Urban water conservation is important, but lots has been done and there's not much more juice in the squeeze. The low hanging fruit here is agricultural land retirement and changing to less water intensive crops. Ag is 80 percent of human water use in California.

Hi I'm helping Community Democracy Project throw a Covid-safe dance fundraiser for Gaza (1/27). We can get jiggy, safely! Masks required, air purifiers, UV-C, testing, the works!

Boosts hella appreciated.

My main problem with ‘digital nomads’ is how, in search of ‘cheaper solutions’ to their own life problems in their own societies, they pretty much make life harder for the people from the nomad hotspots. There’s no sugar-coating this. Someone in Lisbon or Bali doesn’t easily have ‘a cheaper place’ to move to. I don’t think there’s an ethical way to do this, and legally it’s also such a fraught lifestyle. You’re one major illness or one global pandemic away from having to leave ‘your home’.

kzodasnowman,
@kzodasnowman@spore.social avatar

@skinnylatte I have such a visceral aversion to those types. You described it so well with USD arbitrage!

The only place in the world where there’s an accurate description of my ‘palate’ was Indonesia.

People knew exactly what foods and flavor profiles I like when I say ‘gurih’.

I’ve never liked plain or light tasting food (unless exceptionally high quality: like steamed fish, Teochew style, but the fish has to be world class); so I found it wonderful that all of the food east of Jogja was basically ‘food I’m obsessed with’, especially East Java, and NTT cuisines.

kzodasnowman,
@kzodasnowman@spore.social avatar

@skinnylatte hell yeah. Taste is ultimately subjective, but people always looked at me wild when I said Mexican food is better than Japanese. Seeing you write 'Heavy' flavor feels accurate to describe how I feel.

Telling people the pandemic is over somehow results in an incredibly low uptake of updated boosters 🤔

kzodasnowman,
@kzodasnowman@spore.social avatar

@inquiline I haven't looked into why Peru and Argentina have 80%+ booster uptake, but it might be related! I'd bet their public health has different messaging. Saw it on @PeoplesCDC weekly forecast.

One of my dear friends is a state scientist for California. In California if you trust state park beaches to not poison your kids and your dogs, if you appreciate companies getting cited and brought into line for dumping toxic pollutants in your backyard, if you align with all the ambitions we have in this state to meet climate goals -- who do you think is doing that work? It's state scientists who have been massively underpaid for years

Engineers make about 30% more doing the same work.

kzodasnowman,
@kzodasnowman@spore.social avatar

@grimalkina that one was particularly rough. Toms is one of the brightest minds in California water and salmonids and is getting squeezed out. I pop in on the CA state workers Reddit every once in a while to see how the scientists are feeling. It's grim out there.

    I just read Tahir Hamut Izgil’s memoir ‘Waiting to be Arrested at Night’. He’s a Uyghur poet who got asylum and now lives in DC, but his memoir provides essential reading on what it’s like reading the tea leaves and trying to figure out when is the right time to leave your home forever. With many challenges along the way (it is very difficult for Uyghurs to get passports; the Chinese state also confiscates them)

    Western leftists who deny the Uyghur genocide should walk into the sea.

    @skinnylatte my header image "don't suck" is from a loose assemblage of plastic chairs by a food truck on the border of San Leandro and Oakland. It was a deserted industrial street and yet felt so right, was so delicious. Oakland has the juice.

    Mastodon seems like the place to ask. So I'm a little indie musician guy. I'm slowly replacing Twitter with here, I've been using Bandcamp but am unhappy with large corporations buying and selling it - so I got a Faircamp (no sales yet but I haven't been pushing it!). What are alternatives to other large sites. Is Peertube a good YouTube alternative? What about email? If there's one thing I've noticed about Mastodon -I know there's a whole world of ultra computer nerds on here, and I salute you.

    kzodasnowman,
    @kzodasnowman@spore.social avatar

    @limneticvillains There's https://mirlo.space/ and a bunch of others. Mirlo has an account on here somewhere; the fact that it is not auto-populating for me is another point showing Mastodon is still not 100% ease of use!

    I think we CAN win this. I think we CAN get people masking again, voluntarily. I don't think it will be easy, and I think we need to spend a lot of time and effort on hashing out a strategy, but I don't think it's impossible.

    It's fundamentally rational to wear a mask to prevent the spread of disease. We have facts on our side.

    SO many people only stopped masking in order to fit in, but they'd wear them again if we can find a way to give them social license and confidence.

    kzodasnowman,
    @kzodasnowman@spore.social avatar

    @libroraptor @inquiline @PacificNic heard that! People start paying attention real quick when I tell them COVID can cause erectile dysfunction, decrease sperm count and fertility, and potentially shrink penis size. I've heard multiple get vaccinated for that reason alone. Gotta tie it back to masks now too.
