Heeeeeeck yeah. The Raspberry Pi Pico-W transplant into the was a success. Loading web sites is pretty dang slow, but it tops out at like 60Kb/sec, not much faster than a 56K modem, not that those existed when this IIci was contemporary. I think the disk driver in the image I used is super slow. I remember seeing a warning in the log file. So going to fiddle with it in the near future, but for now just so glad this is working. Such a neat machine.

Edit: Oh and I forgot to tag @ActionRetro and @mac84tv for all their hard work with Frog Find and such oh and thanks to the project too!

Hey furries.club users (and others!):
What do you guys think about glitch-soc?

Personally, I'd dig having advanced post formatting using Markdown. I post enough links that I'd like to embed in text, or use bulleted lists or block quotes
https://glitch-soc.github.io/docs/features/rich-text/

There would also be advanced post privacy options, the option for color coded post privacy symbols, fullwidth images inline, and a bunch of other neat little additions.
You can dig into em more here:
https://glitch-soc.github.io/docs/

I'm not sure how much this will reach other furries.club users (I think most people who follow me are on other instance), I'm trying to gauge if this is just something I'm interested in or if it's a more generally desired featureset

kiteless,
@kiteless@furries.club avatar

@lupomancer Do you have links to instances that run glitch-soc so I can see it in action? Doesn't need to be a furry instance.

@tubetime @root42 Also I ended up buying the AST 486. It's missing it's CPU but seems otherwise complete.

Hey I'm gonna do a laptop thread while I deep clean this area of my room lol, the first one, Compaq lte elite 4/75cx, with a fancy active screen, 486, and barely working hinges.

@kiwa Ohhh I have one of these. Been struggling to find a good solid state alternative to the weird PCMCIA HDD it has in it before the HDD dies. Any suggestions? SO far regular PCMCIA to CF card adaptors don't seem to work. It's been a long while since I messed with it, but IIR it would boot off a 5MB or 10MB HP PCMCIA card with an HP brand on it, but nothing else.

Wow we just got a HUGE SPAM report this morning. Just spent the last 30 min doing moderation.

Looking through even my normal "HOME" Fedi-feed looks like it was very wide spread.

I think this is a good reminder to stay tenacious, because SPAM folks are never ending.

@gratux More to come I;m sure. Appreciate the help and always nice to meet another Ace! 🦊 :heart_ace:

@kiwa I've been worried about something like this happening for a while. I'm sure we will get this more and more. We must stay vigilant. Also all my posts are public and so far I've not been targeted.

Cool little transistor radio works again. It’s soooo cheap, but I just wanted a little radio to keep in my emergency bag. Will not leave batteries in it.

BTW do you year that weard encoding in the background of the music. It almost sound like JT65 or JT9 ham radio. I’ve noticed this on broadcast radio for a long time now. Any idea what this is? folks maybe know?

Edit: BTW I never record videos in portrait but this is an exception since it's vertical. :D

I haven't shown this properly, it's a hard disk I got, someone from the office found it in a storage closet and it ended up in my boss's hands, I was like I want that, and after explaining what it was, I got it, with the promise to wipe it.

So, a thread 🧵

kiteless,
@kiteless@furries.club avatar

@kiwa This was my very first hard drive, and later I got a ST-251-1 for a whopping 40MB. I have a couple RLL drives in my collection. I've not tried to spin them up yet. This was a good thread to read.

kiteless,
@kiteless@furries.club avatar

@kiwa Totally agree and they have some of THEEEE BEST spin up sounds of any hard drive. chefs kiss haha.

@dosnostalgic

Do you know of some kind of dos game database that has an extensive list of all earlier fully 3D dos games (like 486 era and earlier) ?

I have been trying to find a game off and on for years. It was fully 3D, and I think it was a FPS like a tank game, colorful and the title starting screen was some classical music of some kind. I think I only had a PC speaker back then. It’s NOT some common game and I’ve just not been able to find it. Hoping you might know or someone to watches you might remember. I feel like I would remember it if I saw/heard it. Cheers!

Wow Firewatch is $2 on Steam right now. Awesome story driven game with light puzzles. I played this and finished it back in 2016. Highly recommended if you are looking for something chill to play.

what is a modern way to rip audio cds on linux? like to what format? flac, wav?

**solved btw im gonna use abcde and flac, check the replies

kiteless,
@kiteless@furries.club avatar

@kiwa Unpopular opinion but I just do high bitrate MP3's. But my hearing is not the best and I realize that's not "Archival" but they don't take up too much space and I still use older MP3 players that typically don't support OGG, FLAC, AAC etc.

There is just one old, crappy, dark, interlaced upload of "The Mind's Eye" on YouTube. I happen to have a copy of it as well as "Beyond The Mind's Eye". Working with @EatYourSheep - Well really loaning the Laserdisc's to him, he was able to get these captured in a high quality way and uploaded. Take a relaxing trip back to 1990 when really any kind of "CEE GEE EYE" was just mind blowing.

Cute TV on marketplace, I love tiny color TV's

kiteless,
@kiteless@furries.club avatar

@kiwa Genius. I have a little 9" TV with a super sharp picture. I had never thought of using it like that. What do you use to feed it video? Computer to composite? DVD player? VCR?

kiteless,
@kiteless@furries.club avatar

@kiwa Oh nice does that have composite or do you use a converter?

All I understood so far of the OpenAI drama is that Silicon Valley must be a religious cult run by lunatics. It's probably not a wise idea to let these people define the future.

kiteless,
@kiteless@furries.club avatar

@floooh @Seg While I’m not a fan of open AI, making sweeping generalizations of all of Silicon Valley is very short sited IMO. The phone you are using is probably made by or at least running an OS from a company in Silicon Valley. The computer you are using has its roots from Silicon Valley. Lots of innovation and amazing technology starts there. That said companies like FaceBook/Meta & Twitter are also in S.V. And one could argue that they have done more harm than good.

Successfully saved this III from battery cancer. It had a couple rotting AAA batteries. Did a quick tear down, used who’ve vinegar on all the metals and plastics that had battery rot on them. Battery compartment needed a little CA glue, used glass cleaner on the screen, the. Gave all the plastics a once over with IPA and Q-Tips especially in all the title seams. Working great.

I took far too many pics at the Computer History Museum this weekend to fit in even just 3 posts, but here are some choice pics in said 3 posts. It’s funny, I’ve been to the CHM many times going to VCF West, but never actually went thought the museum proper. Even managed to do the IBM 1401 demo! I expected to enjoy myself but I had an absolute blast and geeked out so hard on the friends I was with. If you are able to get to Mountain View you should go! (1/3)
