesky.

Of note the bridge is OPT-OUT. That is, your content will be automatically bridged to Bluesky, UNLESS you OPT-OUT.

So how do you opt-out? You have to DM Ryan Barnett at @snarfed, email him (somehow), file a GitHub issue, or put in your profile bio.

Why would anyone in their right mind think it's okay to just push our data over to some other platform without our consent? Okay sure this is like the robots.txt. But even that should be opt in not opt out. No scraping unless robots.txt even exists.

Had my dinner while watching Jamie Oliver cook. He made gnocchi... it was so easy! So I had a second dinner. Made ʻulu gnocchi. Why have I never thought to make this? How is this not sold everywhere? Taste is great. Texture is great. ʻUlu grows abundantly on trees while the cost of food in Hawaiʻi is redic! I just swapped potatoes with ʻulu. Still has flour.
